Chapter 2

Author: Lotus
His arms stayed frozen around me for a long time.

In the end he just hauled me off the ground, shoved me back into the car, and locked the doors.

"We're going home."

"Which home?" I asked.

His throat worked. "The estate. Where we all live."

I laughed once. "That would just be an eyesore for you. Drop me off outside any motel. Don't worry, I'll be spending my own money."

"Elena!"

He cut me off, loud enough to be frightening.

And I saw something surface on the face of this man who'd picked fights his whole life and never once backed down—something almost hurt.

"You were raised in the palms of our hands. All three of us," he said. "And now you want to stay in some filthy little motel? Would it kill you to give in a little?"

I found it almost funny.

"But isn't the person being held in your palms now named Sofia Vitale?"

His whole body flinched. Probably remembering.

Because the ones who'd announced to a full church today that I was a "counterfeit" were those three.

And I—who'd grown up at the sides of these three men since I was six—was "the fraud who stole the real princess's identity."

I laughed openly, even as tears fell.

When he was ten, his father locked him in isolation and starved him.

When he was close to dying of hunger, I was the one who hid bread in my skirt and brought it to him, who stayed with him until dawn.

At fourteen I ran a fever, and he carried me on his back to find a doctor, injured himself and not caring.

Back then I thought I really had a family.

Before I crossed over, I was an orphan.

Enlisted at nineteen. At twenty-four, I stepped on a landmine during an operation.

Spine fractured, half my organs pulped.

My last thought before losing consciousness was—there's no one in this life who'll even come to claim my body.

When I opened my eyes again, I was a six-year-old girl being delivered to an estate in Sicily.

A voice in my head said:

【Reach the required affinity with all three heirs, and complete a wedding with one of them, to receive your payout, return to the real world, and heal all damage.】

I asked it: "Who are you? What do I need to do?"

And after that, nothing. Not another word for fifteen years.

The car was very quiet.

Dante had one hand on the wheel, the other still gripping my wrist.

When I couldn't sleep as a child, this was exactly how he'd held on.

As an orphan, I had craved that favoritism beyond words.

I'd even thought about abandoning the mission and staying forever.

But after Sofia appeared, every bit of that tenderness became hers exclusively.

The car stopped at the estate gates.

I shook off his hand and pushed the door open.

"Elena." He braced against the car door, his voice a little thin. "I broke a rib pulling you back. Aren't you going to help me?"

"If it's broken, go find a doctor," I said. "I'm not a physician."

I pushed open the doors to the great hall.

The first thing I saw was Sofia.

She was wearing my dress, holding my cat, drinking my wine.

Sebastian knelt on one knee before her, feeding her dessert, smiling gently:

"You've been through a lot today. Nothing like this will ever happen again."

Even Luca gave her a faint smile when he looked at her.

Once, I was the only one who could make him smile.

Sofia lifted her head, saw me in the doorway, and raised an eyebrow.

"Oh, sister's back. I hadn't gotten around to thanking you—your clothes, your men. They all suit me very nicely."

Luca turned to me and said calmly:

"Come here. Shell chestnuts for your sister."

【Host.】

The system's voice suddenly sounded in my head.

【Detecting an abnormally rapid drop in your emotional state. Distress has reached critical threshold... Would you like me to block the pain for you?】

Dante's tears fell.Sebastian bit his lip until it bled.Luca watched me without moving, his fingers shaking violently."But now."I drew a deep breath."I have a new home. I have people who genuinely care about me, and a whole crowd of children waiting for me to come back.""I'm not staying here again."I stared at the blocker in Luca's hand:"Worst case, I die one more time. This life was salvaged from a wreck to begin with."Luca's hand went white around the blocker. He stared at my face like he was trying to carve it into memory. And then his fingers slowly opened. The blocker slipped out of his hand and hit the floor with a clack."I'll let you go."His voice was almost inaudible.Dante's head snapped around. "Luca!""I'm letting her go." Luca repeated it, his voice hollow. He bent and drew a dagger from his boot. The movement was too fast for anyone to react. The sound of the blade sinking into his chest was very quiet, like a sigh.He dropped to his knees, blood welling from the

Luca reacted fastest and kicked her square in the chest.Sofia flew backward screaming, slammed hard into the wall, and slid down to the floor. She lay there, bloody foam spilling from her mouth:"It's all because of you... they destroyed me... it's all because of you..."Her voice grew weaker and weaker, and then she stopped breathing.Luca didn't even glance at her.He only watched me carefully, his voice pitched low, as if afraid of frightening me:"You're not hurt?"I looked at the hope in their eyes and laughed."System," I said. "As the former owner of that body, I order you to erase it."Granted authorization, it answered brightly:【Understood! You're right here in person, so making it disappear doesn't count as killing the female lead!】The next second, that body vanished as if it had never existed. All three of them froze at once."The me of this world is already dead," I said. "You can kill Sofia, you can kill more people—none of it will do anything but drag this entire world

I opened my eyes."I have nothing to do with that world anymore."It cut in urgently:【I know! If that world weren't about to be destroyed, I would never disturb you!】【After you left I arranged several new female leads. They killed every one of them!】【Luca performs a soul-summoning ritual in the basement with his own blood every day. Dante slaughtered two families just because someone claimed to know a way to resurrect the dead—and it turned out to be a lie!】【After Sebastian preserved that body, he used extremely... cruel methods to extract Sofia's system out of her, and he interrogates that system every day about how to wake you. He hasn't slept in half a month!】I sighed.I hadn't expected them to become obsessive to that degree. The system pleaded with me:【Please, I'm begging you. If the world fully collapses, every innocent person inside it dies along with it.】I was silent a long while. The sound of children laughing drifted across the yard."All right. I'll go back. The child

I was perfectly calm:"No need. No amount of apology changes anything. It would only annoy me."The system didn't press.【Understood, host. Be a kind person."Now I had the means to live up to that.I spent four months rebuilding the place from the ground up.I named it the Lighthouse. Not for any poetic reason.Mama Maria always used to say an orphanage should be like a lighthouse, so lost children know which way to go.The first group

【They never actually wanted to hurt you. The things they did before—that was because Sofia and her system deceived them.】The system's voice was full of guilt:【But I understand that the damage already done is irreversible. I'm very sorry.】I thought of the afternoon Luca first smiled at me.Dante saying: "From now on you've got big brothers. Nobody gets to push you around."And that wound on Sebastian's left arm, cut down to the bone.My heart still gave a twist of pain. Those kindnesses hadn't all been fake. But the harm that came later had all been real too.【Sofia told them that the moment you completed your mission, you would disappear forever.】【And that the only way to keep you was to make sure you never completed it.】So the way they'd hurt me was, in fact, because they loved me?Absurd. The system was quiet for a few seconds, then went on:【Host, I'd like to show you some things. Luca's lips were moving, but no sound came out, his face gone white in an instant.Dante crashed in past him, staggered, and dropped to his knees beside me.His hands shook as he pressed them over the bullet hole at my temple, blood pouring out between his fingers."Doctor!" he snarled. "Get a doctor here! Now!"His ribs were still wrapped, and the violent movement tore them open again. But he just kept pressing on the wound like a man gone mad.Sebastian came in last.He didn't shout. He didn't rush over.He just stood there, staring at the wedding ring on the floor. Then his strength gave out and he sank to his knees, repeating one thing over and over:"She's dead... she doesn't want us anymore..."Sofia had come in with the expression of someone about to enjoy a show. But when she saw the blood across the floor and the hole in my head, that expression cracked. It took her only an instant to recover. She rushed in with reddened eyes:"Oh God... sister... it's all my fault, I shouldn'
