Chapter 1

Author: Ellie C
As the only daughter of the Rossi family, I had three exceptional men handpicked and raised by my mother as potential husbands.

Once, they had gone to extraordinary lengths to win my affection. One bought me a centuries-old watchtower on the Sicilian coast. Another presented me with a one-of-a-kind black diamond ring.

Then Blair, the daughter of our longtime butler, returned from boarding school, and all three men became obsessed with her.

They adored her kindness, her innocence, and her delicate nature. Meanwhile, they condemned me for the coldness and ruthlessness I had developed after growing up in a world of blood and violence.

Once they had broken my heart beyond repair, I washed my hands of the three ungrateful bastards and agreed to marry Vito Capello, the Don of the Capello family, who had been left in a vegetative state.

The news shattered their pride.

What I couldn’t understand was why they still thought I was playing hard to get—even after I became Vito’s Donna.

“Have you lost your mind? You’re marrying a vegetable just to spite us?”

Raphael kicked open the dressing room door.

His face was livid, his outrage edged with disbelief as though I had no right to choose a man other than one of them.

Matteo and Luca stood behind him, one on either side, staring at me as though I were throwing another tantrum and waiting for them to stop me.

I stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting my black lace gloves without so much as glancing up.

“I haven’t lost my mind,” I said calmly. “My mother has already approved the match. In four weeks, Vito Capello and I will make our engagement official.”

“Alia Rossi!”

Raphael stormed forward and clamped a hand around my wrist, squeezing hard enough to grind the bones together.

“All because Blair accidentally touched one of your designer gowns, you went crying to your mother and had our shares in the family businesses taken away. Now you’re threatening to marry some half-dead man wasting away in bed?” His grip tightened. “Stop this, Alia. You may be angry with us, but you would never turn both yourself and the Rossi family over to a stranger. You’ve spent your whole life knowing you would marry one of us.”

Pain shot through my wrist, but it was nothing compared to the ache in my chest.

My father had died young, leaving my mother in sole control of the Rossi family.

Determined to secure my future, she brought Raphael, Matteo, and Luca into the family and raised them to become worthy contenders for my hand.

Once, they would have done anything to make me smile.

Raphael bought a centuries-old watchtower on the Sicilian coast. Matteo gave me a one-of-a-kind black diamond ring. Luca handed me a stake in one of the family’s most important auction houses.

Then Blair arrived, and everything changed.

She was fragile and sweet, all wide eyes and trembling smiles. It took almost no effort for her to wrap all three men around her finger.

To them, Blair was an innocent girl who needed to be protected at all costs.

I was the woman they had known all their lives: strong, sharp-tempered, and hopelessly devoted to them. They mistook that devotion for something permanent, something they could wound without ever losing.

I looked into Raphael’s once-familiar face and felt the last trace of warmth inside me die. I raised my free hand and slapped him across the face with all my strength.

“Remember your place, Raphael.” My eyes burned, but my voice remained glacial. “Once Vito and I are married and I take over the family, I’ll give all three of you generous severance packages. Take the money, take Blair, and get the hell out of the Rossi family. I never want to see any of you again.”

“You don’t mean that,” Matteo snarled.

Matteo lunged forward with a roar and shoved me violently to the floor.

My back slammed into the corner of an ornate mahogany cabinet.

A bolt of agony tore through me, bringing tears to my eyes.

“After everything we’ve done for you, you think you can throw us out like servants?” Matteo spat. “Come on, guys. We’re leaving the Rossi family today. Let’s see how long this hollow empire lasts without us out there risking our necks for it!”

He threatened to walk away, clearly expecting me to panic and beg them to stay.

But Luca, always the most levelheaded of the three, grabbed his arm.

The men exchanged looks, and an awkward silence settled over the room.

Leave the family?

They would never dare.

They loved the Rossi family’s staggering wealth and influence far too much. More importantly, they would never make their precious Blair endure a life without luxury.

Matteo’s expression shifted several times before he finally spat on the floor and stormed away.

I lay on the cold floor and let out a bitter laugh.

A fortune’s worth of fireworks burst above the castle. Vito held my hand as we walked down an aisle lined with deep red roses. Members of the Rossi and Capello families filled the seats on both sides. My mother sat in the front row. Her eyes were red, but she was smiling. Before the ceremony began, someone delivered an unsigned letter. One look at the familiar handwriting told me who had sent it.I did not open it. I tossed it into the blazing fireplace. The flames consumed the paper within seconds.Vito made no attempt to stop me. When I returned to his side, he simply tightened his hold on my hand.“You don’t want to know what he wrote?”“It doesn’t matter.”The corner of Vito’s mouth lifted. “Then I suppose I don’t have to worry about my bride changing her mind.”“You were worried?”“Of course.” He leaned close to my ear. “I waited all these years for you to finally choose the right man.”As the ceremony neared its end, he had an attorney bring forward a document.“I hereby transfer

Alia's POVOnce my mother learned the full truth, she gave no one another chance to defend themselves. She expelled Blair from the Rossi family and ordered Raphael, Matteo, and Luca out of the estate before dawn. The three men refused the severance money she offered, insisting they would repay the Rossi family for raising them.I found the claim almost laughable.Raphael stopped me at the foot of the stairs, his voice raw.“Alia, I didn’t know...”I looked at him calmly. “You never tried to know.”Raphael’s eyes were bloodshot. It took him a long time to force out the words.“I admit it. I always knew you loved me.”“I knew that if I threatened to call off our engagement, you would give in to Blair. I thought that no matter what I did, you would choose me in the end.”For the first time, he abandoned every trace of pride and pleaded with me. “I’ll send Blair away. I’ll tell everyone the truth. Just don’t marry Vito. Please.”Matteo and Luca stood nearby, their faces equally hollow.Mat

The steward pulled up the footage from the day Blair carried the hot porridge into Alia's room. The kitchen cameras had captured everything. After making sure she was alone, Blair took a bottle of corrosive cleaning solution from the supply cabinet and poured it into the steaming porridge herself. She practiced crying in front of the mirror several times before picking up the bowl and heading toward Alia’s room. There were no cameras inside the bedroom, but the hallway recording had captured every sound. When the bowl shattered, Alia's scream came first.Alia kept begging someone to call a doctor. Blair did not begin crying and apologizing until she heard the three men approaching. When they rushed into the room, not one of them took a proper look at the burns on Alia's face.Raphael had looked at Alia once. But the moment Blair began crying, he decided Alia was pretending to be hurt again.Matteo had personally ordered every servant to leave and had the doctor turned away. The three o

Raphael’s POVRaphael had no memory of walking back to his room. Even more than that, he refused to admit that everything he had came from a woman. So he rejected Alia from his lofty perch, all while remaining certain she would never leave.Blair was delicate and obedient. I stared at Vito in disbelief. “If you were already awake, why did you keep it a secret?”Vito led me to a private sitting room upstairs. The moment the door closed, some of his composure slipped. He braced one hand against the edge of a table, his breathing turning labored.I reached out to steady him without thinking. “You haven’t recovered yet?”“I was unconscious for too long. I can’t stay on my feet for extended periods yet.”He took advantage of the moment to wrap a hand around my wrist, making no attempt to let go.“Is my fiancée worried about me?”I tried twice to pull free and failed. “I would rather you not collapse at our engagement party.”Vito gave a low laugh. Only then did he tell me the truth about his recovery from the car accident. The damage to his brain had begun healing six months ago, but members of the Capello family’s lesser branches had no intention of letting him wake. They bribed members of his medical team to keep him on dangerously high doses of sedatives,

Vito made his way through the crowd toward me. After years in a vegetative state, he was leaner than the man I had heard about, but the authority in his eyes had not diminished in the slightest. He stopped in the center of the ballroom and swept an indifferent gaze over the crowd.“An engagement party shouldn’t be missing its groom. It seems I arrived just in time.”“I’ll ask you one more time.”His gaze dropped to Raphael’s hand.“Who gave you the nerve to touch my Donna?”Raphael released me on instinct and stepped back, his face tightening.Vito stopped in front of me and lifted my arm to examine the red marks around my wrist. His touch was almost gentle. His eyes were anything but.“You hurt her hand. Yours will pay for it. Fair is fair.”Two bodyguards seized Raphael at once.I gave Vito’s sleeve a light tug. “This is our engagement party.”Vito lowered his eyes to me, and some of the murderous intent surrounding him actually receded.“As you wish.”Raphael’s expression darkened f
