Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
There was a brief pause on the other end before Trevor Larkin laughed.

"Good! I've been waiting three months to hear you say that. I'll come pick you up myself at 8:00 am tomorrow."

I hung up.

Andy was still standing there. The smile hadn't fully left his face, but the look in his eyes had changed.

Jason leaned closer and lowered his voice. "Mr. Hampton, who did she call?"

Andy ignored him and glared at me.

I started gathering my things, though there wasn't much to take. My laptop was already destroyed. I slipped a few notebooks into my bag and picked up the crystal trophy engraved with "Outstanding Contribution Award."

Then I walked past Andy and headed for the elevator.

Just as I reached it, Andy deliberately raised his voice behind me. "What's with the act? What does she think she can do?"

Jason laughed along with him, the sound echoing down the hallway.

I didn't respond. I tossed the crystal trophy into the trash can by the elevator. It landed with a loud clunk.

That afternoon, I put my phone on silent and tossed it into my bag. Jason called five times. I didn't answer once.

At that moment, I was sitting across from Trevor Larkin in a meeting room on the 27th floor of Renvara Tech's headquarters.

He poured me a cup of coffee himself. "Everything's finalized. I'll pick you up at 8:00 am tomorrow."

I picked up my coffee. "Okay."

Meanwhile, back at Astrel Group, Jason stood outside Andy's office with his phone in hand.

"Mr. Hampton, Natalie isn't answering."

Andy kept his eyes on his computer. "Fine. Let her. What's she going to do?"

"But that file—"

Andy waved him off. "Give it to someone else. Good riddance. I was getting sick of seeing her every day. She's just a salesperson and acts like she's some big shot."

Jason opened his mouth, then swallowed whatever he was about to say and walked away.

…

The next day at 7:58 am, Michael walked into the conference room with a cup of coffee in hand.

The long table was packed on both sides, the projector was already on, and the morning meeting was about to start.

Michael had barely sat down when his phone started buzzing nonstop. He frowned and opened the first notification.

"Industry News: Former Astrel Group Top Performer Natalie Sadler Joins Renvara Tech as Head of Strategic Development."

Below the headline was a photo of Trevor and me shaking hands.

The color drained from Michael's face. His coffee cup slipped from his hand and hit the conference table, splashing coffee everywhere.

Everyone in the room looked up at him.

Michael ignored them and called me, his fingers trembling.

"The phone you're trying to reach is currently turned off."

He immediately called Trevor instead.

Trevor picked up after two rings, amusement in his voice. "Mr. Cannon, how was your holiday?"

"Trevor Larkin! What are you trying to pull? Natalie signed a noncompete!"

Trevor chuckled. "Mr. Cannon, when Natalie closed her first deal, you were the one who told her she made the rules. You gave her your word, and everyone in this industry knows that means something.

"And that noncompete you're so sure about? Think back. Better yet, go check your records. Do you actually have a signed noncompete from Natalie? Don't be so sure of yourself, Mr. Cannon."

Michael nearly dropped his phone.

Then Trevor added, "Oh, and thanks for sending one of your top performers my way."

Michael paused and gave a bitter smile that looked more like a grimace."I was blind," he said.A few people nearby glanced over and started whispering. Trevor stood a short distance away but made no move to come over.Michael continued, his voice getting quieter. "I've lost everything. The company's gone, and my reputation is ruined. I sold my house last month, and it still wasn't enough to pay off my debts."My wife took the kids and went back to her parents. I haven't seen them in three months."He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot. "I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just wanted you to know that you were right."His lips trembled. "I-I had it coming."Silence stretched between us. The music and voices around us seemed to fade into the distance. All I could hear clearly was Michael's heavy breathing.I looked at him. Three months ago, he'd been sitting in his spacious office, telling me not to make such a big deal out of things. Now he stood in front of me, thin and worn

I turned around to find Rosa standing a couple of steps away. She wore a plain coat that looked out of place among all the suits and formal dresses in the ballroom. She wasn't holding a drink. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, her knuckles white."What are you doing here?" I asked.Rosa took half a step closer. "I-I quit."I looked at her.She bit her lip, her voice tight. "Astrel Group is really falling apart. Renvara Tech acquired part of its business last month. You probably already know about that."I nodded. She went on. "I heard Andy got a job as a manager at a small company, but he didn't even last two months. He got fired after getting on the wrong side of someone. After that, no one seemed to know where he'd gone."Jason went back to his hometown and hasn't posted anything on social media in two weeks."Then word got around that Andy had applied to more than a dozen other companies, but none of them would hire him once they ran a background check. By now

It was Michael's car.I walked out of the hotel and found the black Mercedes parked right outside the main entrance, its hazard lights blinking.Michael was leaning against the car. The second he saw me, he straightened and hurried over.In just two weeks, he looked like a different man. His temples were streaked with gray, and his eyes were sunken. He was still wearing the same tailored suit, but now it hung loosely on him."Natalie! You finally agreed to see me."I stopped three steps away. "Mr. Cannon, what is it?"He rubbed his hands together and moved half a step closer. "Natalie, the company is really struggling. Please come back. Name your terms, and I'll agree to anything."Andy's already been fired, and Jason's been transferred out. If you're still angry, tell me what else you want me to do."I looked at him and suddenly laughed. "Mr. Cannon, do you really think this is about getting even?"He froze.I spoke calmly. "When I called you, you chose to believe Andy and t

It was Rosa Reed. She used to work with me at Astrel Group and sat diagonally across from me. She was quiet, never spoke up in meetings, and always brought her own lunch. The moment she saw me, her face went bright red and she froze. "M-Ms. Sadler…"I smiled at her. "It's been a while, Rosa."She dropped her gaze, her voice barely above a whisper. "H-How have you been?"I leaned against the wall. "Pretty good. You?"She rubbed her hands together nervously, her knuckles turning red. "I-I'm doing okay."We stood there in silence for a couple of seconds. Then Rosa looked up, her eyes reddening. "Ms. Sadler, that day when they were giving you such a hard time, I-I was too scared to say anything. I'm sorry."I met her eyes and gave her shoulder a light pat. "It's okay. That's all in the past now."She blinked hard, fighting back tears, but her voice still trembled. "Ms. Sadler, the company is actually…"She stopped, like she didn't know how to continue.I looked at her and waite

Hushed voices drifted out of the break room."Did you hear? Andy got fired.""Serves him right. Of all people to get on the wrong side of, he picked Natalie.""I saw him smash her laptop that day. I still don't know what he was thinking. She brought in 200 million dollars in business. How was he ever going to make up for that?""Mr. Cannon got hit too. I heard the board suspended his bonus for six months.""He was always telling everyone to think about the big picture. Well, so much for the big picture."Andy clenched his fists and turned back toward his office. At 3:00 pm, he walked out of the building with a cardboard box in his arms. Jason followed behind him, and neither of them said a word.Meanwhile, at Renvara Tech headquarters, I sat in my office in the Strategic Development department. The city skyline stretched beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.A newly signed contract sat on my desk. The client had previously been Astrel Group's biggest account, and the deal was w

The call ended.Michael slumped back in his chair and stared at the ceiling, motionless for a long moment.Meanwhile, Andy sat in his office, typing away with a smug smile. The new staffing changes were already in place, and he'd put one of his own people in my position. As far as he was concerned, everything was under control. The door flew open.Jason rushed in, his face pale as he waved his phone. "M-Mr. Hampton! Natalie joined Renvara Tech!"Andy's fingers froze over the keyboard. "What?"Jason shoved the phone in front of him. "Renvara Tech! Trevor Larkin! They just announced it. Look!"Andy stared at the photo of me standing beside Trevor. I was wearing a much sharper suit than I had the day before. His mouth tightened into a thin smile. "So what? She went to another company. What does that have to do with us?"Jason's voice shook. "Mr. Hampton, she handled several of our biggest clients by herself last year. I just heard from Mr. Waller's office. They said they're reco
