Chapter 3

Author: Yulansa
My blood seemed to stop flowing. I sat rigid on the bench, staring at him coldly.

The officer couldn't take any more. She slammed her hand on the desk and pointed at Anthony.

"What kind of brother are you? Your sister was nearly strangled to death, and you're standing here brushing it off?!"

The motel owner quickly told them what had happened. Arthur's confusion turned to anger.

He clenched his fists and lunged forward as if he wanted to hit the man.

But Daisy grabbed him from behind and held on tight. "Arthur, don't do anything crazy. What if it messes up the band's show?"

I dug my nails into my palms. The pain was the only thing keeping me together.

Daisy glanced at me. When she spoke, her voice was soft but pointed.

"Funny coincidence, isn't it? Irene asks if we'd regret it, and that same night, something happens?"

Arthur stopped dead.

Every eye in the room turned to me, full of suspicion.

The man pinned to the floor seemed to think he'd found a lifeline. He shouted over everyone else.

"She came on to me and said she wanted some excitement! Then the second I touched her, she demanded money. When I refused, she stabbed me!"

Then he yelled, "The bitch set me up! I'm the victim here!"

Daisy put on her understanding act again. "Irene's always wanted your attention. When people are desperate, they do irrational things. Don't be too hard on her."

Arthur's hands were shaking.

He slowly turned toward me, shock and doubt filling his eyes.

When he finally spoke, his voice was much quieter. "Irene, what really happened?"

He looked at me as if he were begging me to deny it so he could believe me.

But that one moment of doubt was enough to show me everything.

Tears streamed down my face. My voice shook so badly I could barely speak. "Arthur, you'd rather believe a drunk who broke into my room to rob me than believe me?"

He glanced at the people murmuring around us and the man still yelling on the floor. Then, without a word, he looked away from me.

That silence was crueler than any accusation.

Daisy stepped forward, playing the impartial judge. "He doesn't look like a bad guy. And Irene wasn't actually hurt. Why don't we just let it go and settle this privately? Making a big deal of it would be bad for the band."

Just like that, she casually wrote off a violent assault as a "misunderstanding."

"Doesn't look like a bad guy." Those words hit me like a slap across the face.

A stagehand lugging an equipment case stepped forward.

"I didn't want to get involved, but I can't just stand here and watch this..."

He held up his phone and showed everyone a video.

While testing equipment in a corner, he'd caught the man on video. It clearly showed him sneaking up and prying open my door.

Anthony stared at me, stunned, and a flicker of guilt crossed his face.

The officer remained stone-faced as she ordered her colleagues to take the attacker into custody.

I signed the last form and stood up. My legs were so weak I almost fell.

Arthur reached out to steady me. "Irene..."

The officer pushed his hand away. "Please don't touch her. Let her calm down first."

I turned away too, refusing to look at him again. Arthur's eyes went red. "Irene, are you mad at me?"

Daisy stepped in right on cue. "Okay, okay. Irene, you must be so shaken up. Why don't you come back to the hotel tonight and swap rooms with me?"

"No way!"

Once again, all three of them said it at once.

Arthur looked worried sick, but it was Daisy he was worried about. "Irene almost got hurt there. You're so pretty. You'd be walking right into the lion's den."

"Yeah, you can't go to a place like that alone. We'd be worried sick." Anthony stopped short.

Then he seemed to remember that I'd just come from that exact place.

"You shouldn't go back there either. It's too sketchy."

To Daisy, he'd said, "We'd be worried sick," his voice soft with affection, as if he couldn't bear the thought.

To me, he'd said, "You shouldn't go back there either," like he was warning a subordinate who kept making extra work for him.

I said, "Okay," and nothing more. Then I turned and walked away.

Some differences sound petty when you say them out loud, but swallowing them hurts.

  • They Chose Her, I Left the Band   Chapter 11

When I saw Daisy again, I was out with friends, and we were all carrying outdoor gear. She was screaming and pounding on the man beside her. "Let go of me!""Daisy, who are you trying to fool with that innocent act? We're all adults. You came out with us empty-handed and expected everything for free. Did you really think there wouldn't be a price?"She truly didn't understand. She thought that as long as she looked pitiful enough, everyone would take care of everything for her.No matter where she went, she was used to being the center of attention, with people clearing every obstacle from her path. But she'd forgotten that every favor comes with strings attached.I stepped forward, and my friends closed ranks behind me."Let her go."Daisy's hair was a mess, and there were bruises on her neck. When she saw me, humiliation flashed across her face, followed by bitter jealousy. "Irene, you're loving this, aren't you? Anthony and Arthur won't even talk to me because of you. Now you're the

As luck would have it, Owen lived in the same city as me.I hadn't posted about the trip home, but he had.So when Anthony and the others showed up at the airport to meet me, I wasn't surprised. The moment Arthur saw me, his eyes turned red.Daisy, who was always with them, was nowhere to be seen.Susan stood beside them, her expression serious. "I'm sorry," she said.I gave her a brief nod, then started to walk right past them.Arthur stood frozen, watching Owen and me walk farther and farther away.He hurried after us and grabbed my wrist. Up close, I could see that he'd lost a lot of weight. He had always been slim, but now he was so thin he barely looked like himself. All his old confidence was gone."Irene, please don't ignore me. Just let me explain, okay..."I raised a hand to stop him. "Let's find somewhere to talk. I'm not having this conversation in the middle of the airport."We found a nearby café and sat down. Before they could decide what to order, Owen had already ordere

Daisy's eyes widened, then filled with tears.Usually, seeing her cry was enough to win them over. This time, no one was in the mood.Susan pressed a hand to her forehead and forced herself to calm down. "Let's deal with what's in front of us first. We need to book a hotel, get a cab, and find somewhere to eat."Luckily, it wasn't peak tourist season, so they had no trouble finding a room. But it was a complete rip-off. The room was cramped and outdated, and the air conditioner didn't work. After only one day there, Susan was already on the verge of a breakdown. She cried until her carefully applied makeup ran. She'd never looked so disheveled."It was never like this before."At dinner, Daisy insisted on going to an Instagram-famous restaurant so she could post about it.At first, the others tried to reason with her. "We don't have a reservation. Let's just find somewhere else to eat tonight."But Daisy pouted as usual. "I don't care. A trip doesn't count if you don't post it on Insta

Daisy looked hurt, her eyes turning red, but Anthony and Susan weren't in the mood to comfort her.For the first time, Irene's absence left a hole none of them knew how to fill.Susan opened her mouth to ask for water out of habit, then caught herself. Irene used to buy it without a word and hand each of them a bottle.Anthony needed to charge his gear, but after tearing through his backpack, he couldn't find a power bank. Then he remembered that Irene always carried a heavy bag full of chargers and handed one to anyone who needed it.People bustled around them in the arrivals hall, talking and laughing, but the silence among them felt frozen solid.Even Daisy's usual sulking, which they'd once indulged so easily, now grated on everyone's nerves.Maybe the heat was getting to him, but Anthony realized he actually missed the little sister he'd always dismissed as plain. She never made a fuss or fought for anything. She simply handled everything quietly from the sidelines. He pictured he

But that wasn't true.He really did like Irene. He just didn't have the courage to admit it.Sometimes, he even caught himself resenting Irene for not shining a little brighter. After a while, Arthur almost believed his own lie.He clasped his hands and prayed over and over that he'd see Irene the moment he got off the plane.* * *I had no idea about any of that.By then, I had already arrived at a recording studio in another city. What I didn't expect was to run into someone I knew."You?"The man smiling warmly at me was the stagehand who'd stood up for me at the police station."Hi, I'm Owen Mercer." He held out his hand, then added with an embarrassed smile, "I'm sorry about the other night. I shouldn't have just stood there recording instead of stepping in right away. I was about to call for help, but I couldn't tell whether the two of you were working together, so I thought I should get some proof first..."He seemed like a cautious guy."No, I'm the one who should thank you. To Arthur, the whole world went silent. There was a roar in his ears, and his mind went blank."What do you mean, Irene's gone?"Arthur gripped the phone, his voice shrill with terror."We wanted her to clean up the streamers by the door, but her room was empty. Her clothes, her sheet music... everything was gone. We checked her drawers. Her ID, all her pictures from growing up... all gone."Susan took the phone, sounding as impatient as ever. "Okay, so she's throwing a tantrum and running away again. She's a grown woman, and she's still pulling this. We're about to board. I have to go."Susan was about to hang up.Richard and Elaine were stunned. They hadn't expected their own daughter to be so cold.Elaine said in disbelief, "She's your sister."Susan was holding Daisy's hand. Her voice was flat. "My sister? Haven't you said over and over that she's too plain and that you wish you'd never had her?"Richard and Elaine looked at each other, speechless. Had they really said such cruel t
