Chapter 94: The Closer

last update 게시일: 2026-05-05 21:22:42

The nights blurred together.

Aurora lost track of how many times she'd slipped out of the cabin, how many hours she'd spent in the clearing, how many secrets she'd kept from her parents. The investigation had become her whole world—the symbols, the sabotage, the dying barrier.

But something else was happening too.

Something she hadn't expected.

She was falling for Theron.

It started small.

A brush of hands when he passed her notes. A lingering glance when she answered a question. The way his silver eyes softened when she laughed—really laughed, not the forced laughter she used to hide her fear.

She told herself it was nothing. Just proximity. Just the intensity of their shared mission. Just her tired mind looking for comfort in a dangerous situation.

But the feeling grew.

And Rylan noticed.

"You're staring at him again."

Aurora startled, nearly dropping the notes she'd been studying. Rylan stood at the edge of the clearing, his brown eyes unreadable.

"I'm not staring."

"You are." He moved closer, his voice quiet. "You've been staring at him for weeks. Every night. Every time he speaks."

"I'm just listening."

"You're just watching." Rylan stopped beside her. "And he's watching you back."

Aurora's throat tightened. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Yes, you do." His voice was gentle, but something in his eyes looked almost sad. "You just don't want to admit it."

Theron was at the barrier's edge, his silver eyes fixed on the dying light. He didn't seem to notice them—or pretended not to.

Aurora turned back to her notes, her heart pounding.

She couldn't be falling for Theron. It was too complicated, too dangerous, too wrong. He was a stranger. A vampire. Someone who'd appeared in her life with warnings and secrets and a mission that could get them both killed.

And yet.

And yet, when he looked at her, she felt seen. Not as Lena's daughter, not as the hybrid heir, not as a weapon to be wielded. But as herself.

No one had ever made her feel that way.

"You should be careful," Rylan said quietly.

"Careful of what?"

"Of him." His brown eyes were serious. "Of your heart. Of getting hurt."

Aurora wanted to argue. Wanted to tell him he was wrong, that she wasn't falling for Theron, that her heart was her own.

But the words wouldn't come.

Because he was right.

They worked through the night, tracing the dark magic's signature, documenting the symbols, planning their next steps. But Aurora's focus kept drifting to Theron—the way he moved, the way he spoke, the way his silver eyes lit up when he discovered something new.

She'd never met anyone like him.

So ancient, yet so present. So knowledgeable, yet so curious. So guarded, yet so gentle.

"You're distracted," Theron said, not looking up from his notes.

"I'm fine."

"You're staring." He glanced at her, a hint of amusement in his silver eyes. "Again."

Aurora's face flushed. "I wasn't—"

"You were." He set down his notes, turning to face her fully. "Is something wrong?"

No. Everything was wrong. The barrier was failing. A traitor lurked in the shadows. And she was falling for someone she barely knew.

"Just tired," she said.

Theron studied her for a long moment. Then: "We should rest. We won't be any good to anyone if we exhaust ourselves."

"I'm not tired."

"You're lying."

Aurora wanted to argue, but her body betrayed her. A yawn escaped before she could stop it.

Theron smiled—small, warm, real.

"Rest," he said. "I'll keep watch."

They sat on the fallen log, the barrier glowing softly before them.

Aurora leaned back, staring at the stars. Theron sat beside her, close but not touching, his silver eyes fixed on the dying light.

"Can I ask you something?" she said.

"Anything."

"Why did you come here? Really?"

Theron was quiet for a moment. "I told you. To warn you."

"But why us? Why this city? Why not warn the others before they fell?"

"Because I didn't know." His voice was soft. "I didn't know what was causing the barriers to fail. I only knew that they were failing. And by the time I understood—"

"By the time you understood, it was too late."

"Yes." He turned to face her. "I've watched too many cities fall. Too many people die. Too many families destroyed." His silver eyes held hers. "I couldn't let that happen again."

"So you came here."

"So I came here." He paused. "And I found you."

Aurora's heart pounded.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean—" He reached out, hesitating, then tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I mean that you're different, Aurora. Your light. Your heart. Your courage. I've never met anyone like you."

"You've only known me for a few weeks."

"Long enough." His voice was barely a whisper. "Long enough to know that you're extraordinary."

Aurora couldn't breathe.

He was so close—close enough to touch, close enough to kiss, close enough to lose herself in.

"Theron—"

"I know." He pulled back, his silver eyes dark. "I know this is complicated. I know I shouldn't—"

"Shouldn't what?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he stood, moving to the barrier's edge, putting distance between them.

Aurora watched him go, her heart aching.

She wanted him to come back. Wanted him to finish what he'd started. Wanted him to choose her, even if it was wrong, even if it was dangerous, even if it could never last.

But he stayed at the barrier's edge, his back to her, his silver eyes fixed on the dying light.

And she stayed on the log, alone with her feelings.

They didn't speak for the rest of the night.

When dawn came, Theron gathered his notes and left without a word. Aurora watched him go, her heart heavy.

She'd almost had something—something real, something hers—and now it was slipping away.

"Aurora?"

She turned. Rylan stood at the edge of the clearing, his brown eyes soft.

"You saw," she said.

"I saw."

"He almost—"

"I know." Rylan moved closer. "I know."

Aurora's eyes burned. "What do I do?"

"I don't know." He sat beside her. "But I'll be here. Whatever you decide."

She leaned against him, grateful for his steady presence.

She'd lost Theron's almost-kiss, but she hadn't lost Rylan's friendship.

And right now, that was enough.

She walked home as the sun rose, her mind churning.

Theron had almost kissed her. Almost crossed the line between partners and something more. And then he'd pulled away.

Because he was scared? Because he thought it was wrong? Because he didn't feel the same way?

She didn't know.

But she intended to find out.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
