Chapter 6

Author: Little Footprints
Yes, I would have plenty more tournaments.

My new life was just beginning.

That was exactly why I wanted to start it with a win.

Times had changed, and the game had changed with them.

The competition was fiercer than I expected.

I watched the action shift across the big screen, my palms slick with sweat.

"They're relying on gimmicks."

Shane took my hand. His voice and gaze were steady.

"But you've been K&K's practice partner all these years.

"If you hadn't left esports, your skill and talent would have made you a legend no one could surpass."

My eyes stung.

"Then I have even more reason to win this tournament."

During the break before the final, the air in the team room felt frozen.

Quinn Hayes, who was usually so lively, couldn't stop bouncing his leg.

I tapped his knee with my tactics board.

"Keep that up and the chair will fall apart."

He looked miserable.

"Susan, they made the top four last season."

"So?"

Silence.

I slapped the tactics board onto the table.

"I watched their matches from previous years. They always contest the bottom-side objectives in the first game. So, we'll let them have those."

The players all turned to me.

"Let them?"

"They'll think we're trading objectives."

I circled the upper half of the map.

"At three minutes, we collapse on their two players with four of ours.

"At five minutes, we use the Herald to force a teamfight.

"They like to play by a formula."

I looked at each of them.

"So, we'll break their formula."

Ten minutes later, the match began.

Game one.

Four against two.

We crushed their bottom lane duo.

Game two.

We faked a recall and caught them in a counterattack.

Game three.

For the final fight, I told our support to give up the contest for vision. The whole team circled behind them.

The commentator's voice cracked.

"How are all five K&K players in that position?"

"Beautiful!"

"A team wipe!"

A little over twenty minutes later, an announcement rang through the arena.

"Congratulations to K&K, winners of the national qualifiers!"

For a moment, everything around me went quiet.

I instinctively took out my phone to share the news with Perry.

But the comments exploded across my vision first:

[Ahhh! Our girl won! Gold at the national design competition! She's amazing!]

[I'm going to cry. The male lead put the winning necklace around her neck himself. Does that make it a symbol of their love?]

[Wait! Doesn't the diamond on that necklace look pink? Didn't the male lead buy a pink diamond for twenty-six million dollars?]

My phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor.

Shane's voice tightened. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine." I smiled, but tears rolled down my cheeks.

Before Shane could say anything else, Quinn and the others rushed over, wild with excitement.

"Susan!"

Quinn moved to throw his arms around me, but Shane stepped between us.

The whole group instantly settled down.

Then they started talking over one another again.

"Susan, you're my new idol. I mean it."

"I told you that flank would work!"

"You said Susan had lost her mind!"

I picked up my phone, composed myself, and smiled at Shane.

"Boss, we won the championship. Shouldn't you treat us to a good meal?"

Shane still looked worried about me.

"Your choice."

I turned to Quinn and the others. "Send your suggestions to the group chat. We'll vote."

"Thank you, boss!"

They pulled out their phones and noisily debated what to eat.

I opened my phone too and sent Perry the divorce agreement.

"Perry, let's get a divorce."

I smiled and closed the social media app.My phone chimed. Lynn had sent three voice messages.I tapped the tranion button. "I hope you never have to depend on anyone again."I stared at the words. Something deep inside me slowly let go.It didn't hurt. I felt a quiet sense of relief.I put the agreement away, turned, and walked toward the terrace at the end of the hall.Shane stood there. He heard my footsteps and put out his cigarette."Want one?" He offered me the pack.I shook my head. "I've never smoked."He smiled, put the pack away, and pointed toward the sky."Do you know you said the same thing before a final back when we competed together?""Did I?""You did." He looked toward the distant neon lights. "You also told me that once you won, you'd stand at the highest point and make a vow for everyone to hear.""Then I want to make a different vow today.""I'm listening.""Tomorrow, I'll show everyone that I, Susan Warren, deserve my place in this world."The final arrived as scheduled.K&K and a powerhouse from Avelia fought through five games. "Susan! Lynn's gold award was revoked!"The training room erupted.I straightened up and took Quinn's phone. The announcement stated:"The entry falsely credited its diamond-cutting work and raised questions about the diamond's provenance. Following a review, the gold award has been revoked, and the entrant is barred from the competition for three years."An assistant sent another news story to the group chat."A blogger previously found that the main stone in Lynn's necklace closely resembled the pink diamond auctioned at Sotheby's five years ago. “Clayton Group shares have fallen for three consecutive days, wiping out more than two billion dollars in market value."The training room fell silent for a moment.Quinn asked quietly, "Susan, this... doesn't have anything to do with you, does it?""If I could control public opinion, do you think it would have taken this long for her to be exposed?" I said, setting down the phone and turning back to my screen. The comments exploded:[This

I stayed there for four nights straight. One morning, sunlight slipped through the gap beneath the door. My vision went dark, and I nearly collapsed onto the computer.Shane broke the lock and came in.He carried a bowl of oatmeal and still looked damp from washing up. Quinn sidled over with a sly grin."Susan, what did I tell you? The moment you showed up, our boss went from terrifying to a doting dad."“So what, did he steal your lunch?” I asked.Quinn blinked and quickly turned around. At some point, Shane had come back with two plates of pasta."I asked the cafeteria to make these." He set one plate in front of me and the other in front of Quinn.Forty minutes later, training was in full swing. My gentle side lasted only two days. On the third day, Quinn and the others started giving me nicknames.First came "Commander Warren," then "Your Majesty."The last one, "Miss Warren," made me want to smack whoever came up with it.It started at one in the morning, when I was still in the meeting room reviewing that afternoon's training footage frame by frame.Quinn couldn't go on. He slumped over his desk and groaned."Miss Warren, were you an owl in a past life? I can't even remember when I used Flash, and you remember how many minions I missed!"I di
