Second Chance: The Rebirth of the Luna Queen

Aurora’s POV

“Your condition is getting worse, Luna.”

Doctor Freya’s voice was gentle, laced with sympathy, but she didn’t need to tell me what I already knew.

I was dying.

The shadow venom coursing through my body had spread too far. Every heartbeat felt weaker than the last, every breath heavier than the one before it. It was as though darkness itself had wrapped its fingers around my soul, patiently waiting to pull me away.

There was only one regret left in my heart.

“I know…” My voice came out weak, almost inaudible. “But… I need to see my mate… one last time.”

A flicker of sadness crossed Dr. Freya’s face.

“Unfortunately, the Alpha hasn’t come to see you.”

Her words were soft, but they still cut through me like a blade.

Sebastian…

I had always known he never truly loved me.

I was simply the mate the Moon Goddess had chosen for him, nothing more.

Still, I had foolishly hoped that one day he would look at me the way other Alphas looked at their Lunas. Hoped that my love would eventually melt the ice around his heart.

Even after I had taken the witch’s curse meant for him…

Even after sacrificing my own life…

Nothing had changed. He didn’t even show up to see me.

“You need to rest, Luna,” Dr. Freya said quietly as she adjusted my blanket. “I’ll come back to check on you.”

I no longer had the strength to answer so I simply blinked.

With one last sympathetic glance, she left the room.

Silence swallowed the hospital room.

I stared at the ceiling while the venom continued burning through my veins. Every second felt like an eternity until the door slowly creaked open again.

Hope instantly leaped inside my chest.

Sebastian… Did he finally come?

Summoning the little strength I had left, I turned my head toward the entrance.

The hope inside me shattered almost immediately.

It wasn’t Sebastian. It was Lexi, my best friend.

She stepped inside wearing an elegant crimson ceremonial gown embroidered with silver threads that shimmered beneath the room’s lights. She looked radiant… almost like a bride.

But it wasn’t the dress that unsettled me.

It was the smug smile playing on her lips.

“Hello, dear bestie.” Her voice dripped with mockery. “How are you feeling today?”

A cough escaped me before another wave of pain surged through my body.

The shadow venom spreading deeper.

“Why…” I struggled to breathe. “Why are you dressed like that? Is there… an occasion in the pack?”

Lexi smiled wider.

“Well…” she said casually, smoothing imaginary wrinkles from her gown. “Let’s just say I’m practicing for my coronation as Luna… once you finally take your last breath.”

My heart skipped painfully.

I frowned at her.

“Why would you… say something so cruel?”

Instead of answering immediately, she walked closer until she stood beside my bed.

“Well, it’s not just me.” She tilted her head. “Even Sebastian can’t wait for you to die.”

She smiled sweetly.

“So he can replace you.” Then she leaned closer. “And guess who’s going to be standing beside him as Luna when you’re gone?”

A loud ringing exploded inside my ears.

The room spun around me.

No… No… this can’t be true. Sebastian might not love me, but he would never… Would he?

Images flashed across my mind.

The way Greyhound Pack had invaded Crimson Pack by surprise, while everyone scattered for safety, I saw their sorcerer raise her staff and send a curse straight at Sebastian .

Without thinking, I had thrown myself in front of him. The curse struck me instead.

Ever since that day, I had been imprisoned inside this hospital room, slowly dying while my mate never once came to see me..

Two whole months, two months of unbearable pain and waiting. Yet I still love him, I still crave to see him

“No…” I whispered, shaking my head. “Seb… would never. He wouldn’t do that to me.”

Lexi laughed.

“Really?” She reached into her handbag. “Maybe this will convince you.”

She pulled out a beautifully designed invitation and stretched it toward me. Then she suddenly laughed again.

“Oh, my bad.” She covered her mouth on sarcasm “I forgot you’re worse than a vegetable.”

She unfolded the invitation herself before holding it where I could read it.

The elegant golden letters blurred through my tears.

“Coronation Ceremony of Alpha Sebastian Vale and Luna Lexi Belmont.”

At the bottom held Sebastian’s unmistakable signature.

My heart broke into pieces.

This… This was why he never came.

He wasn’t busy with pack affairs. He had already replaced me and the most painful part was that she wasn’t a stranger… She was my own best friend.

Tears streamed down my face.

“Why?” I whispered brokenly. “Why, Lexi? How could you betray me like this? You’re my best friend.”

Something inside her snapped.

“Best friend?” She scoffed. “We were never friends much more best friend.”

Her eyes burned with years of buried resentment.

“You were supposed to be my shadow. The ordinary girl standing behind me. But somehow you became everyone’s favorite.”

Her breathing grew heavier.

“When I worked hard enough to get an A, you always got an easy A+. The teachers adored you. You had parents who loved you to bits.”

“While everyone looked at me as the poor orphan your family decided to help.”

I slowly shook my head weakly.

“That’s… not true.”

“Shut the fuck up!”

The scream echoed through the room.

For a brief moment, silence settled between us.

Then she laughed bitterly.

“As if that wasn’t enough… You stole the only person who could’ve changed my life forever.”

Fresh tears rolled down my cheeks.

“No…”

“I was supposed to become Crimson Pack’s Luna!”

Her face twisted with hatred.

“But the Moon Goddess had to be unfair. She handed Sebastian to you.”

A cruel smile slowly spread across her lips.

“So now… I’m simply taking back what should have been mine.”

The hospital room door suddenly burst open.

Dr. Freya rushed inside, panic written all over her face.

“Luna… your father…”

My eyes widened. “My Father?”

The only person who had stayed beside me through every painful day. The only person who still believed I would recover.

“What happened to my father?”

Before Dr. Freya could answer, Lexi spoke first.

“Oh him… Father dearest objected.”

She folded her arms.

“As expected, he opposed us, he choose you, his biological daughter over his adopted daughter. So Sebastian took care of him.”

Ice spread through my body.

“What… did you do?”

“Oh, don’t worry.” She shrugged carelessly. “He isn’t dead.. Not yet. I’m not that cruel.”

A wicked smile crossed her face.

“Although he’ll be tried for treason and exiled. I’ll just let the rogues finish the job for me.”

“No!”

Anger surged through my dying body, with every ounce of strength I had left, I reached for her.

Lexi effortlessly stepped aside.

My weakened body pitched forward and crashed violently onto the cold hospital floor.

The impact sent unbearable pain through my body. My breathing immediately became ragged.

The venom moved even faster. The heart monitor beside me began screaming.

Dr. Freya rushed to my side, tears already filling her eyes as she desperately began chest compressions.

“Luna! Stay with me!”

But I couldn’t. Everything around me was fading.

Faces blurred… Voices grew distant… The memories of my life replayed in reverse before my eyes.

Darkness slowly descended over my vision.

Then.. The hospital room door slammed open.

Sebastian stormed in.

He finally came but it was too late.

Through my fading vision, I watched Lexi throw herself into his arms, crying loudly.

That sob…

For the first time… I recognized it for what it was.. Fake tears.

The act I had fallen for over and over again.

Sebastian gently pushed past her and rushed toward me.

He shoved Dr. Freya aside before gathering my broken body into his arms.

His lips moved desperately. He was saying something.

But I couldn’t hear him anymore.

The only sound reaching my ears was the long, deafening flatline of the heart monitor.

I was dead.

As the darkness finally swallowed me whole, I made one last desperate prayer to the Moon Goddess.

Please… Give me another chance.

A chance to live differently, to protect the people I love and to make everyone who betrayed me pay.

Then…

I heard it.

Shrill! Shrill! Shrill!

A loud school bell pierced through the darkness.

My eyes snapped open.

I gasped sharply as warm sunlight streamed through familiar classroom windows.

Students chatted around me as if nothing had happened.

I looked down at my hands.

No bruises... No dark veins from the venom, No hospital gown.

Confused, I slowly lifted my head.

The familiar classroom, wooden desks, blackboard and familiar faces.

Recognition struck me like lightning.

I wasn’t dreaming.

I was back.

Back to my senior year.

The year that would shape the rest of my life.
