Chapter 68: The Birth

last update 게시일: 2026-05-05 20:56:15

The baby's first cry echoed through the cabin.

It was a thin, reedy sound, high and clear and impossibly alive. It cut through the chaos of the birth, through Lena's exhausted sobs and Kael's terrified breathing and Caspian's whispered prayers. It was the sound of a new life entering the world, of a new story beginning, of everything they had fought for finally bearing fruit.

Lena held her against her chest, trembling with exhaustion and joy. The baby was small, smaller than she had expected, with a tuft of dark hair and tiny fingers that curled and uncurled like sea anemones. Her skin was pink and new, and her eyes were closed against the brightness of the world.

Kael pressed close, his golden eyes wet with tears that spilled down his cheeks. He reached out one finger and touched the baby's hand, marveling at how her tiny fingers wrapped around his. Caspian knelt beside them, his ancient face transformed by wonder, all the centuries of loneliness and pain washed away by this single moment.

"She is perfect," Kael whispered. His voice cracked. "Absolutely perfect. I did not know something so small could be so perfect."

"She is." Lena's voice broke. "She is really here. After everything, after all the battles and the losses and the fear, she is really here."

Lilith moved quietly around them, cleaning up, giving them space. Her ancient face was soft, her eyes bright with unshed tears. Mira hovered in the doorway, crying openly, her hands pressed over her mouth. Damon stood behind her, his grief-stricken face softened by the miracle before him, the shadows under his eyes less dark than they had been in months.

"What should we name her?" Caspian asked softly. His red eyes never left the baby's face.

Lena looked at the child in her arms, at the gold flecks already visible in her dark eyes, at the tiny fingers wrapped around Kael's, at the life that had grown inside her. "Aurora." The name came to her like a gift, like a memory, like something she had always known. "Like the dawn. Because she is a new beginning. For us. For this camp. For everyone."

Kael nodded, his tears falling onto the baby's blanket. "Aurora. I love it. It is perfect."

Caspian's lips curved into that rare, beautiful smile. "Perfect."

---

The camp celebrated for days.

Wolves howled their joy from every hilltop, their voices carrying across the valley. Vampires raised toasts with ancient wines brought up from cellars that had not been opened in centuries. Hybrids danced and sang and lived, their laughter bright as stars. Food appeared from nowhere, carried by hands that wanted to give, prepared by hearts that wanted to serve. Gifts piled up at the cabin's door, blankets and toys and tiny clothes, each one a blessing.

But in the quiet moments, when the celebrations faded and the crowds dispersed, it was just them.

Aurora slept between them in the big bed, her tiny chest rising and falling with each breath. Kael could not stop staring at her, his golden eyes tracing the curve of her cheek, the flutter of her eyelids, the way her lips pursed in her sleep. Caspian could not stop touching her tiny hand, his cool fingers gentle against her warm skin.

Lena could not stop crying. Tears of joy, tears of relief, tears of overwhelming love.

"She has your nose," Kael murmured, his voice soft so as not to wake her.

"And your stubbornness." Caspian's lips twitched. "She refused to be born for hours. She wanted to make an entrance."

"She has your wisdom." Lena touched Caspian's hand. "I can feel it already. She is old inside. Ancient."

"And your light." Caspian's voice was soft. "She glows, just like you. I can see it beneath her skin."

---

The first weeks were a blur.

Aurora demanded attention at all hours. Feeding, changing, soothing, loving. She had no concept of day and night, no patience for waiting, no tolerance for being alone. She cried when she was hungry, cried when she was tired, cried when she simply wanted to be held.

Kael took night shifts, walking Aurora through the camp while she fussed, his warm body and steady heartbeat soothing her when nothing else would. He sang wolf songs to her, howling melodies that had been passed down for generations. Caspian handled the days, his ancient patience perfect for endless rocking and singing. He told her stories of the old world, of empires that had risen and fallen, of love that had endured against all odds.

Lena fed her, held her, memorized her. Every wrinkle, every sound, every tiny expression. She catalogued them all in her heart.

They were exhausted. They were overwhelmed. They were happy.

"She has got you wrapped around her finger," Mira observed, watching Kael bounce Aurora gently on the training grounds.

"Absolutely." He grinned, not even pretending to deny it. "And I would not have it any other way. She is my daughter. She can have anything she wants."

Caspian appeared beside them, yawning. "She has been awake for three hours straight. I have sung every lullaby I know. I have told every story I remember. Nothing works."

"Make some up." Mira laughed. "That is what parents do. You improvise."

---

Aurora grew quickly.

Too quickly, Lena sometimes thought. Each day brought something new, a smile that transformed her tiny face, a coo that sounded almost like a word, a reach for her fathers' faces that made their hearts stop. Each week brought more personality, more her, more of the person she was becoming.

"She is going to be trouble," Kael predicted, watching Aurora grab Caspian's nose with surprising strength and hold on.

"She is going to be wonderful." Caspian gently freed himself, rubbing his nose. "Trouble and wonderful. They are not mutually exclusive."

Lena laughed, her heart full. "That is our daughter. Trouble and wonderful. Just like her parents."

---

The first time Aurora laughed, it changed everything.

They were in the cabin, playing with her on the fur rug, making silly faces. Kael crossed his eyes and stuck out his tongue, and Aurora burst into giggles. The sound was like bells, like sunshine, like hope made audible. It filled the small space, bounced off the walls, echoed in their hearts.

Kael froze. His golden eyes went wide. "Did she just"

"She laughed." Lena's eyes filled with tears. "Our daughter laughed. She has never done that before."

Caspian's voice was thick with emotion. "That is the most beautiful sound I have ever heard. In three hundred years, I have never heard anything so beautiful."

They gathered around her, kissing her tiny cheeks, making silly faces, making her laugh again and again. The sound filled the cabin, filled their hearts, filled everything. It was the sound of joy, pure and simple and unstoppable.

---

The months passed.

Aurora learned to sit up, her tiny back straightening, her head held high. She learned to crawl, scooting across the fur rug with determination. She learned to walk, taking her first wobbly steps into Kael's waiting arms.

She spoke her first words, "Mama" to Lena, who wept. Then "Dada" to Kael, who howled with joy. Then "Papa" to Caspian, who cried for an hour, his ancient composure crumbling completely.

She discovered the world with wide-eyed wonder, fearless and curious and alive. She touched flowers and watched them glow in response. She reached for the barrier and felt it warm beneath her fingers. She looked at the stars and seemed to understand them.

"She is going to be a handful," Lilith observed, watching Aurora chase a butterfly through the garden, her tiny legs pumping, her laughter trailing behind her.

"She already is." Lena smiled. "But she is our handful. Our gift. Our miracle."

Lilith's ancient eyes softened. "You are good parents. All three of you. She is lucky."

"We are trying." Lena looked at her husbands, playing with Aurora in the sunlight, spinning her in circles until she shrieked with joy. "That is all any of us can do. Try."

---

Aurora's first birthday was the biggest celebration the camp had ever seen.

Hundreds gathered in the central square, wolves and vampires and hybrids, all of them part of this strange, beautiful family. Gifts covered a long table, blankets and toys and clothes and treasures. Food filled every surface, dishes from a dozen different cultures. Music played constantly, wolves howling and vampires singing and hybrids dancing.

Aurora sat at the center on a small throne of cushions, wearing a tiny crown of flowers that Mira had woven for her. She was thoroughly unimpressed by the attention, her gold-flecked eyes scanning the crowd with something that looked like judgment.

"She has got your expression," Kael told Lena. "The I am tolerating this look."

"She has your stubbornness." Lena grinned. "The I will do what I want attitude."

Caspian snorted. "She has both. We are doomed. This child will rule the world."

They laughed together, watching their daughter hold court, accepting gifts with regal indifference, occasionally deigning to smile at someone who pleased her.

---

That night, after the celebration ended and Aurora slept, they sat together on the cabin's porch.

The sky was clear, the stars brilliant, the moon full and bright. The barrier shimmered in the distance, a soft golden glow that kept them safe.

"Look at that sky." Lena leaned against Kael. "So many stars. Each one a story."

"Each one a hope." Caspian's voice was soft. "Each one a dream that someone somewhere is wishing."

"What is our story?" Lena asked. "What will they say about us? In a hundred years? In a thousand?"

Kael was quiet for a moment, thinking. Then: "That we loved. That we fought. That we built something worth fighting for. That we did not give up when giving up would have been easier."

Caspian nodded. "That we found each other against all odds. That we chose love when hate was the easier path. That we created family where there was only division."

"That we raised a daughter who will change the world." Lena's eyes glistened. "That we gave her everything we had and trusted her to carry it forward."

They held each other under the stars, their daughter sleeping safely inside, their family gathered around them, their future bright with possibility.

It was more than enough. It was everything.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
