Leonel

~~~
“You ready to go to court?” Bella murmurs to me, and even though I feel like I’m about to explode, I nod and kiss her forehead.
“Ready as ever.”
She frowns, then tiptoes to my ear and whispers, “liar .”
I’m not even surprised she caught me. I’m dressed in my most pristine white suit. White: the colour of fresh starts and freedom. Yet, this final court hearing feels like it’s going to kill me.
If the judge tells me Axion Tech is no longer mine, all this has been for nothing, and I’ll never be brave enough to show my face to Ava again.
I feel Riley behind me before I hear her accented voice, “Why are you breathing like you need an inhaler, Sinclair? Deep breaths, everything is going to be fine.”
She goes to Bella, both dressed in the same formal grey, and they look so much like a couple that it breaks my heart. Couples remind me of Ava.
I’m just lucky Evelyn isn't coming with Oliver. She opted to stay with Ava, which means one less couple to torture me. Pl
    Ava~~~I hear a $5,000, then a $10,000. There’s a mass gasp as someone with a pristine moustache cries for $50,000.No one counters it. I’m shocked the price went that high at all“I’m sorry sir,” I start, “this piece is actually not for sale. It’ll be donated to the museumafter the event.” Rather than accept, the man narrows his eyes, and I know he’s one of those rich entitled assholes who thinks he’s supposed to have anything in the world.“$100,000” he says smugly, and everyone gasps.A few years ago, I would have gasped too. Now, I only narrow my eyes back. That's the problem with having such an open invite, I wasn't able to sift out the prideful millionaires.“Sir, I said-” A deep voice rises at the back, “I’ll give you 1 million for it.” The hairs on the back of my neck rise.I know that voice, more than I know my own soul.The man who offered $100,000’s eyes bulge out of his head, and he uses the distracting gossip following this new offer to sit down quietly. Defeated.Who
    1 WEEK LATERAva ~~~“Up next, please put your hands together for our incredible sponsor, CEO Ava Allard!”I startle at the roaring applause. Why am I never ready for the announcer to call my name? I’m just glad it's a woman this time, not freaking Riggs.Despite my nerves, I crack a smile. It’s been half a year since the art show that changed my life, and this moment makes me feel like nothing has changed.Well…other than the fact I'm a CEO now, and I own the art show this time. I look down at my outfit; it's a crocheted green dress with Jade and emerald stones across the hem. I wanted something that felt like my $20 knitted dress from the first art show. This was close enough, even though I had it handmade for $3000. But that’s basically the same thing, right?With a deep breath, I step out from behind the curtain. Before I say a word I'm met with thunderous applause. People are on their feet, clapping for me like I just cured cancer. A few whistles go around the crowd and I can
    Leonel ~~~ “I do.” Those two words bring me alive in ways I didn't even realise were possible. The crowd tried to start murmuring again, but there's now security flanking their sides, so the hall is deathly quiet. Ava is looking at me, and we must stare at each other for what feels like forever. Unable to hold myself back, I mouth the words “I love you,” to her. She gasps quietly and then opens her lips to mouth something back. The judge, clearing his throat, brings us back to reality, and, disappointed, I turn to him as he looks at some papers in front of him. “Well.” he begins, sounding ready to be done with all of us, “The jury has given its verdict.” I hold my breath, and the world around me blurs. I feel a hand in mine, and I know Bella has clasped it from the back. Whatever is on that paper is the defining decision that changes my life forever. The judge announces, “In light of new evidence, the previous verdict against Mr Leonel Sinclair has been overt
    Ava ~~~ The crowd erupts. Yelling men and women burst out of their chairs. Many jab their fingers in the sky, exclaiming that this whole trial is madness. I don’t even have it in me to yell. I freeze there, watching as the judge tries in vain to get everyone back in their seats again. “We haven’t seen Ava in weeks! And now you want her to go run a business with Leonel!” One woman shouts. Her observation makes the crowd even rowdier. “Yeah, how do we even know she can run a business!” Yells one man still seated, but looking angrier than everyone. Honestly? Fair enough. The judge bangs his gavel for what must be the fiftieth time. He shoots Adrian a dirty look as he does it, as if to say “Look what you’ve caused.” I follow suit, grabbing my shellshocked father and saying viciously, “Why the hell would you do that?” He looks at me, unrepentant, “because you deserve it. I’ve been in hiding for years. I don’t think I’m fit to run a business anymore. My only concerns
    Ava ~~~ If Leonel thought I was missing this, he’s an idiot. I’d been at the back of the court hall with Adrian and Evie, waiting for the verdict with bated breath. I’d hoped the judge would just give Leonel his business back so that I wouldn’t have to speak up. But once the judge gave that nasty verdict, I knew I had to take centre stage. I can’t believe the whole hall fell silent to listen to what I had to say… me! I know I’ve been gone for months, but I didn’t think anyone would be so interested in me. Apparently, I’m more of a celebrity now than before. “Lord hep me.” I whisper from the podium as thousands of eyes stare. I fluff my new hair, an anxious habit I just started. But I have to say, having chin-length hair has literally released some burden off my shoulders. Now, there’s nowhere to hide. “Miss Allard,” the judge says, “I hate to rush you but we don’t have all day.” I hope I can hide my blush as I nod at him. “Sorry, your honour. I’m trying to put m
