chapter 3

The deal my father meant was a consignment of arms at the east dock.

The sum involved made the last one look like nothing.

At the meeting, my father opened the file. "Letitia will liaise with the buyer. Vito will handle security, Lorenzo will run backup, and Rocco will escort the shipment. Fiore..."

He paused. "You stay at the estate and keep the communications lines clear."

I looked at him. "Someone is already assigned to communications, Father. This is a major deal. I should be on site."

Rocco scoffed. "You, on site? If you question the buyer into silence, who will ever dare do business with us again?"

"That is basic security awareness. I have to judge whether a buyer can be trusted. Or is it that you simply don't care whether the deal is safe?"

Rocco's expression changed. "You're splitting hairs again!"

"I am not. I am confirming facts."

Letitia spoke at just the right moment. "Fiore, my health is poor, so all I can manage is the easy job of liaising with the buyer. If you want to participate, you can take my part. I'll stand beside you and carry your documents. I don't mind."

I looked at her. "Are you helping me, or reminding everyone that I'm deliberately taking your job?"

Letitia's eyes immediately filled with tears. "I-I didn't mean that..."

"Then what did you mean?" I pressed. "You said you'd give me your part of the operation. Why add that you'd stand beside me carrying documents? If you truly wanted me to take charge, you'd step away instead of staying there to watch me."

Tears spilled from Letitia's eyes.

My mother slammed a palm on the table. "Fiore! That's enough! Letitia meant well, and you won't be satisfied until you make her cry?"

"I didn't make her cry. She chose to cry. Every sentence makes it sound as if she's being wronged and sacrificing herself, and then all of you follow her lead and turn on me. She used this trick at the banquet. She's using it again, and you still can't see it."

The room went dead quiet.

My father finally broke the silence. "Meeting adjourned. The plan stands. Fiore stays behind."

When I woke the next morning, daylight flooded the windows.

I looked at the clock on the nightstand. Nine in the morning.

Before bed, I'd confirmed that the team was supposed to assemble at ten that night.

Knowing my father, there would be a short pre-operation briefing around five that afternoon.

I didn't need to be up early, but habit told me to inspect the equipment in the communications room first.

I went downstairs. The living room was empty.

Bruno stood to one side and inclined his head. "Good morning, Miss Fiore."

"Where is everyone?"

"Your father left at five this morning with your mother, Miss Letitia, and your brothers."

That early?

I turned immediately for the communications room on the ground floor.

I pushed open the door. The room was empty.

The main radio was gone from the desk. So were the backup handhelds beside it.

The wall-mounted monitoring panel had been stripped out.

I turned to Bruno. "Who removed everything?"

He answered carefully. "Miss Letitia said before leaving that she was taking it all with her to ensure smooth communications at the site."

"Is there anything spare in the house?"

Bruno shook his head. "No, miss. That's the only set on the estate. Miss Letitia said you should take the day off and not trouble yourself with the deal."

I called them one after another. Only my mother picked up.

I told her what had happened. "Mother, someone removed every piece of communications equipment from the estate."

She was silent for a few seconds. "Letitia was worried reception would be poor at the site, so she brought the equipment. Don't worry. The team up front will handle everything."

"By 'they,' you mean Vito, Lorenzo, Rocco, Letitia, and Father. Is that right?"

"That's right."

"Anyone else?"

"Who else?" My mother sounded puzzled.

"Me," I said. "It was agreed that I would go."

"Fiore, Letitia was trying to protect you. She said this was your first operation and worried you might panic and slow the team down. She thought you should get used to things at the estate first and wait for our good news."

"Get used to things at the estate? There is no communications equipment here, no monitoring feed, and even the files on the target are gone. Mother, did you leave me here to let me adjust, or because you never intended to take me?"

My mother lost patience. "Why do you have to question everything? Letitia was worried about you. She barely touched her breakfast. She was afraid you'd panic and make a mess. She was thinking of you."

"I don't need—"

My mother cut me off. "Enough! Fiore, stop. You're not the only person in this family.

"If I could choose, I would rather not have you for a daughter!"

I ended the call, then turned to Bruno. "What do I need to do to have my name struck from the Family?"

Three months later, my twenty-second birthday arrived. That morning, Tina messaged me. "The entire Family is betting on whether you'll come back to the estate today."I wrote back, "What's the prize for a correct guess?"Tina sent a shrugging emoji. "Your mother had Bruno order a cake.""I did not invite them.""They haven't said they're coming. They ordered a cake."I did not reply. At five in the afternoon the doorbell rang.I looked through the peephole. My father and mother stood at the front.Vito, Lorenzo and Rocco were lined up behind them, each holding a gift bag with my name on it.Letitia stood at the back.Six of them. Not one missing.I opened the door and leaned against the frame."Who gave you the address?"Letitia lowered her head. "I-I looked up your delivery records...""Delivery records are private. What authority did you use to access them?"She went pale. "I, I had my old assistant help...""Your former assistant? You still have access to his credentials?"Letitia's

The next afternoon Letitia walked into the disciplinary committee's interview room of her own accord. She submitted five written statements, along with message logs, dates, and specific instructions from each time Elio contacted her.I stood in the corridor outside the council chamber and watched through the glass as she turned the pages one by one.Elder Leo came out and handed me a preliminary report stamped with the committee's seal. The investigation confirmed that Elio had been trading intelligence with a rival Family for a long time and had leaked information on seven major operations.Letitia cooperated and gave a complete account, so the committee treated her leniently. She was demoted to peripheral status, barred from core Family affairs for three years, and had her assets placed under council supervision.I folded the document and put it in the inside pocket of my coat."What did Letitia say?""She signed it without objection," Elder Leo said. After Elio's arrest, the Family

That night Letitia came to the foot of my building. When I came down she was in a thin coat with her lips white from the cold."Sister, let's talk."I checked the time. "Ten minutes.""Elio approached me six months ago. He said Father planned to push me out of the inner circle because I'm not a biological daughter.""What evidence did he show you?""There was no evidence..."I could hardly believe it. "You believed him with no evidence?""He said that once you came back, Father would give you every important assignment. He said that if I didn't do something, my name would eventually disappear from the bloodline register.""What did he have you do?"Letitia bit her lip. "At the east docks, he told me to access the file early. He said he only wanted to inspect the cargo. In exchange, he'd create a small problem for you during the operation so Father would begin doubting you."I looked at her. "Did you know what your actions would cause?"Her tears came down. "I was afraid of being sent a

At noon the next day Elder Leo's formal notice went into the family chat and onto the council's notice board."The council has verified that the intake authorization for the east dock shipment was forged and that another person used the signature. Those involved have been referred to the Family disciplinary committee. The record of Fiore Rossi's voluntary removal remains valid and will carry no dishonorable designation."Less than ten minutes after it went out, my mother called."Fiore, why take this to the council? The disciplinary committee has already called Letitia in for questioning. She woke with a fever this morning!""Mother, are you calling to ask why I wouldn't let Letitia keep lying, or to tell me how worried you are because she's sick?"My mother hesitated. "I'm your mother. Of course I worry about you too.""Worry about what happened to me? Are you worried because I submitted evidence proving I didn't sign for the shipment, or because the council rejected the request for a

I didn't look back. I hailed a cab and gave the driver an address. Before long, the cab stopped in front of an apartment building on the other side of the city.I'd bought the apartment with the first major earnings of my career after college. After checking that no one had broken in, I received a message from my cousin Tina."I hear you ran away from home. Letitia posted an apology letter to the family chat. Your mother and brothers are beside themselves over how distraught she looks."Rocco messaged me privately to defend Letitia. "Fiore, if you've got the nerve, stay away from the Rossi Family forever. I'll have Bruno delete your fingerprints from the security system right now!"Lorenzo messaged me too. "Fiore, Father hasn't stamped the removal in the bloodline register. Until he does, Elder Leo's action is only a provisional entry."I laid the removal form flat on the table, took a photograph, and sent it. "Removal doesn't require the Godfather's approval."Lorenzo grew agitated. "

My mother let go of Letitia's hand and came forward two steps. "Who told you to move out?""No one. I applied to have my name struck from the Family, and Elder Leo has already finalized it."Letitia gave me a pitiful look. "Fiore, is this because we left for the handover site without you this morning? Please don't be angry. I was only worried you couldn't handle it.""So you took all the equipment? If something had gone wrong on site, how was I supposed to contact anyone? Shout?"Tears spilled down Letitia's face. "I was wrong, Fiore. I was wrong. I shouldn't have acted without asking..."My mother patted her back. "Fiore, don't open with accusations. First, tell me exactly what you're doing. What do you mean, struck from the Family?""It means exactly what it sounds like. As of today, my name is no longer Rossi. My name has been crossed out in red in the Family's bloodline register. I gave up my inheritance, territory, and Family protection.""You've lost your mind!" Rocco charged ove
