Chapter 1

Author: Redleaves
After I died, my phone kept ringing.

It was my father, Victor Moretti.

He kept calling, desperate to know if I'd made it onto the evacuation convoy.

Worried that he might find out what really happened, Matteo and the others finally picked up.

They lied and told him I'd been shot during the evacuation and urgently needed a blood transfusion from a relative with the same blood type.

"The FBI might already be watching this place. Don't bring anyone. Come to the old warehouse alone."

Afraid I would die before he got there, my father rushed over without even alerting his guards.

Matteo had already sealed every exit and hidden gunmen inside the warehouse.

The moment my father stepped through the door, gunfire erupted from every direction.

Dozens of bullets tore into his body.

He collapsed beside my body, still calling my name.

What was left of my soul lunged at Matteo, desperate to tear him apart with my own hands.

But my hands passed through him again and again. I couldn't do a thing.

Matteo stared coldly down at our bodies.

"Blame yourself for raising such a vicious daughter. Neither of you is worth Viola's life!"

But when they finally got a clear look at my father's face, they all went pale.

Someone cried out in shock.

"Viola, you're really the Chairman's daughter?"

My eyes snapped open.

I was back in the familiar underground council chamber, with everyone crowded around Viola.

She was showing them a chat thread on her phone.

"I've already worked everything out with my dad. Your names will go straight onto the priority convoy.

"No fingerprints at the church, no pat-downs, none of it."

A young member canceled his registration appointment on the spot.

"Who wants to line up at the church like a criminal? I'm going with Viola."

The others pulled out their phones too.

Matteo canceled his appointment and held the screen up to my face.

"That's what trust looks like."

As I watched the same scene play out again, I finally understood. I'd come back to life.

This time, my father was still alive.

And the evacuation list hadn't been sealed yet.

Viola noticed that I hadn't canceled my registration and deliberately raised her voice.

"Elena, you're just the adopted daughter of a low-level associate. Even if you manage to register, you'll end up in the worst safe house.

"For old times' sake, swear your loyalty to me, and I'll have my dad save you a spot."

She had someone bring over a chair and gestured for me to kneel in front of her.

Matteo scoffed.

"An outsider who didn't join the Family until she came of age? She should be grateful we're even willing to let her come with us."

Everyone watched me, waiting for me to bow my head.

I warned them one last time. "The Commission made it clear. Only people who register in person will make the evacuation list."

Viola's eyes reddened instantly.

"Who knows if the FBI has already taken over that church?

"What if everyone goes there to register and the FBI arrests them all? Are you going to take responsibility for that?"

Matteo drew his gun and pressed it against my forehead.

"Apologize to Viola.

"Tell everyone you don't know the first thing about the Commission's rules."

The muzzle pressed hard against my forehead.

Not one person in the chamber spoke up for me.

Someone even told me to hurry up and kneel before I lost my last chance to get on the convoy.

Matteo had worn the exact same expression when he pulled the trigger and killed me. He hadn't hesitated for a second.

I pushed the gun aside and walked toward the door.

"In seventy-two hours, you'll find out for yourselves who makes it onto that convoy."

The guards stormed the armory and pinned everyone to the ground. The Commission turned the livestream back on so the Five Families could watch them being disarmed. The same people who had been blaming me just minutes earlier immediately started begging."Miss Moretti, Viola tricked us, that's all!""Taking the armory was Matteo's idea! Please, spare us!"Some of them rushed to hand over their chat logs and claimed they had only been following the crowd.I holstered my gun."Nobody forced you to skip registration."And nobody forced you to threaten the entire Family by taking over an armory."The rules don't change just because you shout loud enough."Viola threw herself down beside Matteo."You were engaged to Elena! Go beg her!"Matteo shoved her away."If you hadn't pretended to be the Chairman's daughter, none of this would have happened to me!""You're the one who led everyone into the armory!" Viola shrieked."And you're the one who threatened to blow it up!"They started screamin

The livestream quickly reached all Five Families.Matteo had the ammunition crates pushed in front of the camera.Viola hid behind him, crying as she stared into the camera."Elena knew we were being lied to all along, and she kept quiet on purpose!"She used her status as the Chairman's daughter to sit back and watch all of us lose our protection!"If she had just helped us from the start, we never would have ended up here!"People who didn't know the truth began to question whether the Commission was letting me use my position for revenge.I could have left them to their fate, but I couldn't let them twist the truth.More importantly, the flare in Matteo's hand was less than seven feet from the ammunition crates. If the crates went off, everyone still at the old base handling the evacuation could be caught in the blast. My father was ready to send the strike team in by force.I stopped him.The crates were directly behind the main doors. If we stormed the armory from the front, Matte

Viola held her cheek, staring at me in shock."M-Miss... Moretti?"My father glanced at the badge on Tony's chest."Since when does a records clerk get to call himself Chairman of the Commission?"Then he pinned the strike team badge onto my shoulder."And she isn't the low-level associate's adopted daughter you keep calling her."She is Elena Moretti, heir to the Moretti family and a strike team officer who earned her position after three years of missions."The room fell completely silent.Security projected Tony's employment file and access records onto the wall. His job was to file records. He had no authority to make changes to the evacuation list.Even the Commission car he arrived in had been taken without permission, just to make himself look important. With the evidence right in front of everyone, Viola couldn't pretend any longer."You wanted to believe me!" she shrieked at the crowd."I said a few words, and you actually skipped registration. How is that all my fault?"Matte

Someone immediately looked up the license plate of the car outside."The car really is registered to the Commission!""And he's got a Commission badge!"That was enough to convince them that Tony really was the Chairman. No one bothered to read the job title on his badge. No one questioned why the real Chairman would show up in a car assigned to the archives department. After hearing so much praise, Tony forgot his fear. He even made a bold promise in front of everyone."I'll have the list reopened right away."Just wait. You'll all be leaving on the priority convoy."When someone asked about the assembly point, Tony mumbled that the location was classified for now.No one bothered to question such an obvious lie.Matteo immediately started sucking up to him."Chairman, Elena has been questioning you this whole time. Someone like her doesn't deserve the Commission's protection."Viola clung to Tony's arm and whined."Daddy, revoke her status. Unless she gets on her knees and begs me."

The crowd closed in on Viola again."Yes, call the Chairman! Hurry!""The list just got sealed. Maybe your father can still change it!"Viola gripped her phone, her face turning pale."Daddy's in charge of the evacuation. He doesn't have time to deal with something like this.""You think our lives don't matter?""Didn't you say the Chairman adores you? Prove it! Now!"Cornered, she had no choice but to raise the phone to her ear."Daddy, it's me. There's a little problem with the evacuation list..."She paused for a few seconds, pretending to listen."Okay. We'll wait for you to handle it."I snatched the phone from her hand and checked the screen. The call log was blank."You never even called him."Every face in the room changed.Someone who had defended her moments ago grabbed her wrist."The list is sealed, and you're still putting on a show?"Viola grabbed for the phone. "The phone's broken, that's all!""Then use mine."Security had already found Tony's number. When he answered,

The chamber went dead silent.A few seconds passed before someone stammered, "Only her? Aren't we on the priority list?"Don Bellini pulled up the system records and projected the sealed list onto the wall. They searched through every page. Not one of them found their name."That's impossible!""Viola said she had everything arranged!"Someone called the church immediately. The voice on the other end gave a single answer. "The list is sealed. No additions."The people who had been celebrating minutes ago started to panic."Then what do we do?""The FBI knows about the old base! Without the Family's protection, they'll come for us in no time!"Every head turned to Viola at once."Didn't you say your father added us to the list?""Then open the list! Now!"Viola took a step back, her eyes filling with tears right on cue."I don't know what happened. Daddy promised me..."Suddenly, she pointed at me."It has to be Elena!""She knew how important registration was, but she only cared about
