Chapter 2

Penulis: Yulansa
My brother chimed in, and my sister and Daisy dissolved into giggles.

Arthur rested a hand on Daisy's shoulder, his eyes shining with unmistakable affection.

"Text me if anything happens, okay, babe? I'll keep an eye on my phone."

Then he added, "Don't be scared. I'll come keep you company later."

Arthur leaned toward the screen and pretended to pinch my cheek, smiling fondly.

As I watched them laughing, I asked before I could stop myself.

"If something really happened to me, would you regret it?"

The call went so silent that it felt as if I were the only person left in the world.

Then I heard all four of them snort, and they burst into helpless laughter.

Daisy laughed so hard she cried. "Irene, what could possibly happen? You're so smart, I'm sure you'll handle it!"

They were doubled over laughing.

But my heart sank, inch by inch, until it went cold.

Every burst of laughter cut deeper than the last.

On the screen, they were all crowded around Daisy. The light stretched their four shadows out until they blended together, impossible to pull apart.

Only I was alone, standing in the shadows like an outsider.

I hung up and walked over to my bed.

A few shirtless guys next door were playing cards. When I'd passed their door earlier, their eyes had dragged over me so openly that my skin crawled.

I lay down fully dressed.

I slipped a box cutter under my pillow.

At the time, it was pure instinct.

But I never imagined that box cutter would actually save my life.

The walls in that motel were paper-thin. Footsteps in the hall mixed with the snoring next door.

Days of rehearsals and songwriting had exhausted me. I fought to keep my eyes open, but eventually, I drifted off.

I had no idea how long I'd been asleep when the bed suddenly jolted.

I had always been a light sleeper, so I woke instantly.

In the dark, the reek of smoke and alcohol hit me in the face.

One of the card players had somehow slipped inside and was going through my backpack.

"Don't scream!"

A cold hand clamped hard over my mouth. His other hand closed around my throat.

Terror and revulsion shattered the last of my self-control.

I yanked the box cutter from beneath my pillow and slashed his arm with it!

"Aaagh!"

He screamed and stumbled back, clutching his arm as blood sprayed.

I rolled off the bed, left my shoes behind, and ran from the room, screaming at the top of my lungs. "Help! Call the police! Help!"

My voice tore through the silence of the night.

The motel owner and a few other guests rushed in, turned on the lights, and called the police.

They pinned the man to the floor as he kept cursing.

Arthur, who had promised to keep checking his phone and come over later, was nowhere to be found.

A female officer saw how hard I was shaking. She took off her jacket, draped it around my shoulders, and spoke to me softly.

I forced myself to calm down, took out my phone, and called all four of them.

Straight to voicemail.

Every single call went straight to voicemail.

In the end, the officers called the hotel front desk more than ten times before someone finally answered. Then a staff member went to knock on their doors.

Half an hour later, the four of them showed up in the lobby of the police station, half-dressed and looking annoyed.

When they saw me, my hair a mess and my neck covered in red marks, they froze for a second.

Then Anthony walked over, looking relieved, and patted my shoulder.

"You're okay. That's what matters. Come on, let's get you something good to eat. It'll calm your nerves."

I looked up at him, my lips trembling.

He reached down to help me up, and I slapped his hand away.

"Do you even know that I almost..."

Anthony's smile faded, but he still didn't seem to understand how serious this was.

He scratched the back of his head and tried to smooth things over, clearly unsure what else to do.

"I know you've been through a lot. Let's go find somewhere to get some rest. We don't need to hang around here."

So to him, as long as I wasn't dead, nothing had really happened.

My terror, my humiliation, all of it was reduced to "you've been through a lot."

When I saw Daisy again, I was out with friends, and we were all carrying outdoor gear. She was screaming and pounding on the man beside her. "Let go of me!""Daisy, who are you trying to fool with that innocent act? We're all adults. You came out with us empty-handed and expected everything for free. Did you really think there wouldn't be a price?"She truly didn't understand. She thought that as long as she looked pitiful enough, everyone would take care of everything for her.No matter where she went, she was used to being the center of attention, with people clearing every obstacle from her path. But she'd forgotten that every favor comes with strings attached.I stepped forward, and my friends closed ranks behind me."Let her go."Daisy's hair was a mess, and there were bruises on her neck. When she saw me, humiliation flashed across her face, followed by bitter jealousy. "Irene, you're loving this, aren't you? Anthony and Arthur won't even talk to me because of you. Now you're the

As luck would have it, Owen lived in the same city as me.I hadn't posted about the trip home, but he had.So when Anthony and the others showed up at the airport to meet me, I wasn't surprised. The moment Arthur saw me, his eyes turned red.Daisy, who was always with them, was nowhere to be seen.Susan stood beside them, her expression serious. "I'm sorry," she said.I gave her a brief nod, then started to walk right past them.Arthur stood frozen, watching Owen and me walk farther and farther away.He hurried after us and grabbed my wrist. Up close, I could see that he'd lost a lot of weight. He had always been slim, but now he was so thin he barely looked like himself. All his old confidence was gone."Irene, please don't ignore me. Just let me explain, okay..."I raised a hand to stop him. "Let's find somewhere to talk. I'm not having this conversation in the middle of the airport."We found a nearby café and sat down. Before they could decide what to order, Owen had already ordere

Daisy's eyes widened, then filled with tears.Usually, seeing her cry was enough to win them over. This time, no one was in the mood.Susan pressed a hand to her forehead and forced herself to calm down. "Let's deal with what's in front of us first. We need to book a hotel, get a cab, and find somewhere to eat."Luckily, it wasn't peak tourist season, so they had no trouble finding a room. But it was a complete rip-off. The room was cramped and outdated, and the air conditioner didn't work. After only one day there, Susan was already on the verge of a breakdown. She cried until her carefully applied makeup ran. She'd never looked so disheveled."It was never like this before."At dinner, Daisy insisted on going to an Instagram-famous restaurant so she could post about it.At first, the others tried to reason with her. "We don't have a reservation. Let's just find somewhere else to eat tonight."But Daisy pouted as usual. "I don't care. A trip doesn't count if you don't post it on Insta

Daisy looked hurt, her eyes turning red, but Anthony and Susan weren't in the mood to comfort her.For the first time, Irene's absence left a hole none of them knew how to fill.Susan opened her mouth to ask for water out of habit, then caught herself. Irene used to buy it without a word and hand each of them a bottle.Anthony needed to charge his gear, but after tearing through his backpack, he couldn't find a power bank. Then he remembered that Irene always carried a heavy bag full of chargers and handed one to anyone who needed it.People bustled around them in the arrivals hall, talking and laughing, but the silence among them felt frozen solid.Even Daisy's usual sulking, which they'd once indulged so easily, now grated on everyone's nerves.Maybe the heat was getting to him, but Anthony realized he actually missed the little sister he'd always dismissed as plain. She never made a fuss or fought for anything. She simply handled everything quietly from the sidelines. He pictured he

But that wasn't true.He really did like Irene. He just didn't have the courage to admit it.Sometimes, he even caught himself resenting Irene for not shining a little brighter. After a while, Arthur almost believed his own lie.He clasped his hands and prayed over and over that he'd see Irene the moment he got off the plane.* * *I had no idea about any of that.By then, I had already arrived at a recording studio in another city. What I didn't expect was to run into someone I knew."You?"The man smiling warmly at me was the stagehand who'd stood up for me at the police station."Hi, I'm Owen Mercer." He held out his hand, then added with an embarrassed smile, "I'm sorry about the other night. I shouldn't have just stood there recording instead of stepping in right away. I was about to call for help, but I couldn't tell whether the two of you were working together, so I thought I should get some proof first..."He seemed like a cautious guy."No, I'm the one who should thank you. To Arthur, the whole world went silent. There was a roar in his ears, and his mind went blank."What do you mean, Irene's gone?"Arthur gripped the phone, his voice shrill with terror."We wanted her to clean up the streamers by the door, but her room was empty. Her clothes, her sheet music... everything was gone. We checked her drawers. Her ID, all her pictures from growing up... all gone."Susan took the phone, sounding as impatient as ever. "Okay, so she's throwing a tantrum and running away again. She's a grown woman, and she's still pulling this. We're about to board. I have to go."Susan was about to hang up.Richard and Elaine were stunned. They hadn't expected their own daughter to be so cold.Elaine said in disbelief, "She's your sister."Susan was holding Daisy's hand. Her voice was flat. "My sister? Haven't you said over and over that she's too plain and that you wish you'd never had her?"Richard and Elaine looked at each other, speechless. Had they really said such cruel t
