Chapter 3

Author: Nora Blythe
My head buzzed. Forgetting all about Rebecca, I stumbled out of the room.

I found my mother lying on the floor while a doctor performed CPR on her.

Fortunately, she had been found in time, and Mom came around.

The doctor kept warning me, "Your mother has high blood pressure. It could set off a heart attack or a stroke. She absolutely can't be put under any stress."

I nodded over and over.

As soon as she was fully awake, Mom grabbed my hand. "Son, I came the moment I heard. The Allens have gone too far!"

I helped her to Melissa's room. Melissa had already fallen asleep, and there was no sign of Rebecca.

Mom wiped away her tears, heartbroken. "Son, I don't care how powerful the Allen family is. Even if it costs me this old life of mine, I'm going to make sure you divorce her today!"

A lump rose in my throat.

In all the years I'd been married to Rebecca, I had thought about divorce.

But back then, Mom always told me to think of my child.

"Mom, I'll divorce her. You don't need to go."

But Mom wouldn't hear it. After asking the ward nurse to keep an eye on Melissa, I went with her to the Allen estate.

The moment we walked through the door, I saw my mother-in-law and Rebecca.

Rebecca's eyes met mine, but she quickly looked away.

I took a deep breath and laid the divorce agreement down in front of them. "I brought the divorce agreement. I want a divorce from Rebecca."

Rebecca stared fixedly at the document.

Mom raised her voice. "And we're taking Melissa with us. She'll never live with your family again."

Sasha's face flushed red with rage. "You think you can come and go from the Allen family as you please? If you want a divorce, go kneel in the chapel before our ancestors first!"

Without reading it, Rebecca tossed the document into the trash. "Mike, stop bringing your mom here to stir up trouble. Melissa can't be without me."

Mom's eyes turned red, and her whole body shook. "You were the one who wanted to marry my son. You went through so much to give birth to Melissa. How can you stop loving her now that she's here?

"Yes, your sister died, but what does that have to do with a little child?"

Rebecca's face went pale. Her hand, hanging at her side, trembled.

Before she could say a word, Sasha cut her off. "The Allen family has only one grandson.

"If it weren't for that wretched Melissa, Hailey would never have died. When it comes down to it, you owe our family.

"You want a divorce? Fine. But first, you'll get rid of every last bit of that bad luck clinging to you. I won't have it rubbing off on my family!"

Before I could react, bodyguards swarmed in from outside and began tearing at my mother's clothes.

I rushed forward to protect her. The next second, pain exploded across my cheek.

A fist slammed into my face and sent me crumpling to the floor.

Rebecca stood up and caught Sasha's arm. "Mom, this is going too far..."

Before she could finish, Sasha shot her a vicious glare. "So your sister just died for nothing? How could it be such a coincidence? She died right after you gave birth to that wretched girl!"

At the same moment, the sound of tearing fabric rang in my ears.

A huge basin of dog's blood was dumped over my mother's head and mine.

The rank stench made me gag again and again.

Mom couldn't catch her breath. Her eyes rolled back, and she fainted.

In a panic, I searched her for her pill bottle, my voice hoarse as I shouted at Rebecca, "My mom has a heart condition! She already collapsed once today!"

Even Sasha was afraid someone might actually die. She had the maids carry my mother off to a room, her face full of disgust. "Get her out of here. I won't have her dying in our house."

My whole body went limp. The foul dog's blood dripped from my hair.

Just then, Sebastian came back carrying his son.

Sasha and Rebecca both visibly relaxed.

"Did the transfusion go well? Melissa didn't make a fuss, did she?"

The blood in my veins seemed to freeze. My head snapped up.

A few days later, when Rebecca found me, I was having my lawyer gather evidence.I was going to make them pay back every bit of harm they had done to Melissa and my mom.If it hadn't been for the Allen family, my daughter and my mom would never have died.I wasn't surprised when Rebecca showed up.Looking at her red, swollen eyes, I knew she already regretted it."Mike, I didn't know Sebastian would be that deranged. If I'd known, I never would have agreed to let him do it. Melissa is my daughter. I...""You what? Now that she's dead, you're sorry? All these years, through everything Melissa and I went through, you never once stopped it. It's too late to be sorry now!"I let out a mocking laugh. "I've already handed the evidence over to the police. Your family is finished!"Rebecca was struck speechless."Don't bother explaining. Two people are dead because of you, and you're going to pay for it."The words hit Rebecca like a blow to the head. Her eyes went red, and tears wel

Melissa was her child, the daughter she had carried for nine months and brought into the world.Yes, she had resented her. She cried until she was dry heaving."Sebastian, I'm calling the police on you!"At that, Sasha immediately moved to shield Sebastian. "Rebecca, calm down...""How am I supposed to calm down?!"Rebecca's eyes were bloodshot as she glared at her mother. "You always favored Hailey, and you've always valued boys over girls. Rebecca immediately went to look up her daughter's death certificate. She refused to believe Melissa was dead. Her fingertips trembled as she paged through the records, until she saw the date on the death certificate. It was today. Her vision went black, and she crumpled to the floor."This can't be. Melissa's still so little... How could she die... How?"Rebecca murmured to herself, her eyes vacant. Suddenly, she turned to the doctor, her voice bordering on hysterical. "Are you all in on this together, lying to me?"The doctor looked puzzled. "Please calm down. Our hospital would never lie to anyone about something like this."Clutching the death certificate, Rebecca returned to the Allen estate in a daze. The moment she walked in, she turned on Sebastian. "How much blood did you take from Melissa?!"Rebecca and her mother had stayed home to keep Mike distracted while Sebastian took Melissa to have her blood drawn. She knew nothing about what had happened on Melissa's end.S

Rebecca stared blankly at the scene in front of her.The blood had dried across the floor, darkening to a deep red, and the air still reeked of it.Her throat bobbed. Unease welled up inside her.The first thing that flashed through her mind was the despair in Mike's eyes. She turned to a maid who was still trembling all over and frowned. "What were you all doing? How did the house end up like this? Whose blood is this..."She didn't even notice how badly her own voice was shaking. At the rebuke, the maid flinched. She still hadn't recovered from what had just happened. It wasn't until Rebecca spoke again that she snapped out of it."M-Miss Allen, Mrs. Booker had a sudden heart attack. When she collapsed, she hit her head on the marble counter behind her. All this blood, it's... it's all hers..."Rebecca's heart skipped a beat, and her eyes went wide. "That's impossible! Didn't I tell you to give her her medicine? How could she suddenly have a heart attack?"The maid was close

"What did you do to Melissa?!"Sebastian took a step back."Mike, don't blame Mom or Rebecca. They did it all for Tyler," Sebastian said.My mother-in-law finally spoke. "I just sent Sebastian to the hospital to arrange for Melissa to give Tyler blood."My lips trembled as my eyes met Rebecca's.Something flickered in her gaze, a trace of guilt. "It's just a little blood. It's not a big deal."A sharp pain stabbed through my heart. "Melissa just had surgery. How is she supposed to handle giving blood? Do you even think of her as your daughter?"Before she could answer, I rushed to the hospital without caring how filthy I was.The moment I arrived, I ran straight into Melissa's attending physician."Where's my daughter? Where is she?"The doctor's expression was grave. "Good, you're here. She's lost too much blood, and she was already running a fever. She's in critical condition. Please fill this out."As he spoke, he handed me a critical condition notice. The world spun aro
