Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
I put the trophy into the cardboard box.

People kept sneaking glances at me, only to look away just as quickly.

Andy came down the hall and stopped about ten feet away. He stood beside Jason, and the two of them watched me pack.

I carried the box to the desk by the entrance, right next to the restroom.

The workstation was cramped, and a layer of dust covered the desk. Two boxes of printer paper sat in the corner, giving off a musty smell. I set my box down.

At 2:00 pm, I was called into Administration.

The manager didn't even look up as she handed me a form. "Natalie, Mr. Hampton wants you to spend the afternoon organizing the storage room. Everyone has to take a turn doing this kind of work."

I took the form.

The storage room was two floors underground, packed with outdated files, old desks and chairs, and company T-shirts from who knew how many years ago.

I spent the entire afternoon moving things by myself.

The edges of the cardboard boxes left several cuts on my hands. When blood started beading along the cuts, I wrapped them with some tissues and kept working.

It was 7:00 pm by the time I got home.

I couldn't even be bothered to turn on the lights. I sat on the couch, opened my contacts, and found Mr. Larkin's number.

My finger hovered over the call button.

Then I remembered what Michael had said at last year's company celebration. He'd been holding a drink, practically glowing as he clapped me on the shoulder with a huge grin.

"Natalie, from now on, do whatever you want. There are no rules for you at this company. You make the rules."

I let out a wry laugh and turned off my phone.

On the third morning, I had barely sat down at my desk by the restroom when footsteps came down the hall.

Andy came toward me with a file in his hand, Jason at his side. They stopped at my desk, and Andy tossed the file down in front of me. A few pages slipped out and scattered across my keyboard.

"Natalie, this is the post-project report for one of the projects you handled last year. Some of the numbers don't match, and we suspect you inflated your results.

"The company is opening an investigation. You're suspended for now while we look into it."

I glanced down at the report. I knew those numbers well enough to recite them in my sleep, but someone had changed them beyond recognition.

Sales had been lowered by 30%, while costs had been raised by 20%. The profit column had even been changed to show a loss.

Jason came around to my side and folded his arms. He didn't raise his voice, but he didn't lower it either.

"Natalie, never thought I'd see the day. You were such a big deal last year. Mr. Cannon even poured your coffee himself during meetings, and now look at you."

The people at the nearby desks kept their heads down, but the typing around us slowed noticeably.

I looked Andy straight in the eye. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Andy came around to my chair and leaned down, lowering his voice so only I could hear.

"Natalie, Mr. Cannon isn't backing you anymore. I had drinks with him last night, and he said he gave you too much special treatment last year. You let it go to your head. I'm the one calling the shots around here now."

He straightened and casually dusted off his hands. "Pack up. You don't need to come in during the investigation. Turn in your new computer and your access card."

I didn't move.

Everyone was watching me. Some looked sympathetic, some indifferent, but most were just watching the show.

I slowly got to my feet and pulled my phone from my bag. Right in front of Andy, I opened my contacts and tapped the number I'd saved three months ago but never called.

It rang twice before a calm male voice answered, "Natalie? You finally decided to call me."

"Mr. Larkin, I've decided to accept your terms."

Michael paused and gave a bitter smile that looked more like a grimace."I was blind," he said.A few people nearby glanced over and started whispering. Trevor stood a short distance away but made no move to come over.Michael continued, his voice getting quieter. "I've lost everything. The company's gone, and my reputation is ruined. I sold my house last month, and it still wasn't enough to pay off my debts."My wife took the kids and went back to her parents. I haven't seen them in three months."He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot. "I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just wanted you to know that you were right."His lips trembled. "I-I had it coming."Silence stretched between us. The music and voices around us seemed to fade into the distance. All I could hear clearly was Michael's heavy breathing.I looked at him. Three months ago, he'd been sitting in his spacious office, telling me not to make such a big deal out of things. Now he stood in front of me, thin and worn

I turned around to find Rosa standing a couple of steps away. She wore a plain coat that looked out of place among all the suits and formal dresses in the ballroom. She wasn't holding a drink. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, her knuckles white."What are you doing here?" I asked.Rosa took half a step closer. "I-I quit."I looked at her.She bit her lip, her voice tight. "Astrel Group is really falling apart. Renvara Tech acquired part of its business last month. You probably already know about that."I nodded. She went on. "I heard Andy got a job as a manager at a small company, but he didn't even last two months. He got fired after getting on the wrong side of someone. After that, no one seemed to know where he'd gone."Jason went back to his hometown and hasn't posted anything on social media in two weeks."Then word got around that Andy had applied to more than a dozen other companies, but none of them would hire him once they ran a background check. By now

It was Michael's car.I walked out of the hotel and found the black Mercedes parked right outside the main entrance, its hazard lights blinking.Michael was leaning against the car. The second he saw me, he straightened and hurried over.In just two weeks, he looked like a different man. His temples were streaked with gray, and his eyes were sunken. He was still wearing the same tailored suit, but now it hung loosely on him."Natalie! You finally agreed to see me."I stopped three steps away. "Mr. Cannon, what is it?"He rubbed his hands together and moved half a step closer. "Natalie, the company is really struggling. Please come back. Name your terms, and I'll agree to anything."Andy's already been fired, and Jason's been transferred out. If you're still angry, tell me what else you want me to do."I looked at him and suddenly laughed. "Mr. Cannon, do you really think this is about getting even?"He froze.I spoke calmly. "When I called you, you chose to believe Andy and t

It was Rosa Reed. She used to work with me at Astrel Group and sat diagonally across from me. She was quiet, never spoke up in meetings, and always brought her own lunch. The moment she saw me, her face went bright red and she froze. "M-Ms. Sadler…"I smiled at her. "It's been a while, Rosa."She dropped her gaze, her voice barely above a whisper. "H-How have you been?"I leaned against the wall. "Pretty good. You?"She rubbed her hands together nervously, her knuckles turning red. "I-I'm doing okay."We stood there in silence for a couple of seconds. Then Rosa looked up, her eyes reddening. "Ms. Sadler, that day when they were giving you such a hard time, I-I was too scared to say anything. I'm sorry."I met her eyes and gave her shoulder a light pat. "It's okay. That's all in the past now."She blinked hard, fighting back tears, but her voice still trembled. "Ms. Sadler, the company is actually…"She stopped, like she didn't know how to continue.I looked at her and waite

Hushed voices drifted out of the break room."Did you hear? Andy got fired.""Serves him right. Of all people to get on the wrong side of, he picked Natalie.""I saw him smash her laptop that day. I still don't know what he was thinking. She brought in 200 million dollars in business. How was he ever going to make up for that?""Mr. Cannon got hit too. I heard the board suspended his bonus for six months.""He was always telling everyone to think about the big picture. Well, so much for the big picture."Andy clenched his fists and turned back toward his office. At 3:00 pm, he walked out of the building with a cardboard box in his arms. Jason followed behind him, and neither of them said a word.Meanwhile, at Renvara Tech headquarters, I sat in my office in the Strategic Development department. The city skyline stretched beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.A newly signed contract sat on my desk. The client had previously been Astrel Group's biggest account, and the deal was w

The call ended.Michael slumped back in his chair and stared at the ceiling, motionless for a long moment.Meanwhile, Andy sat in his office, typing away with a smug smile. The new staffing changes were already in place, and he'd put one of his own people in my position. As far as he was concerned, everything was under control. The door flew open.Jason rushed in, his face pale as he waved his phone. "M-Mr. Hampton! Natalie joined Renvara Tech!"Andy's fingers froze over the keyboard. "What?"Jason shoved the phone in front of him. "Renvara Tech! Trevor Larkin! They just announced it. Look!"Andy stared at the photo of me standing beside Trevor. I was wearing a much sharper suit than I had the day before. His mouth tightened into a thin smile. "So what? She went to another company. What does that have to do with us?"Jason's voice shook. "Mr. Hampton, she handled several of our biggest clients by herself last year. I just heard from Mr. Waller's office. They said they're reco
