Chapter 66: The Pregnancy

A month had passed since Sera's group arrived.

The camp had grown beyond anything Lena had imagined. Cabins stretched in every direction, connected by winding paths and communal spaces that had been planned and built by dozens of willing hands. Gardens flourished where there had been only dirt, their rows heavy with vegetables and herbs and flowers. Children, so many children, played in fields that had once known only blood and fear. Their laughter echoed through the trees, a sound that still made Lena's heart ache with wonder.

Lena walked through it each morning, marveling at what they had created. She passed the nursery where the youngest children were cared for while their parents worked. She passed the training grounds where wolves and vampires and hybrids trained together, their movements synchronized after months of practice. She passed the council hall where representatives from every group gathered to make decisions. It was not perfect. Nothing ever was. But it was home.

"You are doing it again." Kael's voice came from behind her, warm with amusement. "That thing where you stare at everything like you cannot believe it is real."

She laughed softly, turning to face him. The morning sun caught his golden eyes, made them shine. "Can you blame me? Look at this place. A year ago, this was a temporary camp. Now it is a village. A community. A home."

"I look at it every day." He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. "And every day, I am grateful. For you. For him. For all of it."

They stood together, watching their community wake. Wolves emerged from their cabins, stretching in the morning light. Vampires retreated to their dark spaces, preparing for sleep. Hybrids moved between both worlds, carrying food and water and messages.

But something felt different this morning.

A warmth in her chest that was not Kael's embrace. A flutter in her stomach that was not hunger. A presence that had not been there before, small and faint but unmistakable.

"Kael." Her voice was strange, uncertain. "Something is wrong. Something is different."

He was instantly alert, his body tensing, his golden eyes scanning for threats. "What? What is it? Are you hurt?"

"I do not know. I feel" She pressed a hand to her stomach, where the flutter had been. "I feel something. Something I have never felt before."

His golden eyes widened. Understanding dawned across his face. "Lena, are you"

"I do not know. Maybe. I do not" She swayed, suddenly dizzy, the world tilting around her.

Kael caught her, lowering her gently to the ground, cradling her against his chest. "Caspian!" His roar echoed through the camp, bounced off the trees, carried across the central square. "CASPIAN!"

---

Caspian appeared within seconds, his ancient face pale with worry. He had been in the council hall, reviewing the morning reports, but Kael's roar had pulled him out of his chair and across the camp faster than he had moved in months.

"What happened? What is wrong?" He knelt beside them, his cool hands already reaching for Lena. "Is she hurt? Is it an attack?"

"She felt something. In her stomach. Then she got dizzy." Kael's voice shook. "Is she sick? Is something wrong with her?"

Caspian's hands pressed gently against Lena's stomach, his eyes closing, focusing, feeling. His ancient senses reached inward, searching for the source of the disturbance. The tent was silent. Kael held his breath. Lena stared at Caspian's face, watching for any sign of what he was discovering.

Then his eyes opened, wide with wonder.

"Lena." His voice was barely a whisper, thick with emotion. "You are pregnant. With child. A new life is growing inside you."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Lena stared at him, her mind refusing to process the words. They did not make sense. They could not be true. "What? How? I did not even know"

"Pregnant." Caspian's lips curved into the most beautiful smile she had ever seen, his red eyes bright with tears. "We are going to have a baby. You and me and Kael. A child. Our child."

Kael's breath caught. His golden eyes went wide. "A baby? Our baby? A wolf and a vampire and a hybrid made a baby?"

"Our baby." Caspian met his eyes. "All of us. Bound together in this child."

Lena burst into tears.

---

The news spread through camp like wildfire.

Mira arrived first, her face alight with joy, her feet barely touching the ground. She burst into the tent and threw her arms around Lena, careful not to squeeze too hard. "A baby! Oh, Lena, a baby! I cannot believe it. I am going to be an aunt!"

Damon followed, his grief-stricken features softening for the first time in months. He stood in the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest, but his eyes were warm. "Congratulations. This is wonderful. Dara would have been so happy."

Lilith appeared, her ancient eyes knowing. She did not need to be told. She had felt the new life stirring from across the camp. "I sensed it. The new life. It is strong. Powerful. There is something special about this child."

She smiled, a rare, genuine smile that transformed her ancient face.

"This child will be extraordinary. Mark my words."

Celeste hugged Lena carefully, mindful of her suddenly precious state. Her hands lingered on Lena's stomach, her healer's senses confirming what Caspian had discovered. "How do you feel? Are you okay? Do you need anything? Herbs for the nausea? Something for the fatigue?"

Lena laughed through her tears, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love. "I do not know. I just found out. I have not even had time to think."

"Well, start thinking." Mira grinned. "You are going to be a mother. You are going to have a tiny little baby who looks up to you for everything."

---

That night, they barely slept.

The three of them lay tangled together in their bed, hands constantly moving to Lena's still-flat stomach, marveling at the life growing inside her. Kael's warm palm rested on her belly. Caspian's cool fingers traced gentle circles. Lena's own hands covered theirs.

"Can you feel it?" Kael whispered, his voice soft with wonder. "The baby?"

"Barely. Just a flutter. Like a butterfly trapped inside me." Lena placed his hand where she had felt it. "There. Do you feel?"

His eyes widened. "I think so. Just, just a tiny movement. A pulse."

"That is our child." Caspian's voice was thick with emotion. "Our child. Growing inside you. Half you, half us. A new kind of being."

"Who do you think it will look like?" Lena asked, staring at the ceiling.

"Hopefully you." Kael grinned. "You are the pretty one. I am too hairy. Caspian is too pale."

Caspian snorted. "Careful, wolf. I am ancient, not blind. And I have excellent bone structure."

Lena laughed. "You are both beautiful. Our child will be lucky. Loved. Wanted."

They fell silent, each lost in their own dreams of the future.

---

The next weeks were a whirlwind.

Lena's body began to change, slowly at first, then more noticeably. Her belly rounded. Her breasts swelled. Her cravings became legendary throughout the camp.

Pickles and chocolate at three in the morning. Kael hunted down both without complaint, returning with jars and bars and a grin. Fresh fruit in the middle of winter. Caspian used his vampire connections to import it from warmer climates, calling in favors that had been owed for centuries.

Strange combinations that made no sense to anyone else. The entire camp rallied to satisfy them, wolves and vampires and hybrids competing to see who could find the most unusual ingredients.

"She is growing a human," Mira reminded everyone who complained about the midnight trips to the river for ice or the early morning expeditions for wild berries. "She can have whatever she wants."

"Hybrid," Lena corrected from her chair, her feet swollen, her back aching. "Growing a hybrid."

"Even more reason." Mira grinned. "Hybrids need extra care."

---

The pregnancy was different from anything they had expected.

Lena's light, usually steady and warm, fluctuated wildly. Some days it blazed so brightly she could not hide it, golden radiance pouring from her skin, lighting up the tent like a small sun. Other days it dimmed to almost nothing, leaving her exhausted and cold, shivering even under piles of furs.

Kael and Caspian took turns staying with her, never leaving her alone for more than a few minutes. When her light was too bright, Caspian stayed close, his cool presence tempering the heat. When her light was too dim, Kael held her, his warmth chasing away the cold.

"You are hovering," she told them one evening, as they both fussed over her pillows.

"We are protecting," Kael corrected.

"Same thing."

"Not even close." He tucked a blanket around her legs.

Caspian settled beside her, his cool hands gently massaging her aching feet. His fingers found the knots in her muscles and worked them loose. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired. Huge. Hungry." She leaned back with a sigh. "Happy. So happy it scares me."

"Happy is good." He kissed her knee. "Happy is the most important thing."

---

The months passed.

Spring turned to summer, the days growing longer and warmer. Summer turned to fall, the leaves shifting from green to gold to red. Lena grew larger, heavier, more ready. The camp prepared around her, building a nursery next to their cabin, gathering supplies from across the territory, planning for the arrival of the first child born into their new community.

And through it all, the three of them grew closer.

Nights were spent with Kael's head on her belly, listening to the baby's heartbeat, his golden eyes closed in concentration. Caspian's cool hands traced patterns on her skin, following the movements of the child inside. Both of them talked to the baby, telling stories, singing songs, loving.

"She knows us already," Kael marveled one night, feeling a small kick against his cheek. "I can feel it. She knows who we are."

"Of course she does." Lena smiled, running her fingers through his hair. "She has been surrounded by love from the very beginning. That is all any of us ever wanted."

Caspian's voice was soft. "That is all any of us ever needed."

---

The due date approached.

Lena could barely move, barely breathe, barely function. Her belly was huge. Her back ached constantly. Her feet had disappeared somewhere beneath her. But she was happy, happier than she had ever been.

"Any day now," Mira said, visiting with fresh bread and worried eyes. "How are you feeling?"

"Like a whale." Lena groaned, shifting in her chair. "A very pregnant, very uncomfortable whale."

"That is normal." Mira grinned. "Well, normal for humans. For hybrids? No idea. You are breaking new ground here."

"Thanks. That is very reassuring."

Mira laughed and hugged her carefully, mindful of the belly. "You are going to be an amazing mother, Lena. I know it. We all know it."

---

That night, the pains began.

Small at first, easy to ignore, easy to dismiss as false labor. Then stronger. Then unmistakable. Lena woke from a restless sleep, her hand flying to her stomach, her breath catching in her throat.

"Kael." Her voice was tight with pain and excitement. "Caspian. It is time. The baby is coming."

They were at her side instantly, faces pale with a mixture of excitement and terror. Kael's golden eyes were wide. Caspian's red eyes were bright.

"Now?" Kael's voice cracked. "It is happening now? Tonight?"

"Now." Another contraction hit, and she gasped, her hand gripping his arm. "Get Lilith. Get Celeste. Get everyone who knows what they are doing."

Kael ran. Caspian stayed, holding her hand, his cool presence a steady anchor in the storm. "You are going to be fine. You are strong. You are brave. You have faced worse than this."

Lena laughed through the pain. "Have I? I have faced armies. I have faced Lilith. I have faced the Forsaken. None of that prepared me for this."

Caspian kissed her forehead. "You were born for this. We were all born for this."

The tent filled with people. Lilith arrived, her ancient face calm. Celeste came with herbs and clean cloths. Mira organized the helpers. Damon stood guard outside.

And Lena labored, surrounded by love.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
