Chapter 25: The Old Enemy

The wolves circled like predators.

Lena stood frozen at the center of the clearing, her pendant blazing against her chest, her heart pounding so hard she could hear it in her ears. Kael remained on his knees a few yards away, held down by wolves she'd once thought of as family. His golden eyes burned with helpless fury.

"Marcus," Lena said, forcing calm into her voice. "Whatever you think you're doing, this won't end well for you."

The vampire smiled—that cold, triumphant smile that made her want to rip his throat out. "Oh, I think it will. You see, I'm not alone in this. I never was."

From the shadows beyond the clearing, a figure emerged.

Lilith.

She was even more beautiful up close—flawless pale skin, dark hair that seemed to drink the light, eyes the color of blood that had never been allowed to dry. She moved like smoke, like shadow, like *death*. And when she smiled, Lena understood true terror.

"Cousin." Lilith's voice was honey and poison. "We meet again."

"You." Lena's hands clenched into fists. "You did this."

"I facilitated it." Lilith gestured at Marcus, at the wolves surrounding them. "Marcus has been working with me for weeks. Feeding me information. Helping me understand your weaknesses." She tilted her head, studying Lena like a curious cat. "And what interesting weaknesses they are. A wolf. A vampire. A *heart* that refuses to choose."

Lena's eyes darted to Kael, then back to Lilith. "If you hurt him—"

"I won't hurt him. Not yet." Lilith's smile widened. "First, I want to watch you suffer. I want to see that famous hope crumble. I want to *feel* your despair."

---

Kael struggled against his captors. "Lena, run! Get out of here!"

The wolves holding him tightened their grip, forcing him back down.

"Such devotion," Lilith murmured. "It's almost touching. Almost." She turned back to Lena. "You know, I spent my whole life in Seraphine's shadow. Watching her fail. Watching her *lose*. To you. To a half-breed who couldn't even pick one man."

"Seraphine lost because she didn't understand love." Lena's voice was steady, though her heart raced. "Neither do you."

Lilith's eyes flashed. "Love is weakness. You proved that by tying yourself to these two. All I have to do is cut those ties, and you'll fall apart."

"You think so?" Lena met her gaze without flinching. "Try me."

For a long moment, the two women stared at each other—hybrid and pureblood, cousins bound by blood and hatred. The wolves watched in silence. Marcus hovered at the edge, clearly enjoying the show.

Then Lilith laughed.

"Oh, I'm going to enjoy breaking you." She gestured, and two wolves grabbed Lena's arms. "Take them both. We have preparations to make."

---

They were separated.

Lena fought as they dragged her away—kicking, scratching, using every ounce of her hybrid strength. But there were too many. They bound her wrists with silver chains that burned her skin and drained her power. They threw her into a small cave and sealed the entrance with rocks she couldn't move.

For hours—or maybe days, she couldn't tell—Lena sat in darkness, alone with her thoughts and her fear.

*Kael. Caspian. Please be okay.*

She tried to reach through the bond, but the silver muffled everything. She couldn't feel them, couldn't sense them, couldn't know if they were alive or dead.

The uncertainty was its own kind of torture.

---

When they finally came for her, Lena was ready.

Or so she thought.

They dragged her to another clearing—this one larger, more formal. Torches lined the perimeter, casting dancing shadows across the gathered crowd. Wolves and vampires both, hundreds of them, watching with expressions ranging from curiosity to hatred.

At the center, a makeshift throne.

And on that throne, Lilith.

"Welcome, cousin." Lilith's voice carried across the clearing. "I've gathered everyone who matters to witness this. Your wolf. Your vampire." She gestured, and Lena saw them—Kael and Caspian, bound and kneeling on either side of the throne. "Your family."

Lena's heart lurched. "Kael! Caspian!"

"We're here." Kael's voice was rough but alive. "We're okay."

"For now." Caspian's red eyes met hers, and she saw the message there. *Stay strong.*

Lilith rose, descending from her throne to stand before Lena. "You've caused me so much trouble, cousin. Magnus was useful. Now he's dead. Seraphine was powerful. Now she's gone. And through it all, you keep *surviving*."

She circled Lena slowly, like a predator examining prey.

"I've decided that ends today. But not quickly. Not mercifully." She stopped in front of Lena, close enough to touch. "I'm going to make you choose."

"Choose what?"

Lilith smiled. "Which one dies first."

---

The clearing went silent.

Lena's blood turned to ice. "No."

"Yes." Lilith gestured at Kael and Caspian. "Your wolf or your vampire. Pick one, and the other lives. Refuse, and they both die. Slowly. Painfully. While you watch."

"You're insane."

"Perhaps." Lilith shrugged. "But I'm also in control. So choose."

Lena looked at Kael—her wolf, her alpha, her first love. His golden eyes blazed with fury and love and something that looked almost like acceptance.

Then she looked at Caspian—her vampire, her protector, her unexpected heart. His red eyes held centuries of loneliness finally ended, finally *loved*.

Both of them. Her *both*.

"I can't," she whispered.

"Then they both die." Lilith raised her hand.

"WAIT!" The word tore from Lena's throat. "Wait. Please. There has to be another way."

"There isn't." Lilith's eyes glittered with cruel amusement. "That's the point. Love means having something to lose. And I'm going to make you lose everything."

---

Kael spoke first.

"Lena." His voice was steady, calm, *certain*. "Choose him."

Lena stared at him. "What?"

"Caspian. Choose him." Kael smiled—that warm, beautiful smile she'd fallen in love with. "He's waited three hundred years for you. He deserves more than a few months. He deserves forever."

"No." Caspian's voice cut through. "Choose him, Lena. He's your mate. Your alpha. Your *future*. I've had my time. It's enough."

"You're both insane." Tears streamed down Lena's face. "I'm not choosing. I *can't* choose."

"You have to." Lilith's voice was gleeful. "Tick tock, cousin."

Lena looked at them—her wolf, her vampire, her *men*. Both willing to die for her. Both loving her enough to let go.

And in that moment, something inside her cracked.

---

The pendant exploded with light.

It wasn't gentle like before—it was *furious*. Blazing. *Unstoppable*. The silver chains around her wrists melted. The bonds holding Kael and Caspian shattered. Wolves and vampires stumbled back, shielding their eyes.

Lilith screamed.

"What—what is this?"

"This," Lena said, her voice echoing with power she didn't know she had, "is what happens when you threaten my family."

The light surged forward, wrapping around Lilith like a cocoon. The ancient vampire struggled, fought, *screamed*—but she couldn't escape. Couldn't break free. Couldn't do anything except disappear into the light.

When it faded, Lilith was gone.

And Lena collapsed.

---

She woke in Kael's arms.

Caspian knelt beside them, his face pale with worry. The clearing was empty—no wolves, no vampires, no threat. Just the three of them and the slowly lightening sky.

"Lena." Kael's voice cracked. "Lena, can you hear me?"

"I hear you." She managed a weak smile. "Did I... did I kill her?"

"I don't know." Caspian's voice was quiet. "She's gone. That's all that matters."

Lena tried to sit up, failed, settled for lying back against Kael's chest. "You were both willing to die. For me. For each other."

"We meant it." Kael kissed her forehead. "Every word."

"I know." Tears filled her eyes again. "That's what saved us. That's what saved *me*. Your love."

Caspian's hand found hers. "Our love."

They held each other as the sun rose over the clearing, painting the sky in shades of gold and rose. Lilith was gone. The threat was over. And they were alive—all three of them—against every odd.

"We should go home," Lena whispered.

"Home." Kael nodded. "I like the sound of that."

"Me too." Caspian almost smiled. "Lead the way."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
