Chapter 4

Author: Yulansa
Anthony had spent his whole life at the center of attention. No one had ever brushed him off like that. He jabbed a finger at my back and shouted, "What's with her attitude?"

The stagehand who had spoken up scoffed. "What did you expect? Did any of you even ask about the cut on her hand? She was so terrified that she ran out without a jacket. Did any of you care that she might be freezing?"

Only when he pointed it out did they notice my thin stage clothes beneath the jacket the officer had lent me. The skin between my thumb and forefinger had split open and was oozing blood. A drummer's hands are everything.

The stagehand shot a sideways glance at Daisy, whom they'd bundled up from head to toe so she wouldn't catch a chill.

"Real interesting. You treat trash like treasure and your own family like dirt."

Anthony was so furious that he lunged at the stagehand, but Arthur held him back.

Arthur ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "Enough! Knock it off! We're going back!"

Arthur felt restless, though he couldn't explain why. The way Irene had walked away without looking back sent a stab of panic through him.

It felt like something was slipping completely out of his control.

But he quickly pushed the feeling down.

After all, Irene was crazy about him. She couldn't leave the band. He would sweet-talk her tomorrow, and everything would be fine.

By the time I finished giving my statement at the station, the sun was up.

Exhausted, I trudged outside alone.

The four of them were waiting by the door.

Daisy got up the moment she saw me and took my hand, her voice soft. "Irene must be so shaken up. Let's get something to eat. My treat, to make it up to everyone."

Her smile was sweet and gracious, the practiced smile of a peacemaker smoothing everything over.

It was always like this.

They would ignore me without a second thought, then Daisy would swoop in to play the good guy and make me look like an immature burden.

Anthony ruffled her hair, clearly grateful. "You're the only one with any sense."

Arthur hesitated, his gaze lingering on me.

His lips parted as though he might finally ask whether I was hurt or say, "You had a rough night too."

Just then, Daisy tugged on his sleeve and tilted her face up with a smile. "Come on, come on. I know a café nearby with amazing coffee."

Arthur swallowed whatever he had been about to say. In the end, he just patted my shoulder and said flatly, "Let's go. Don't just stand there."

Whatever concern had almost surfaced never made it into words.

The four of them walked ahead, chatting excitedly about what to eat.

No one noticed that I had fallen far behind.

Daisy insisted on trying a trendy new sushi place.

As always, they took a four-top and had the server squeeze a fifth chair in at the end for me, half in the aisle.

Daisy blinked her big, innocent eyes. "Arthur is Irene's boyfriend. Shouldn't they sit together?"

"No way!"

The three of them answered in unison again.

"The aisle is where they bring the food out. It's dangerous. What if you get burned? You need your hands to play."

After Arthur said that, Susan pointed at me, half joking. "Irene's different. Look how fast she moves when she's drumming. If anything happens, she'll dodge it. No problem."

She said it breezily, like she was just trying to lighten the mood. She even winked at me.

The others laughed along, each quiet chuckle pricking me like a needle.

I put down my chopsticks, my voice flat and cold. "That's not funny."

Susan's smile froze. Then she muttered, "You're no fun. You can't even take a joke."

I pushed my bowl away and stood to leave as they stared at me.

Just then, a server came by with a tray of miso soup.

Startled when I stood up so abruptly, the server jerked aside and the tray tipped.

"Ah!"

Daisy let out a bloodcurdling scream and collapsed onto the booth seat, clutching the back of her hand.

Only a few drops of hot soup had actually splashed onto the back of her hand. They hadn't even left a red mark.

Daisy's eyes instantly filled with tears, but she bit her lip and said nothing.

She simply tugged on Arthur's sleeve, shook her head, and spoke in a tiny voice.

"It's okay, it's okay. It's not Irene's fault. I'm sure she didn't mean to burn my hand..."

The more gracious she acted, the darker Arthur's expression grew.

He shoved me so hard that I fell onto the greasy floor, my palm scraping across shards of broken china.

"Irene, I know you're jealous of Daisy, but this is just cruel!"

My brother joined in. "You're vicious! If Daisy can't play the keyboard after this, I'll break your legs!"

I sat on the floor, staring at the bloody cuts the broken china had left across my palm.

I was a drummer.

My palm was bleeding, and my own brother had just threatened to break my legs.

Arthur scooped Daisy up and rushed out.

The others ran after him, talking over one another about getting her to the hospital and buying the best burn cream.

They left me alone in the mess they had made, with the entire restaurant staring at me like I was a clown.

The server beside me looked baffled. "Are they crazy? It was only... a few drops. Is that really such a big deal? You're the one bleeding on the floor..."

Right. Is it really such a big deal?

To them, if Daisy got so much as a scratch, the sky was falling.

But me? They always assumed I was fine. Nothing to worry about.

I looked at the blood on my palm and suddenly laughed.

When I saw Daisy again, I was out with friends, and we were all carrying outdoor gear. She was screaming and pounding on the man beside her. "Let go of me!""Daisy, who are you trying to fool with that innocent act? We're all adults. You came out with us empty-handed and expected everything for free. Did you really think there wouldn't be a price?"She truly didn't understand. She thought that as long as she looked pitiful enough, everyone would take care of everything for her.No matter where she went, she was used to being the center of attention, with people clearing every obstacle from her path. But she'd forgotten that every favor comes with strings attached.I stepped forward, and my friends closed ranks behind me."Let her go."Daisy's hair was a mess, and there were bruises on her neck. When she saw me, humiliation flashed across her face, followed by bitter jealousy. "Irene, you're loving this, aren't you? Anthony and Arthur won't even talk to me because of you. Now you're the

As luck would have it, Owen lived in the same city as me.I hadn't posted about the trip home, but he had.So when Anthony and the others showed up at the airport to meet me, I wasn't surprised. The moment Arthur saw me, his eyes turned red.Daisy, who was always with them, was nowhere to be seen.Susan stood beside them, her expression serious. "I'm sorry," she said.I gave her a brief nod, then started to walk right past them.Arthur stood frozen, watching Owen and me walk farther and farther away.He hurried after us and grabbed my wrist. Up close, I could see that he'd lost a lot of weight. He had always been slim, but now he was so thin he barely looked like himself. All his old confidence was gone."Irene, please don't ignore me. Just let me explain, okay..."I raised a hand to stop him. "Let's find somewhere to talk. I'm not having this conversation in the middle of the airport."We found a nearby café and sat down. Before they could decide what to order, Owen had already ordere

Daisy's eyes widened, then filled with tears.Usually, seeing her cry was enough to win them over. This time, no one was in the mood.Susan pressed a hand to her forehead and forced herself to calm down. "Let's deal with what's in front of us first. We need to book a hotel, get a cab, and find somewhere to eat."Luckily, it wasn't peak tourist season, so they had no trouble finding a room. But it was a complete rip-off. The room was cramped and outdated, and the air conditioner didn't work. After only one day there, Susan was already on the verge of a breakdown. She cried until her carefully applied makeup ran. She'd never looked so disheveled."It was never like this before."At dinner, Daisy insisted on going to an Instagram-famous restaurant so she could post about it.At first, the others tried to reason with her. "We don't have a reservation. Let's just find somewhere else to eat tonight."But Daisy pouted as usual. "I don't care. A trip doesn't count if you don't post it on Insta

Daisy looked hurt, her eyes turning red, but Anthony and Susan weren't in the mood to comfort her.For the first time, Irene's absence left a hole none of them knew how to fill.Susan opened her mouth to ask for water out of habit, then caught herself. Irene used to buy it without a word and hand each of them a bottle.Anthony needed to charge his gear, but after tearing through his backpack, he couldn't find a power bank. Then he remembered that Irene always carried a heavy bag full of chargers and handed one to anyone who needed it.People bustled around them in the arrivals hall, talking and laughing, but the silence among them felt frozen solid.Even Daisy's usual sulking, which they'd once indulged so easily, now grated on everyone's nerves.Maybe the heat was getting to him, but Anthony realized he actually missed the little sister he'd always dismissed as plain. She never made a fuss or fought for anything. She simply handled everything quietly from the sidelines. He pictured he

But that wasn't true.He really did like Irene. He just didn't have the courage to admit it.Sometimes, he even caught himself resenting Irene for not shining a little brighter. After a while, Arthur almost believed his own lie.He clasped his hands and prayed over and over that he'd see Irene the moment he got off the plane.* * *I had no idea about any of that.By then, I had already arrived at a recording studio in another city. What I didn't expect was to run into someone I knew."You?"The man smiling warmly at me was the stagehand who'd stood up for me at the police station."Hi, I'm Owen Mercer." He held out his hand, then added with an embarrassed smile, "I'm sorry about the other night. I shouldn't have just stood there recording instead of stepping in right away. I was about to call for help, but I couldn't tell whether the two of you were working together, so I thought I should get some proof first..."He seemed like a cautious guy."No, I'm the one who should thank you. To Arthur, the whole world went silent. There was a roar in his ears, and his mind went blank."What do you mean, Irene's gone?"Arthur gripped the phone, his voice shrill with terror."We wanted her to clean up the streamers by the door, but her room was empty. Her clothes, her sheet music... everything was gone. We checked her drawers. Her ID, all her pictures from growing up... all gone."Susan took the phone, sounding as impatient as ever. "Okay, so she's throwing a tantrum and running away again. She's a grown woman, and she's still pulling this. We're about to board. I have to go."Susan was about to hang up.Richard and Elaine were stunned. They hadn't expected their own daughter to be so cold.Elaine said in disbelief, "She's your sister."Susan was holding Daisy's hand. Her voice was flat. "My sister? Haven't you said over and over that she's too plain and that you wish you'd never had her?"Richard and Elaine looked at each other, speechless. Had they really said such cruel t
