Chapter 2

Author: Little Footprints
Lynn smiled warmly when she saw me.

"Susan."

But I couldn't bring myself to smile.

I forced a faint smile. "You didn't have work today?"

"My internship ended. Susan, can I come work at the Clayton Group?"

She lowered her head, looking a little embarrassed.

"You and Mr. Clayton have paid for my education for years. I want to do something for you both."

[Our girl is so thoughtful. I'm going to cry.]

[Unlike someone who spends every day whining to her husband about cutting her finger.]

[But it's really hard to get into the Clayton Group. So many people try and fail. Wouldn't the female lead be getting in through connections?]

My stomach tightened.

Without the comments, I probably would have let her in without a second thought. Then everything might have happened just as they said.

When I spoke again, my voice sounded strained.

"I remember you majored in jewelry design. The Clayton Group mainly deals in finance, technology, and real estate. That doesn't really match your degree, does it?"

Lynn's expression stiffened.

Perry seemed about to smooth things over, but I cut in before he could speak.

"I know executives at a few jewelry companies. If you'd like, I can recommend you."

Lynn's eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Susan, do you... think I'd hold the company back?"

She shook her head hard, as if I'd deeply wronged her. "I wouldn't! I interned for a long time. I have experience."

I hadn't expected her to twist my words like that, and I froze.

Perry took my hand and smiled as he tried to ease the tension.

"Lynn, you can work at the Clayton Group, but you'd have to start in an entry-level position. Would you be willing?"

Lynn's eyes lit up, and she nodded eagerly.

"Of course."

[Haha, look! The side character is turning green.]

[She's upset already? Wait until she finds out the male lead assigns our girl to his executive office staff and keeps her by his side every day. She'll lose her mind.]

[Serves her right for being so dramatic. Can we skip ahead? I can't wait to see her face when he dumps her.]

"You two talk. I have something to take care of at work, so I'm heading back to the office."

Perry kissed my forehead without a hint of hesitation.

Lynn's expression changed.

"Mr. Clayton, could I go with you? I can learn the way while I'm at it."

"Sure."

Perry turned back to me. "Honey, if you get bored, go shopping with Jenna. And be careful not to hurt yourself again."

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

Soon, I heard a car start outside.

[Our girl is sitting in the passenger seat! Are the leads already giving us cute moments together?]

[The male lead adjusted her seat just now. She blushed and sat perfectly still. She's adorable!]

[Who else loves a romance with an older guy? I'm already shipping them!]

I stood there for a long time, cold all over.

I didn't know how much time passed before I went upstairs and opened a door.

The comments said I'd be digging through dumpsters after the divorce?

As soon as the door opened, the comments exploded:

[Holy crap, an esports room? This setup is better than a professional team's.]

[State champion, national invitational MVP, best tactical player in the youth training tournament...]

[Wait! Wasn't the side character supposed to be a useless rich girl who couldn't do anything?]

I sat down at the computer and opened my streaming dashboard.

I had more than eight million followers and over ninety-nine unread private messages.

I once wanted to compete for a world championship, but my family went bankrupt when I was twenty-three.

My father jumped from the top of the company headquarters.

My mother had a heart attack as soon as she heard the news.

I lost everything in a single day.

After my parents' funerals, I went up to the roof too.

I was one step away from jumping when Perry grabbed me and held on tight. He cried harder than I did.

"Susan, you still have me. Please don't leave me. I'll take care of you for your parents.

"I promise I'll put a crown on your head again someday. You'll still be the brightest princess among the capital's elite."

Perry pulled me back from the brink of death.

I smiled and closed the social media app.My phone chimed. Lynn had sent three voice messages.I tapped the tranion button. "I hope you never have to depend on anyone again."I stared at the words. Something deep inside me slowly let go.It didn't hurt. I felt a quiet sense of relief.I put the agreement away, turned, and walked toward the terrace at the end of the hall.Shane stood there. He heard my footsteps and put out his cigarette."Want one?" He offered me the pack.I shook my head. "I've never smoked."He smiled, put the pack away, and pointed toward the sky."Do you know you said the same thing before a final back when we competed together?""Did I?""You did." He looked toward the distant neon lights. "You also told me that once you won, you'd stand at the highest point and make a vow for everyone to hear.""Then I want to make a different vow today.""I'm listening.""Tomorrow, I'll show everyone that I, Susan Warren, deserve my place in this world."The final arrived as scheduled.K&K and a powerhouse from Avelia fought through five games. "You won't find one."The car pulled away, and her figure grew smaller in the rearview mirror. The comments went wild:["You're not worth the effort it would take to ruin you." She's submitted her documents. Do you want me to...""No."I cut her off."If she wants to drag this out, let her."Jenna laughed."That's what I like about you. I booked a small place for a dinner to cheer you on before the tournament."I smiled and agreed.By the time I hung up, dusk had fallen outside the car window, and neon lights were coming on one by one.The world championship semifinal was brutal. Our opponent was the team from Valmere that had studied us inside out.In game one, they targeted Quinn across the

"Susan! Lynn's gold award was revoked!"The training room erupted.I straightened up and took Quinn's phone. The announcement stated:"The entry falsely credited its diamond-cutting work and raised questions about the diamond's provenance. Following a review, the gold award has been revoked, and the entrant is barred from the competition for three years."An assistant sent another news story to the group chat."A blogger previously found that the main stone in Lynn's necklace closely resembled the pink diamond auctioned at Sotheby's five years ago. “Clayton Group shares have fallen for three consecutive days, wiping out more than two billion dollars in market value."The training room fell silent for a moment.Quinn asked quietly, "Susan, this... doesn't have anything to do with you, does it?""If I could control public opinion, do you think it would have taken this long for her to be exposed?" I said, setting down the phone and turning back to my screen. The comments exploded:[This

I stayed there for four nights straight. One morning, sunlight slipped through the gap beneath the door. My vision went dark, and I nearly collapsed onto the computer.Shane broke the lock and came in.He carried a bowl of oatmeal and still looked damp from washing up. He reached me in a few quick steps."Susan Warren."He rarely called me by my full name.I didn't have the strength to speak, so I waved a hand at him.He pulled me up from the chair and placed his cool palm against the back of my neck."Your life is worth more than a championship.""But if we don't win, all these years will have been for nothing.""Who told you that?"His face darkened. For the first time, he was angry with me."The team and I are fighting for this title too. It's been our dream for years. You don't have to carry it alone.""I wasn't trying to. I was just—""Working yourself into the ground."He cut me off, then paused. His tone finally softened."You leave the analysis room before midnight tonight. No

Quinn sidled over with a sly grin."Susan, what did I tell you? The moment you showed up, our boss went from terrifying to a doting dad."“So what, did he steal your lunch?” I asked.Quinn blinked and quickly turned around. At some point, Shane had come back with two plates of pasta."I asked the cafeteria to make these." He set one plate in front of me and the other in front of Quinn.Forty minutes later, training was in full swing. My gentle side lasted only two days. On the third day, Quinn and the others started giving me nicknames.First came "Commander Warren," then "Your Majesty."The last one, "Miss Warren," made me want to smack whoever came up with it.It started at one in the morning, when I was still in the meeting room reviewing that afternoon's training footage frame by frame.Quinn couldn't go on. He slumped over his desk and groaned."Miss Warren, were you an owl in a past life? I can't even remember when I used Flash, and you remember how many minions I missed!"I di
