Chapter 2

Autor: Dottie
I looked down and realized there was a cut across the back of my hand. I had no idea when I'd gotten it.

When I didn't answer, Samuel let out a soft sigh and pulled me into his arms.

"Alright, that's enough. You've hit me, so you should be over it by now. Stop crying.

"Besides, I never intended to stay married to her. It's just a piece of paper. I'll divorce her soon enough.

"Jessie grew up being spoiled. She's fun to fool around with, but actually living with her? Just keeping her happy would wear me out."

He paused and softened his voice.

"But you're different, Regina.

"You never cause me any trouble. Being with you doesn't take so much effort. You'll make a good wife.

"Come next month, we'll get remarried. Your mom has always wanted to see you married, right? I'll even give you a grand wedding–"

Before he could finish, his phone buzzed again.

One glance at the screen, and a smile immediately appeared on his face.

"Jessie wants a cake from that bakery on the west side of town. They're about to close, so I need to hurry.

"If I don't get it, she'll make my life miserable tonight."

He looked at me, hesitated for a fraction of a second, and grabbed his car keys before leaving.

The moment I heard him mention my mother, it felt like someone had dumped a bucket of cold water over my head.

I could hear the threat behind his words.

Back when Mom was hospitalized, Samuel had paid the staggering medical bills without hesitation.

Even now, the ongoing treatment costs were far beyond what my monthly salary could cover.

The thought of this made me laugh bitterly.

Maybe a woman like me with nowhere else to turn was exactly why Samuel felt free to cheat without consequences.

As the door slammed shut, I finally collapsed onto the floor.

My gaze swept across the wrecked living room, and I suddenly had a flashback to what happened a year ago.

It was the night of my birthday party. Jessie had linked her arm through mine. Her eyes lit up.

"Regina, I've got a huge surprise for you tonight!"

She blinked mischievously. She looked exactly like she had when we were sixteen and running from the dean after sneakily eating ice cream.

I spent the entire evening looking forward to it.

It wasn't until the cake toppled over, and I saw two intertwined figures behind it. My mind went blank.

Jessie calmly draped Samuel's jacket around her shoulders and raised an eyebrow at me.

"Happy Birthday, Regina!

"This is the surprise I prepared for you. Do you like it?"

More than a decade of friendship collapsed into ruins alongside that cake.

I jolted awake from the nightmare.

Seeing Samuel sitting beside my bed left me dazed for a moment.

Before I could gather my thoughts, he pressed a bowl of soup into my hands. "Regina, I made this myself. Try it and tell me what you think."

I stared at him. I thought I was hallucinating. "Did you make it?"

He nodded and immediately scooped up a spoonful before bringing it close to my mouth.

"Yeah. I got the cake too late this afternoon, so Jessie punished me by making me cook soup for her."

He smiled. "She always comes up with the strangest ideas. I don't even know how to cook."

Although I'd already calmed down, my nose still stung unexpectedly.

I never would have imagined that this pampered rich kid, who had never lifted a finger around the house, would one day step into a kitchen for someone else.

Lost in thought, I accidentally choked on the soup.

His brows furrowed instantly. "What's wrong? Is it too salty?"

He lowered his head and took a sip himself. That was when his phone rang.

"Stay where you are. Don't move. I'll be right there!"

I didn't know what was said on the other end, but his expression changed immediately. When he left in a hurry, he bumped into me hard enough to make me stumble.

"Jessie twisted her ankle. The family doctor isn't available. Go buy some medicine and bring it to the villa on the west side. Hurry up."

I stared blankly at him as he left. After coming back to my senses, I laughed at myself. I then grabbed an umbrella and headed out.

I didn't know how I managed to buy the medicine and make it to the villa.

The moment I pushed the door open, I froze in place.

A pair of stockings had been left dangling on the stair railing.

I heard intimate sounds coming from upstairs.

Seeing this scene again shattered every bit of confidence I had left.

I let out a gut-wrenching scream before clutching my head and collapsing onto the floor.

Apparently irritated by the interruption, Jessie muttered, "What a mood killer."

Moments later, I heard hurried footsteps. Samuel came downstairs with his clothes in disarray. A bright lipstick mark was still visible on his neck.

"What were you screaming for? You've seen this enough times by now, haven't you?

"Just give me the medicine. Jessie's ankle still hurts–"

Suddenly, he stopped talking. His eyes widened in shock. "Regina! What's wrong?"

When I heard the panic in his voice, I looked down.

Rainwater mixed with my blood was trickling down my body. A dark red pool of liquid had already formed on the floor.

As the world began spinning around me, I saw Samuel lunging toward me.

After sorting everything out, Samuel returned to the hospital. Holding me in his arms, he said through choked sobs, "Regina, I've gotten revenge for you. His shoulders would tremble. He refused to eat. Meal after meal brought by the caregivers remained untouched until they grew cold.He refused to sleep too. Night after night, he sat beside my bed watching me. He was terrified that I'd open my eyes while he wasn't looking. In less than two weeks, he'd lo

The screams from the villa's basement lasted all night.Eventually, the men broke. As Samuel raised the knife again, they burst into tears and confessed everything."It was all Ms. Scott's idea."She paid us to get rid of the baby in that woman's stomach."She told us we could have some fun too. She said not to treat that woman like a person. There'd be plenty more money afterward."The security cameras had been removed beforehand, but we kept a hidden body camera. We recorded everything. If you don't believe us, watch it yourself."Samuel's hand froze in midair. As the footage played on the screen, his vision turned dark briefly. The truth was finally exposed. In the video, Jessie stood nearby with her arms crossed. The malicious smile never left her face.My desperate screams echoed through the room. I was trying to protect my stomach by curling up.I kept calling out Samuel's name desperately.Toward the end, the pleading vanished from my eyes and was replaced by despair

Samuel's eyes went wide. For a moment, he was speechless."I just said that offhand. Who told you idiots to actually obey everything she said?"Get those photos and those posts scrubbed clean before sunrise. If they're still up by morning, don't bother coming back."And once the specialists from abroad arrive, send someone to check on Regina's mother. I heard her condition isn't stable."Only after his subordinates hurriedly agreed and fled did he finally slump against the wall. With both hands braced against it, he trembled as if every ounce of strength had been drained from his body."I'm sorry, Regina. I didn't know. I didn't know."His voice grew softer and softer until it broke with emotion."Wake up. I'll stop lying to you. We'll get married again immediately. I won't hide anything from you ever again."Regina, please wake up."Near dawn, a doctor finally emerged from the emergency room with a stack of reports.Looking at Samuel, he spoke solemnly."The patient is no l

Several people grabbed Samuel and held him back. Otherwise, he would have jumped after me.He leaned out the window. The sight of the crimson pool below made his vision go black. He nearly collapsed. After stumbling down the stairs, he saw me lying motionless on the ground. Blood continued spreading beneath me.At that moment, all he could hear was a buzzing noise. Every other sound disappeared. When he finally came back to his senses, he crawled to my side. His hands trembled uncontrollably."Regina, stop joking around. Get up."For the first time, he sounded genuinely panicked. "Regina, stop scaring me."He reached out with the intent of pushing me, but he stopped just before coming into contact. He was too afraid to even touch me.He couldn't understand it. All he'd asked was for me to apologize to Jessie. Was that really enough to make me jump?"Regina, you can be angry at me if you want, but what about your mother?"Trembling, he tried to check if I was breathing. When h

I was woken up by the voices outside my ward."Is that her? She looks so innocent. Never would've guessed she'd go that far just to get rid of her own baby.""Seriously. Paying people to do that to herself? That's a new one. Guess you really can't judge a book by its cover."My heart skipped a beat. With trembling hands, I picked up my phone.Photos of me being forcibly posed in humiliating positions went viral on the internet. The whispers outside the door merged with the insults flooding my screen. My heart pounded so hard that I began hearing buzzing sounds in my head.Bang! The door was pushed open again. The attending physician came in and spoke in an anxious voice."Ms. Sullivan, your mom saw the viral posts online. The shock caused her condition to worsen. She needs surgery immediately. You have to make the payment now!"I stared blankly at him. Several seconds passed before his words finally registered.Mom was still waiting for me.At that thought, I mechanically w

When I opened my eyes again, Samuel was staring directly at me.He seemed pleasantly surprised. Without warning, he pulled me into his arms."Regina, we're having a baby!"I froze. For a moment, I even forgot to push him away. After all, I'd gone through thirty rounds of IVF without ever getting pregnant. I'd long since given up hope.My heart stirred. Just as I was about to speak, he continued."Jessie has always wanted a child. Have the baby and let her raise it."My body instantly felt numb."What did you just say?"Samuel frowned. He seemed unhappy with my reaction."Jessie hates pain. You know that. She loves kids, so just do her a favor."As he spoke, he casually transferred 50 thousand dollars into my account and kissed me. "Be good. Do as I say."I pushed him away. My voice trembled with disbelief. "Samuel! What do you take me for?"He didn't answer. Instead, he simply frowned at me as if he couldn't understand why I was making such a fuss.Only after he left to a
