Chapter 4

Author: Little Footprints
[With the side character, the male lead acts like a father. With our girl, he can finally be a boy again.]

[But he and the side character aren't divorced yet. Isn't it a bit wrong for the female lead to get so close to him?]

At breakfast, Lynn tried to please me by bringing me a glass of milk.

Perry's expression stiffened.

"Lynn, Susan doesn't like milk."

Lynn stood there holding the glass, too embarrassed to move.

Perry took it from her.

"Sit down. I'll get Susan some juice."

"There's no need," I said.

I set down my knife and fork. "I'm going to be K&K's team manager. I won't be having breakfast at home anymore."

Perry froze, then frowned.

"Why do you suddenly want to work?"

"I'm trying to find myself again."

"But you've been away from esports for so long. Will you be able to adjust?"

I opened my mouth, then lost the energy to explain.

All those years, he never noticed that I practiced with K&K, streamed my games, and sometimes helped my followers analyze matches.

Perry's tone softened.

"Are you bored at home? If you really want to work, I can arrange a position for you at the company. How does that sound?"

"Perry, I lost my dream once already. I don't want to live with another regret."

Perry's face went pale.

"All right. Just don't push yourself too hard. You still have me."

Words like that used to make me blush. Now they only sounded bitterly ironic.

I picked up my bag and headed out. As I walked, I sent Jenna Hale a WhatsApp message.

"Help me prepare a divorce agreement. Divide the marital assets according to the law."

K&K's training facility was on the east side of the city.

From a distance, I spotted a familiar figure waiting at the entrance.

Shane wore a black team jersey with white lettering.

His hands rested in his pockets, and he looked stern and aloof.

"Welcome back." He took my bag and quietly led me inside.

[Wait, isn’t that the golden boy of the capital’s elite?]

[If I remember right, Shane Young and the side character grew up together. If her family hadn't gone bankrupt, their families might have arranged a marriage by now.]

[The capital’s golden boy and its princess? Why didn’t the author pair them up? I’d ship them so hard!]

I had no words.

I stole a glance at Shane. His lips were pressed together, as if he were waiting for a good show.

The moment I stepped inside K&K, there was a sudden pop.

Colorful confetti burst toward me.

Several young men shouted together:

"Welcome to K&K, Susan!"

[Holy crap, so many cute young guys! The side character hit the jackpot.]

[If all my coworkers looked like that, I'd happily work twenty-six hours of overtime.]

[I'm so jealous of the side character's social circle.]

Shane looked at them with the approval of a proud parent.

"That was thoughtful of you. Susan spent years practicing with you, after all."

A boy with a sweet face stuck out his lower lip.

"Susan, you have no idea how close we came to losing the last regional match. We only found out afterward that you'd analyzed tactics for the other team."

Another boy cut in. "We begged the boss to bring you to K&K, even if he had to get down on his knees."

"Wait, I just realized something. Susan's our own team manager now. Does that mean we can take it easy during training?"

Shane promptly tapped him on the head.

"Dream on. You'll train harder from now on. Don't ruin her reputation."

The training room filled with groans before he even finished speaking.

Shane acted as if he hadn't heard them and turned to me.

"I'll show you around."

I worked from nine that morning until eleven that night.

Match reviews, training plans, lineup simulations.

When I got home, Perry and Lynn were out. A few comments drifted past my eyes.

[Our girl is entering the national jewelry competition! The male lead took her to George Turner for inspiration. Her hands were shaking the first time she cut a diamond, haha.]

"I hope you never have to depend on anyone again."I stared at the words. Something deep inside me slowly let go.It didn't hurt. I felt a quiet sense of relief.I put the agreement away, turned, and walked toward the terrace at the end of the hall.Shane stood there. He heard my footsteps and put out his cigarette."Want one?" He offered me the pack.I shook my head. "I've never smoked."He smiled, put the pack away, and pointed toward the sky."Do you know you said the same thing before a final back when we competed together?""Did I?""You did." He looked toward the distant neon lights. "You also told me that once you won, you'd stand at the highest point and make a vow for everyone to hear.""Then I want to make a different vow today.""I'm listening.""Tomorrow, I'll show everyone that I, Susan Warren, deserve my place in this world."The final arrived as scheduled.K&K and a powerhouse from Avelia fought through five games. "Susan! Lynn's gold award was revoked!"The training room erupted.I straightened up and took Quinn's phone. The announcement stated:"The entry falsely credited its diamond-cutting work and raised questions about the diamond's provenance. Following a review, the gold award has been revoked, and the entrant is barred from the competition for three years."An assistant sent another news story to the group chat."A blogger previously found that the main stone in Lynn's necklace closely resembled the pink diamond auctioned at Sotheby's five years ago. “Clayton Group shares have fallen for three consecutive days, wiping out more than two billion dollars in market value."The training room fell silent for a moment.Quinn asked quietly, "Susan, this... doesn't have anything to do with you, does it?""If I could control public opinion, do you think it would have taken this long for her to be exposed?" I said, setting down the phone and turning back to my screen. The comments exploded:[This

Quinn sidled over with a sly grin."Susan, what did I tell you? The moment you showed up, our boss went from terrifying to a doting dad."“So what, did he steal your lunch?” I asked.Quinn blinked and quickly turned around. At some point, Shane had come back with two plates of pasta."I asked the cafeteria to make these." He set one plate in front of me and the other in front of Quinn.Forty minutes later, training was in full swing. My gentle side lasted only two days. On the third day, Quinn and the others started giving me nicknames.First came "Commander Warren," then "Your Majesty."The last one, "Miss Warren," made me want to smack whoever came up with it.It started at one in the morning, when I was still in the meeting room reviewing that afternoon's training footage frame by frame.Quinn couldn't go on. He slumped over his desk and groaned."Miss Warren, were you an owl in a past life? I can't even remember when I used Flash, and you remember how many minions I missed!"I di
