Chapter 92: The Saboteur

The symbols haunted Aurora's dreams.

She saw them every time she closed her eyes—carved into the barrier, glowing with dark magic, pulsing with the Devourer's hunger. Whoever had created them knew exactly what they were doing. Whoever had created them was close.

Too close.

"The magic is old," Theron said the next night. They gathered in the clearing, the barrier's dying light casting strange shadows across their faces. "But it's not ancient. It's been renewed recently. Within the past few decades."

"That means whoever's doing this is still alive," Rylan said. "Still active."

"Still here." Theron's silver eyes were grim. "In the city. Watching. Waiting."

Aurora's blood ran cold. "A traitor."

"It's the only explanation that fits."

The word hung in the air, heavy and terrible.

Traitor. Someone inside the city walls, someone they knew, someone they trusted, was working to destroy everything they'd built.

"How do we find them?" Rylan asked.

"Carefully." Theron spread his notes across the fallen log. "The symbols are keyed to a specific kind of magic—old, dark, powerful. If we can trace its source, we might be able to identify who's using it."

"What kind of magic?"

"The kind that leaves traces. Residue. Whoever cast these spells has been doing it for years, maybe decades. That much dark magic leaves a mark."

"On the barrier?"

"On the caster." Theron met Aurora's eyes. "If we can find someone who's been touched by darkness—someone who's changed, who's different, who's been corrupted—we might find our saboteur."

Aurora thought about everyone she knew.

Her parents, who had built this city with love and sacrifice. The council members, who had dedicated their lives to protecting it. The guards, the merchants, the healers, the teachers—all of them part of the community she'd grown up in.

Could one of them be a traitor?

Could someone she loved be working with the Devourer?

"We need to tell the council," she said. "They need to know."

"No." Theron's voice was firm. "If we tell them now, the saboteur will know we're onto them. They'll go underground. Destroy the evidence. We'll never find them."

"Then what do we do?"

"We keep investigating. Quietly. Carefully. We find the source of the magic before they find out we're looking."

Rylan nodded slowly. "He's right. If we tip our hand too soon, we lose our only chance."

Aurora looked between them—Rylan's steady brown eyes, Theron's silver gaze. They were both watching her, waiting for her decision.

"Fine," she said. "We keep it secret. For now."

But the words tasted like ash in her mouth.

The investigation continued for days.

Each night, they gathered in the clearing, sharing discoveries, narrowing their focus. Theron traced the dark magic's signature, following it through the barrier's foundations. Rylan tracked scents near the damage sites, looking for anyone who didn't belong. Aurora used her light to probe the symbols, to understand how they worked, to find their source.

And every night, the guilt grew heavier.

She was keeping secrets from her parents. Lying to their faces. Pretending everything was normal while the barrier crumbled and a traitor lurked in the shadows.

She'd never felt so alone.

"You're quiet tonight."

Rylan's voice came from beside her. They were walking back to the city after another long night of investigation, the moon high overhead.

"I'm fine."

"You're not." He moved closer, his brown eyes searching her face. "You've been quiet for days. Ever since we found the symbols."

"I'm just tired."

"Aurora." He stopped, turning to face her. "Talk to me."

She wanted to. Wanted to pour out all her fears, her doubts, her guilt. Wanted to tell him how sick she felt keeping secrets from her parents, how terrified she was that they'd never forgive her, how alone she felt even with him beside her.

But the words wouldn't come.

"I can't," she whispered.

"Can't what?"

"Can't talk about it. Not yet." She met his eyes. "I'm sorry."

Rylan studied her for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"When you're ready," he said. "I'll be here."

They walked the rest of the way in silence.

The city gates loomed ahead, guards nodding as they passed. Aurora slipped through the streets, avoiding the late-night crowds, until she reached the cabin at the edge of town.

A light was on in the window.

Someone was waiting for her.

She took a breath, schooled her features into calm, and walked inside.

"Hey, Mom," she said, forcing a smile. "Sorry I'm late."

Lena looked up from her book, her grey eyes soft. "You were with Rylan?"

"Yeah. We were just... talking."

"About what?"

Aurora's throat tightened. "Nothing important."

Lena studied her for a long moment. Then: "Okay. Get some sleep. You look exhausted."

"I will. Love you."

"Love you too, baby."

Aurora climbed the stairs to her room, closed the door, and leaned against it.

Another lie. Another secret. Another crack in the trust between them.

She didn't know how much longer she could do this.

The barrier flickered at midnight.

Aurora felt it through the walls, through the floor, through the very air. A shudder. A weakening. A cry of ancient magic failing.

She ran to the window.

The barrier glowed—not steady and strong, but wild and unstable. Light rippled across its surface like water in a storm. Shadows pressed against it from the other side, reaching, hungry.

This was worse than before. Much worse.

"What's happening?" Lena's voice came from downstairs.

Aurora didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Because she was watching the barrier fail—and she knew, with terrible certainty, that whoever was sabotaging it was getting closer.

The family gathered in the cabin's main room, their faces pale in the flickering light.

Lena stood at the window, her grey eyes fixed on the barrier. Kael paced behind her, his golden eyes blazing. Caspian sat in his chair, his red eyes distant, calculating.

"We need to reinforce it again," Kael said.

"It won't hold," Aurora whispered.

Everyone turned to look at her.

"What do you mean?" Lena asked.

Aurora's throat tightened. She wanted to tell them. Wanted to explain about the symbols, the sabotage, the traitor in their midst.

But Theron's voice echoed in her head: Not yet. We need proof first.

"Nothing," she said. "I just... I'm scared."

Lena crossed to her, pulling her into a hug. "We all are, baby. But we'll get through this. We always do."

Aurora hugged her back, tears burning her eyes.

She wanted to believe her mother.

But the barrier was failing, the traitor was still out there, and she was running out of time.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
