Chapter 4

Author: Final Snowsong
After the graduation ceremony ended, everyone began heading home.

It wasn't until Cassidy reminded them that Mom, Dad, and Wesley finally remembered me.

"Daph, why did you wander off again?"

I didn't answer. I simply got into the car and took a seat in the very back.

No one paid me any attention. Once everyone was in the car, they launched into an excited discussion about colleges and majors.

"Cass, we'll feel much better knowing you're going to Westhaven University with Wesley. He can look out for you there."

Cassidy blushed and nodded.

Mom and Dad disagreed over what she should major in and began arguing about it. In the end, they decided to let Cassidy choose for herself.

"Cass is smart and knows what she wants. She's nothing like Daph. We never have to worry about her."

I didn't say a word.

We were almost home before Mom finally noticed me sitting in the back and asked, "Daph, what are your plans?"

Before I could answer, Wesley answered for me.

"Daph didn't do well on the SAT. She's going to retake it and apply again next year. It's fine. Cass and I will go ahead to Westhaven University and learn the ropes. Daph can join us next fall."

Mom and Dad exchanged a look and sighed.

"Daph, I wish you were half as easy to deal with as Cass."

I blinked, and a tear fell onto my phone. The 1580 on the screen blurred beneath it.

They had never even asked about my score.

One sentence from Wesley was all it took for them to decide I had failed and needed another year.

Over the next few days, I sold the jewelry my parents had given me over the years. I also sold every birthday and holiday gift Wesley had ever given me.

Combined with the money I had saved, it came to a decent amount. It was enough to cover my tuition and my first few months of living expenses.

Once everything was settled, I tucked my acceptance letter from Oakdale University safely away and closed my suitcase.

When I wheeled it out of my room, the house was empty.

Then Wesley called.

"I found an SAT prep program for you. After the party today, I'll take you to get signed up."

I stared at the family portrait downstairs. "What party?"

"Mine and Cass's college send-off, obviously."

The whole family had gone, and no one had even told me.

It was just like the family group chat. Everyone was included except me.

"Our parents talked it over. Since Cass and I are both going to Westhaven University, they figured we might as well celebrate together."

"Okay."

I had been disappointed too many times to feel anything anymore, so I said nothing.

Wesley must have heard something in my silence, because his voice softened.

"We only left you out because we didn't want you to feel bad. You still have to retake the SAT. When you get into college next year, we'll throw you an even bigger party."

A sharp ache pierced my chest, leaving bitterness behind.

"Wesley, the truth is, I…"

"Wesley, it's about to start. What are you doing?"

I was about to tell him everything and end our relationship once and for all when Cassidy interrupted me.

Wesley hung up in a hurry without hearing the rest of what I had to say.

I took one last look around the home where I had grown up, then wheeled my suitcase out the door and headed for the airport.

-

At the party, Mom and Dad watched Cassidy and Wesley from across the room, their hearts swelling with pride.

Dad suddenly said, "You know, Cass and Wesley actually make a pretty good match."

Mom sat up straight and smacked him hard. "What are you talking about? You know Daph has always loved Wesley."

At the mention of me, they both felt a strange emptiness settle in their chests.

"I wonder which SAT prep program Daph plans to attend."

Just then, Mom's phone rang. It was my guidance counselor.

"Mrs. Campbell, this is Ms. Davis."

Mom put the call on speaker and answered with a smile.

Ms. Davis continued, "Where are you holding Daphne's college send-off? I'd love to come by and congratulate her."

Mom's smile froze, and a flicker of embarrassment crossed her face.

"I'm afraid there's been some misunderstanding, Ms. Davis. Daphne didn't do well on the SAT, so she'll be retaking it and applying to college again next year."

Ms. Davis fell silent for a moment before asking in confusion, "Are you serious? Daphne scored a 1580 and was accepted to Oakdale University. Why would she retake the SAT?"

Wesley stood outside the academic building, looking far more haggard than before. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up."Daph! I've come looking for you so many times. I finally found you."His voice sounded strained, almost desperate. He reached for my hand, but I stepped back."What are you doing here? Aren't you tired of this?" I snapped. I had loved him for years, and I had never spoken to him like that before. He froze."What did you just say? Do you have any idea how much I've missed you? I kept waiting for you at Westhaven. Why did you choose Oakdale?"I checked the time. Class was about to start.I was done trying to spare his feelings."Because I didn't want to see you or Cassidy. I can't stand either of you. Is that clear enough?"I stepped around him and headed for the building. He rushed after me and grabbed me from behind."Daph, don't do this! There's nothing going on between Cassidy and me. You've got it all wrong. Please, just listen to me."I struggled

The certificate slipped from my hand.I stumbled backward, caught my foot on a rock, and fell hard.Mom and Dad rushed forward to help me. All the painful memories I almost managed to bury came flooding back as agony twisted through my chest."Don't touch me! Stay away from me!"Their hands froze in midair, hurt filling their eyes."Daph...""What's wrong? It's Mom."Tears streamed down my face as I sobbed. I forced myself to name every time they had ignored me or treated me as though I didn't matter."You stopped feeling like my mom a long time ago. You remember what everyone else likes, but you never remember anything about me. You never notice how hard I try. You just assume I'm the problem."I turned to Dad. He hadn't said a word, but tears were streaming down his face, too."And you've always left me behind. You already have Cassidy. Why did you have to come here and wreck the life I worked so hard to build?"Mom broke down and rushed forward, trying to pull me into her

The moment I stepped off the plane and turned on my phone, it nearly froze under the flood of more than a hundred messages.I also had missed calls from several different people.Mom had left me a string of messages on WhatsApp.[Daph, why are you being so difficult? You scored so well on the SAT. Why didn't you tell us? Where did you go? When are you going to stop making me worry?]Wesley had sent plenty of messages, too.[I can't believe you scored that high. This is great! We can go to Westhaven University together. Stop throwing a fit. You've worried your mom enough. Come home. We'll go take care of enrollment together in a few days.]I frowned as I read through them, then blocked their numbers and deleted every message. When I stepped outside the airport, Oakdale's breeze swept over me. For the first time, I had the courage to start over and pursue a future that belonged to me alone. As I left the terminal, I opened my map app and looked up the route to campus.A middle-a

Wesley's breath caught, and he lunged forward to snatch the phone. He stared at the score and confirmation details on the screen, checking them again and again. Then, he pulled out his own phone and compared the results. He looked at Mom, his lips parting, but no defense came.I really had scored that high, and he really had told them I needed to retake the SAT."Mrs. Campbell…"Mom cut him off with a wave and left. She kept calling me the entire drive home.Wesley crouched in a corner, sending me message after message.I was still on the plane and knew nothing about any of it.The moment Mom got home, she rushed to unlock the door. She shouted my name through the house, but no matter how many times she called, no one answered.Dad arrived right behind her. The same thought seemed to hit them both, and they raced upstairs. My room looked exactly as it always had; except the trash can was filled with discarded photos and shredded Polaroids.Mom knelt beside it and picked up t

With a clatter, Mom's phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor. She stood there in a daze.Even Dad was startled by her reaction. He picked up the phone and asked in disbelief, "Ms. Davis, are you sure there hasn't been some mistake? Cassidy scored a 1490. How could Daphne possibly have scored that much higher?"Now, Ms. Davis was even more baffled. How could any parents be so disconnected from their daughter's life that they were only now finding out her SAT score?Even worse, they didn't react with pride. They questioned whether it was true."Mr. Campbell, I'm absolutely certain. Daphne did exceptionally well. She scored a 1580."All the strength drained from Dad's body, and he sank into the nearest chair.Around them, relatives were still chatting, eating, and congratulating Cassidy and Wesley.Mom and Dad could feel people glancing their way, but all the color had drained from their faces. They forced smiles, though the strain was impossible to hide.A little later, t
