The breakup with Leonel goes easier than expected, even though doing it still feels like a shot in the chest.

How did we even break up? We weren’t together. We had just confessed we liked each other like obsessed high school teenagers, and suddenly we’re “breaking up?” It feels a little silly, but that doesn’t stop my heart from cracking a little each time I see him.

After I left Helen and she confessed I was being watched, I was so paranoid that I had been wired all this time—maybe all my clothes had some sort of camera, and so I knew I had to leave Leonel the moment I could. Not only was it unsafe to stay with him if I was being watched by my ex, but it would also make my eventual disappearance at the Soirée a little easier if Leonel hates me.

It has taken everything in me not to throw up at the thought of leaving, of being with my ex again, but this is what’s best for everyone. Who knows? If I escaped once, I stand a pretty solid chance of escaping again.
