Loss
Soon, Paul carefully folds the letter again and puts it in the box along with the others on the mahogany desk before going over to his wife and taking her into his arms as she weeps into his chest. Sadie cries for the first time in three weeks, she cries for Paul and for their son. Her little boy survived for four months before he passed like his siblings. Noah’s parents had prayed and hoped with bated breath that he would make it since Sadie was able to carry him to term unlike the five babies before him. Paul held Sadie for what seemed like hours to the couple, but in reality it was only about an hour until her heart wrenching sobs ceased before she heard Paul whisper “ sweetheart, the letter was sent two weeks ago, Sylvia should be arriving soon. Would you like to change your dress and then we can go down to the station together or would you like to wait here while I go into town to see if she has arrived?” Sadie didn't move, so Paul went to the barn to hitch the horses to the wagon in order to allow Sadie to have some time alone, but Paul knew that time wouldn’t help his wife to heal and it broke his heart. The young man closed the front door after kissing Sadie who still hadn’t moved before making the hour long trip into town by himself.

Their Unfinished Love Sylvia’s Arrival
Meanwhile at the station, Sylvia smiles as the train comes to a stop before she stands to stretch her sore muscles from the long journey. The elderly conductor removes his hat before he offers his hand to her a moment later as Sylvia carefully makes her way down the steps, her bright long sleeve, wool yellow dress flowing around her in the late spring air. She takes a deep breath as her lungs once again fill with the crisp air after her time away from her former home. It’s been a long time since she’s been at peace and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Sylvia looks around the train station to see if her best friend from childhood is somewhere in the sea of loved ones, but she’s nowhere to be found. The young woman sighs before picking up her two worn suitcases, one is filled with memories of what seems like a lifetime ago and the other is filled with her traveling clothes, before going to a nearby bed and breakfast to wait.

An hour later, Paul jumps down from the wagon and goes to the little inn after spotting his wife’s dear friend at the lonely circular table by the window. Sylvia stands up as she buttons her long, grey traveling coat before embracing Paul for a quick hug. She looks to Paul as it becomes apparent that Sadie didn’t come with her husband on this short yet exciting trip; her questions are soon answered with Paul’s short reply that Sadie is at home, resting. Paul loads the suitcases into the covered wagon before carefully helping Sylvia to get settled for the ride home. The hour-long ride is filled with small talk, but mostly with deafening silence.

Meanwhile back at the house, Sadie is finishing up in the guest room when a pale yellow box with a grey ribbon under the bed catches her eye. The young woman chooses to ignore it for the time being as she pushes it back under the bed, it’s contents still too painful to go through for the grieving woman. Sadie is thankfully soon pulled from her thoughts when the team of horses can be heard making their way to the front of the small country home. She takes a deep breath while looking around to make sure that everything is in order before making her way out to the huge wraparound porch. Paul smiles at his wife as he puts the suitcases on the steps then goes to help Sylvia out of the wagon before going to take care of the horses. Soon, Sylvia is embracing her best friend. A week had passed since Sylvia had come to Maine, she had settled into her classroom in no time and her students, especially the younger ones, were eager to learn about their teacher’s adventures before they started their lessons each morning. Sadie enjoyed having her best friend under her roof again, it was just like when they were little girls, but Sadie knew that Sylvia was still heartbroken over Phillip and she tried everything to cheer her up, but so far nothing was working. Two days had passed and Sylvia knew that she couldn’t keep her secret to herself for very much longer, so she went out to the barn where her best friend was reading the latest medical journal in the hay loft and asked if they could talk when Sadie was free. The young woman took her grey reading glasses off and put them in its case before looking down at Sylvia. The poor woman had looked like she had just had an unfortunate encounter with a ghost as Sadie chuckled softly at her expression before slowly climbing down the steep ladder and joining Sylvia on the ground. A few minutes later Sylvia finally sat down on the hay barrel after much prompting from Sadie as she took her best friend’s hands in her own before saying “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for it to happen and I wanted to tell you sooner, but I couldn’t find the right words to tell you, especially with everything you’ve gone through. Later that night after Paul came in from the fields, Sadie lays down next to her husband and curls into him as she says “ I still can’t believe that Sylvia is pregnant. I’m happy for her.” Paul kissed her forehead while he held her as she drifted off to sleep, for he knew all too well what she was thinking before sleep overcame her: no matter how happy she was for her childhood friend, Sadie had a part of her tucked away that she didn’t let show often. She was sad and angry that Noah and their other babies would never grow up. A big part of her longed for the chance to be a mother again.

It was now September 20th, 1915 and the weather was definitely getting cooler, but not too cold yet. It has been five months since Sylvia moved back to Maine, a whole eight months since she last saw Phillip and three months since she wrote to her former fiancé about the baby. School had been let out for the day and it wasn’t a moment too soon as the young teacher had a prenatal appointment, so she walked over to the clinic that Sadie purchased to expand her medical practice three months ago. Two days later Sadie and Paul’s world is shattered once more as Julian’s birth mother comes from England after receiving the letter about her ex husband’s death and fights for custody in court. The judge unfortunately rules in favor of his birth mother and with a heavy heart Julian is ripped from Sadie’s arms. The judge watches the little boy cling for dear life to Sadie, but the middle aged man is powerless to help the little boy and the couple since by law if the child isn’t in any danger then he has to go back to his mother, no matter how little she knows him.
