Chapter 3

Author: Final Snowsong
Early the next morning, noise from downstairs woke me.

Still groggy, I dragged myself out of bed and looked over the railing. Wesley was already downstairs, dressed and ready to leave.

The moment he saw me, he waved. "It's graduation day. Why aren't you ready yet?"

The fever had left my head foggy, and I hadn't even checked the class group chat.

Before I could answer, Cassidy stepped out of her room. She was wearing the dress I had spent six months teaching myself to sew by hand.

I embroidered tiny rabbits and foxes across the fabric to match the outfit I made for Wesley. The clothes looked simple, but I lost count of how many times I had pricked my fingers making them.

Cassidy stood there nervously twisting the hem between her fingers.

"Daph, I really love it... Your mom said it looks good on me. But if you don't want me to wear it, I'll take it off and give it back right now."

She said she would take it off, but her grip on the skirt only tightened.

Wesley hurried upstairs and immediately stepped between us.

"Daph, you have plenty of nice dresses. Cass only wants to wear this one. Why are you making her take it off?"

Mom came out when she heard the commotion.

"Daph, do you have to be so petty? I told Cass she could wear it. It's one dress. Just pick another one."

My heart hurt so badly that I could barely speak.

"I never told her to take it off."

But no one cared enough to listen.

By the time I rushed through getting ready, they had already left for school without me.

At the ceremony, Wesley and Cassidy took the stage as the graduating class speakers.

Standing side by side in matching outfits, they looked every bit like a couple.

Wesley stayed close, carefully steadying Cassidy by the arm. He was worried she wasn't used to walking in heels.

The moment they finished their speeches, excited whispers broke out across the audience.

"Wesley and Cassidy look so good together! I heard they're even going to the same college. I'm obsessed."

"Same! They're both gorgeous and brilliant. How could anyone not ship them?"

"Did you see their matching outfits? That's the cutest soft launch ever!"

Then someone suddenly said, "Wait... I thought Wesley was dating his childhood friend."

The crowd went quiet. The classmates who knew the story glanced at me, their eyes full of sympathy.

I said nothing and glanced at the empty seats reserved for my family.

One of my friends leaned over. "Daphne, weren't your parents always so proud of you? They didn't come to your graduation?"

I looked toward my parents, who were sitting several rows behind Cassidy and Wesley, and shook my head with a bitter smile.

"No. They're not coming."

And I didn't need them to anymore.

After the ceremony, my guidance counselor called me into her office. She looked over my college application list and sighed.

"Your SAT score was exceptional. Why didn't you apply to Westhaven University? Oakdale University is an excellent school, too, but it's over a thousand miles away. I think you should give it some more thought."

The irony was that since our SAT scores had come out, Ms. Davis was the only person who had cared enough to ask about mine.

"I've already made my decision, Ms. Davis. Thank you."

Oakdale was more than a thousand miles from Westhaven.

And once I left, I never wanted to come back.

Wesley stood outside the academic building, looking far more haggard than before. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up."Daph! I've come looking for you so many times. I finally found you."His voice sounded strained, almost desperate. He reached for my hand, but I stepped back."What are you doing here? Aren't you tired of this?" I snapped. I had loved him for years, and I had never spoken to him like that before. He froze."What did you just say? Do you have any idea how much I've missed you? I kept waiting for you at Westhaven. Why did you choose Oakdale?"I checked the time. Class was about to start.I was done trying to spare his feelings."Because I didn't want to see you or Cassidy. I can't stand either of you. Is that clear enough?"I stepped around him and headed for the building. He rushed after me and grabbed me from behind."Daph, don't do this! There's nothing going on between Cassidy and me. You've got it all wrong. Please, just listen to me."I struggled

The certificate slipped from my hand.I stumbled backward, caught my foot on a rock, and fell hard.Mom and Dad rushed forward to help me. All the painful memories I almost managed to bury came flooding back as agony twisted through my chest."Don't touch me! Stay away from me!"Their hands froze in midair, hurt filling their eyes."Daph...""What's wrong? It's Mom."Tears streamed down my face as I sobbed. I forced myself to name every time they had ignored me or treated me as though I didn't matter."You stopped feeling like my mom a long time ago. You remember what everyone else likes, but you never remember anything about me. You never notice how hard I try. You just assume I'm the problem."I turned to Dad. He hadn't said a word, but tears were streaming down his face, too."And you've always left me behind. You already have Cassidy. Why did you have to come here and wreck the life I worked so hard to build?"Mom broke down and rushed forward, trying to pull me into her

The moment I stepped off the plane and turned on my phone, it nearly froze under the flood of more than a hundred messages.I also had missed calls from several different people.Mom had left me a string of messages on WhatsApp.[Daph, why are you being so difficult? You scored so well on the SAT. Why didn't you tell us? Where did you go? When are you going to stop making me worry?]Wesley had sent plenty of messages, too.[I can't believe you scored that high. This is great! We can go to Westhaven University together. Stop throwing a fit. You've worried your mom enough. Come home. We'll go take care of enrollment together in a few days.]I frowned as I read through them, then blocked their numbers and deleted every message. When I stepped outside the airport, Oakdale's breeze swept over me. For the first time, I had the courage to start over and pursue a future that belonged to me alone. As I left the terminal, I opened my map app and looked up the route to campus.A middle-a

Wesley's breath caught, and he lunged forward to snatch the phone. He stared at the score and confirmation details on the screen, checking them again and again. Then, he pulled out his own phone and compared the results. He looked at Mom, his lips parting, but no defense came.I really had scored that high, and he really had told them I needed to retake the SAT."Mrs. Campbell…"Mom cut him off with a wave and left. She kept calling me the entire drive home.Wesley crouched in a corner, sending me message after message.I was still on the plane and knew nothing about any of it.The moment Mom got home, she rushed to unlock the door. She shouted my name through the house, but no matter how many times she called, no one answered.Dad arrived right behind her. The same thought seemed to hit them both, and they raced upstairs. My room looked exactly as it always had; except the trash can was filled with discarded photos and shredded Polaroids.Mom knelt beside it and picked up t

With a clatter, Mom's phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor. She stood there in a daze.Even Dad was startled by her reaction. He picked up the phone and asked in disbelief, "Ms. Davis, are you sure there hasn't been some mistake? Cassidy scored a 1490. How could Daphne possibly have scored that much higher?"Now, Ms. Davis was even more baffled. How could any parents be so disconnected from their daughter's life that they were only now finding out her SAT score?Even worse, they didn't react with pride. They questioned whether it was true."Mr. Campbell, I'm absolutely certain. Daphne did exceptionally well. She scored a 1580."All the strength drained from Dad's body, and he sank into the nearest chair.Around them, relatives were still chatting, eating, and congratulating Cassidy and Wesley.Mom and Dad could feel people glancing their way, but all the color had drained from their faces. They forced smiles, though the strain was impossible to hide.A little later, t

After the graduation ceremony ended, everyone began heading home.It wasn't until Cassidy reminded them that Mom, Dad, and Wesley finally remembered me."Daph, why did you wander off again?"I didn't answer. I simply got into the car and took a seat in the very back.No one paid me any attention. Once everyone was in the car, they launched into an excited discussion about colleges and majors."Cass, we'll feel much better knowing you're going to Westhaven University with Wesley. He can look out for you there."Cassidy blushed and nodded.Mom and Dad disagreed over what she should major in and began arguing about it. In the end, they decided to let Cassidy choose for herself."Cass is smart and knows what she wants. She's nothing like Daph. We never have to worry about her."I didn't say a word.We were almost home before Mom finally noticed me sitting in the back and asked, "Daph, what are your plans?"Before I could answer, Wesley answered for me."Daph didn't do well on t
