Chapter 24: Two Worlds, One Heart

The funeral lasted three days.

Kael's pack gathered in the forest where the settlement had once stood, their howls echoing through the trees like a collective scream of grief. Twenty-three pyres burned through the nights, their flames reaching toward a sky that offered no answers. Twenty-three families wept. Twenty-three holes remained in the fabric of the pack that could never be filled.

Lena stood at the edge of the ceremony, watching. She wasn't pack—not really, not yet. Not in the way that mattered to these wolves who had lost their own. So she stayed back, respecting their space, letting them mourn without the complication of her presence.

But she felt every sob like a knife in her chest.

"They blame themselves," Caspian murmured beside her. They'd kept their distance too, knowing that vampires weren't welcome at wolf funerals. "Survivor's guilt. They'll be looking for someone to blame."

"Me." Lena's voice was flat. "They'll blame me."

"You didn't kill those wolves, Lena."

"Lilith did. Because of me." Lena's hands clenched at her sides. "Because she wants me. Because I exist."

Caspian was quiet for a moment. Then: "That's not fair. You know that's not fair."

"Since when has fair mattered?"

---

Kael found them after the third night.

He looked exhausted—dark circles under his golden eyes, his face drawn with grief and responsibility. He'd been comforting families, organizing details, being the alpha they needed even as his own heart shattered.

"How are they?" Lena asked softly.

"Holding on." He slumped against a tree, closing his eyes. "Barely. Some of them are talking about revenge. About hunting Lilith themselves."

"That's suicide."

"I know." He opened his eyes, meeting hers. "I need you to stay away from the pack for a while."

Lena flinched. "Kael—"

"I'm not saying this because I want to." He straightened, crossing to her. "I'm saying it because some of them are blaming you. Irrationally, unfairly, but blaming you nonetheless. If they see you, if they associate you with their grief—" He shook his head. "I won't let them hurt you. But I also won't let you be a target for their anger."

Caspian's voice was cool. "So you're asking her to hide."

"I'm asking her to be patient." Kael's golden eyes flashed. "There's a difference."

Lena put a hand on Caspian's arm, calming him. "He's right. They need time. Space. I can give them that."

"Lena—" Caspian started.

"I can give them that," she repeated. "And while I do, you can show me more of your world. Help me understand. Help me *prepare*."

Caspian's red eyes searched her face. Then, slowly, he nodded.

---

The next weeks were a blur of new experiences.

Caspian took her deep into vampire territory, showing her things she'd never imagined. Ancient libraries filled with texts older than human civilization. Training grounds where vampires honed their skills over centuries. Gathering places where they shared blood and stories and *life*.

"They're not so different from wolves," Lena observed one evening. They sat in a small tavern—if you could call it that—watching vampires socialize. "They have families. Traditions. A sense of belonging."

"Every species does." Caspian's voice was thoughtful. "We just express it differently."

"And love?"

He looked at her. "What about love?"

"Do vampires love? Really love? Or is it just—" She gestured vaguely. "Possession. Obsession. Hunger."

Caspian was quiet for a long moment. Then: "I thought that way for three hundred years. I thought love was a weakness, a flaw, something that made you vulnerable. And then I met you."

Lena's heart skipped. "Caspian—"

"You changed everything, Lena. You made me feel again. You made me *want* again." His red eyes held hers. "That's love. Real love. The kind that doesn't care about species or territory or *rules*. The kind that just *is*."

She leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. "I love you."

"I know." His lips brushed her hair. "I love you too."

---

But the vampire world wasn't all acceptance and understanding.

Word spread quickly about the hybrid in their midst—the one who'd captured Caspian's heart, the one who'd brought a wolf into their sacred spaces. Not everyone was pleased.

"She's dangerous," a vampire named Marcus spat one day. He was ancient, powerful, and clearly suspicious of Lena. "She carries wolf blood. She'll betray us the first chance she gets."

"She's my mate." Caspian's voice was ice. "You'll show her respect."

"Respect?" Marcus laughed. "I'll show her nothing. And you—you're a traitor to your kind. Always have been."

Caspian moved faster than Lena could follow. One moment he was beside her; the next, he had Marcus pinned against the wall, his fangs bared.

"Say that again," he hissed. "I dare you."

"Caspian!" Lena grabbed his arm. "Stop!"

For a terrifying moment, she thought he wouldn't. Then, slowly, he released Marcus, stepping back.

"You're lucky she's here," he said quietly. "If it were just me, you'd be dead."

Marcus straightened, his ancient face pale with fury—and fear. "This isn't over, traitor."

"It never is."

---

Later, back in their chambers, Lena confronted him.

"You can't do that. Fight my battles for me."

"He insulted you."

"I don't care." She took his face in her hands. "I care about you. About us. If you start killing vampires who disagree with you, we'll never have allies."

Caspian's jaw tightened. "He called me a traitor."

"You are a traitor. To their way of thinking." Lena smiled softly. "You chose love over tradition. You chose me over them. That makes you a traitor to some. A hero to others."

He stared at her. "How do you stay so calm? So... *good*?"

"I'm not good." She kissed him gently. "I'm just tired of fighting. I want to *live*. With you. With Kael. With whoever else decides to join this crazy family."

Caspian pulled her close. "I don't deserve you."

"Probably not." She laughed against his chest. "But you've got me anyway."

---

The next morning, Lena woke to find a note slipped under their door.

*The wolves are gathering. Kael needs you. Come alone.*

Her blood ran cold.

"Lena?" Caspian stirred beside her. "What is it?"

"I have to go." She was already dressing. "Something's happened with Kael's pack."

"I'm coming with you."

"No." She kissed him quickly. "The note said alone. If Lilith's involved, we can't risk—"

"If Lilith's involved, you can't go alone."

"Caspian." She met his eyes. "Trust me. Please. I'll be back before nightfall."

He wanted to argue. She could see it in every line of his body. But slowly, reluctantly, he nodded.

"Be careful."

"Always."

---

The journey back to wolf territory took hours.

Lena pushed herself hard, using every bit of her hybrid speed to cover ground. The note haunted her—the handwriting unfamiliar, the message too vague. *Kael needs you.* What kind of trouble? What kind of danger?

She found the pack gathering at the edge of the forest—not the main camp, but a clearing she'd never seen before. Dozens of wolves stood in a loose circle, their faces grim.

And at the center, Kael.

He was on his knees.

"Kael!" Lena ran toward him, but wolves blocked her path. "What's happening? Let me through!"

"He's on trial." Marcus—the vampire from before—stepped out of the shadows, and Lena's heart stopped. "For betraying his kind. For loving an abomination."

"You." Fury surged through her. "You did this."

"I did what needed to be done." Marcus smiled—cold, triumphant. "Your wolf is accused of crimes against both our species. And you, hybrid, are accused of conspiring with him."

Lena looked past him at Kael—at her wolf, her alpha, her *love*. His golden eyes met hers, and in them she saw a message.

*Run.*

But Lena had never been good at running.

"Let him go," she said quietly. "This is between you and me."

Marcus laughed. "Oh, no. This is between all of us. And it ends tonight."

He raised his hand, and wolves moved to surround her.

Lena's pendant blazed.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
