Chapter 1

"She failed... she failed!"

"Holy crap! The chief's heir can't even shift!"

Everyone in the tribe had once looked at me with reverence and expectation.

Now their eyes held nothing but horror and contempt.

The high priest's hand trembled around his staff as he stared at my neck, where a few dark greenish-black scales had emerged.

They looked like the scales of something... not a serpent.

My fiancé, Kael Mercer, the fiercest warrior in the tribe, strode onto the platform.

He pulled off his cloak and wrapped it tightly around me.

"Don't be scared, Lia. One failed attempt means nothing. You'll always be my fiancée and the heir to this tribe."

The deputy chief and my closest friend, Vivian Hart, followed right behind him. Her eyes were red-rimmed as she stepped in front of me and roared at the crowd below.

"Shut your mouths! Anyone who dares mock the heir is making an enemy of me!"

I leaned into Kael's arms, and my racing thoughts finally began to settle.

I still had Kael and Vivian.

My foster father, Rowan Vale, had been in a coma for two weeks. The healer said his life force was fading by the day.

I had to become chief. Only then could I use the tribe's resources to get the medicine that might save him.

Back in my tent, Kael and Vivian stayed by my side.

"Lia, don't overthink it. Just rest. The ceremony probably failed because Rowan's coma has been weighing on you too much." Kael tucked the blanket around me, his voice as gentle as it had been for the past ten years.

Vivian brought over a bowl of calming herbs. "He's right. Drink this. Kael and I will handle everything. Just focus on getting better."

I nodded and drained the bitter medicine in one gulp. Sleep came quickly.

Drifting between waking and dreaming, I thought I heard low voices outside the tent.

My mind was hazy. I couldn't make out the words. I caught only a few fragments.

I struggled to sit up and lifted a corner of the tent flap.

In the moonlight, Kael and Vivian stood behind a tree not far away.

Vivian sighed and took Kael's hand. "Seeing her stand up there so helpless broke my heart too. But Kael, you're the sharpest blade. You deserve the finest sheath. It hurts me to see you always taking care of her. You need someone who can fight beside you, not someone you have to carry."

Kael's voice was thick with pity. "Lia's body is too fragile right now. Being chief means facing bloodshed and danger. Her failure to shift must be a sign that the Beast God doesn't want her to carry such a heavy burden. If she becomes chief, it'll only get her killed."

He clasped Vivian's hand and sighed. "The tribe needs someone strong enough to lead it. Viv, we both know that. Once we're in control, we can give her a safe, quiet place to live and keep her away from all this danger. That's the best protection we can give her, don't you think?"

Vivian wrapped her arms around Kael. "I'll stand with you. Together, we'll look after Lia."

They smiled at each other in the moonlight, looking exactly like a pair of secret lovers.

My blood ran cold. I lowered the tent flap and retreated into the darkness.

So that was it.

No wonder Vivian had been urging me to rest lately. No wonder Kael had been stepping in for me at every turn.

In their eyes, I was already a useless figurehead they could replace whenever they pleased.

I closed my eyes, feeling the dull sting in my palm where my nails had broken the skin.

What a joke. Only moments ago, I'd been grateful to have them.

It didn't matter anymore.

As far as I was concerned, I no longer had a fiancé or a best friend.

All that mattered was becoming chief and saving Rowan. I could settle everything else later.

A month later.A tall stone statue stood in the center of the tribal square. It showed Rowan wearing his old dark serpent cloak. He held a scroll in one hand and bent down to speak to a little girl beside him. She looked up at him with bright eyes.Carved into the base were the words: "He taught us that strength isn't meant to set us apart, but to protect those who are weaker."I stood before the statue with the entire tribe gathered behind me."From this day forward," I said, turning to face them, "there will be no more division between lizards, Silver Serpents, and dragons. Everyone in this tribe will be treated equally."People murmured among themselves, but no one objected."Rowan spent his whole life working toward this. I'll finish what he started. If you can't accept my rule, you're free to leave. But if you stay, you will follow this law."I raised my hand. A ball of golden dragon fire appeared above my palm and flickered gently."Whether I'm a dragon or a Silver Serpent, we ar

I was about to return to my tent when I heard shouting behind me."Vivian attacked the guards!"I spun around.Vivian charged toward me, covered in blood. She clutched a sharp bone shard, her eyes wild with rage."Aurelia! Die!"She lunged at me, aiming the bone shard at my throat.I raised my hand without thinking. Golden light was already forming in my palm, but someone was faster.A man rushed at Vivian from the side and knocked her away from me.The bone shard missed my throat and plunged deep into his chest.Kael.He had broken free from the guards escorting him out of the tribe and returned after hearing the commotion. He was completely blind, but he had tracked Vivian by her voice. At the last second, he threw himself between us and took the attack meant for me.Vivian hit the ground. Guards rushed forward and pinned her down.Kael collapsed at my feet, the bone shard sticking out of his chest. Blood ran from his mouth. His ruined eyes stared blindly upward, but he was smiling.

When they brought Kael out, he was calmer than I'd expected. He walked to the center of the square, didn't try to defend himself, and simply dropped to his knees."Aurelia," he said, looking up at me, his voice hoarse, "I'm not asking you to forgive me."I said nothing."I ripped the seal from your chest. I believed Vivian's lies. I watched them tie you to the stake." He swallowed hard. "I deserve to die."I still said nothing."But I want to say one thing." He bowed low, pressing his forehead to the ground. "When I asked you to marry me, I truly loved you. But I changed, and that's my fault. I never wanted you dead. Vivian told me you were a lizard and said she had proof. She said you were dangerous to the tribe. I chose to believe her because I didn't want to admit I'd fallen out of love with you. I used the tribe as an excuse for betraying you."His voice broke."Someone like me doesn't deserve to be a judge. I don't deserve to stay in this tribe either."I looked at the man kneelin

The next day.The tribal square was packed with people. When Vivian was brought out, she was barely recognizable. She looked as if she had aged ten years overnight. Half of her hair had turned white, and a dark scab covered the wound at the corner of her mouth. But the moment she saw me, she jerked her head up, her eyes full of hatred."Aurelia!" She spat at me. "What are you so proud of? You're a mongrel dragon! You don't even know if you're a Silver Serpent or a dragon. What right do you have to sit up there and judge me?"I ignored her and nodded to the guard beside me. "Bring in the witness."The witness worked in the kitchens. She knelt before the crowd, trembling all over, but spoke clearly. "That night... Deputy Chief Hart brought the medicine to the old chief's room herself. She told me... if anyone asked, to say it was the heir's order. I was scared... I didn't dare refuse..."One witness after another came forward. Vivian grew paler with every statement. Finally, she sank to

"This is insane! She's not a lizard! She's a dragon!""Beast God! A dragon... I thought they were only legends!"Panic swept through the crowd.I descended slowly from the sky, my bare feet landing on the scorched earth. My newly healed skin was smooth and pale, and every scale gleamed in the sunlight.I walked toward Vivian. She kept backing away, her lips trembling. "No... that's impossible... you were...""You were ashamed to call me your friend, Vivian. I'm ashamed I ever called you mine."I raised my hand and slapped her so hard that she flew into one of the altar's stone pillars. She coughed up blood and crumpled to the ground, unable to get back up.I turned to Kael. His mouth opened and closed several times before he finally managed to speak. "Lia...""Shut up," I said. "You don't deserve to say my name."To my surprise, Kael quickly recovered from the shock. He rushed into the middle of the crowd and pointed at me."It's an illusion! This is dark magic!"He rushed to Vivian's

I was jolted awake by screaming.Dawn had barely broken. Wails tore through the air outside my tent.I dragged myself up and opened the tent flap. In the distance, a crowd had gathered near Rowan's tent.My stomach dropped. I stumbled outside and ran.The wound on my chest split open. Blood seeped through the bandages, but I didn't stop.I burst into Rowan's tent and came face to face with Silas, his face pale and his body shaking. He saw me. His lips trembled for a long time before he managed a single sentence. "Miss Vale... the chief... he's dead."For a moment, I couldn't breathe.Rowan lay on the bed, his face bluish gray, with a streak of fresh blood at the corner of his mouth. His expression was frozen in his final moment, as though he had wanted to say something but never got the chance. On the small table beside him sat a bowl of medicine, half finished.Someone had poisoned it.And three days ago, I had sent someone to gather serpentgrass.I stood rooted to the spot, my whole
