Chapter 3

Auteur: Lyra
I didn’t throw away the charm, though.

It was practically new. A secondhand jewelry shop might give me something for it. Anything would help pay for the trip.

My advisor called just as I left the store.

“Emma, the school’s awards ceremony is this afternoon. Your research project won the top prize!”

“You’ll be recognized at the ceremony, and there’s a five-thousand-dollar award. How many seats should I save for your family?”

My grip tightened around the phone. It took me a while to answer.

“Thank you. But it’ll just be me.”

The line went quiet. Then she sighed.

“You’re such a wonderful girl. I’d be so proud to have a daughter like you. How can they take you for granted like this?”

She knew what things were like at home.

She supervised my potions work. She was also the only person at school who cared which werewolf academy I wanted to attend.

In four years of high school, my parents hadn’t attended a single parent-teacher conference.

“When they take the photos,” I asked, “would you sit next to me?”

“Of course,” she said at once. Her voice caught. “Of course I will.”

I spent the thirty dollars I’d made from the charm on a bouquet.

My family wouldn’t be there, but my advisor would.

My parents wouldn’t bring me flowers. So I bought my own.

When I opened the front door that evening, my whole family was sitting together. For once, they seemed to be waiting for me.

Dad’s face was dark with anger.

“Emma Bennett. Where have you been today?”

“Nowhere special.”

Mom looked furious. “Don’t lie to us!”

Ryan blocked my way. “One more chance. Tell us yourself.”

I sighed.

“I went to the school’s awards ceremony this afternoon. I didn’t tell you because I knew you wouldn’t want to come.”

“She’s lying!” Bella scoffed.

Mom rushed over and slapped me hard across the face.

“An awards ceremony? Then why wasn’t Bella invited?”

For a second, Bella looked nervous.

I looked at Mom through my tears.

“All my life, you’ve told me Bella has more needs than I do. You’ve told me to put her first. And I have. But I don’t choose who gets an award.”

Something flickered in Mom’s eyes. She looked away, impatient.

“Enough. I don’t want to hear your excuses. Bella’s friends saw what you did, and you’re still lying! How did I end up with a daughter like you?”

Bella took out her brand-new phone.

“My friend saw you at a secondhand jewelry shop. And my tiara just happened to go missing today.”

“What’s in your bag, Emma? Didn’t have time to hide the money?”

She reached for my bag. I held on as tightly as I could.

I’d worked for four years to earn what was inside.

Bella cried out as we struggled. Ryan grabbed me at once.

“You stole Bella’s tiara, and you’re still denying it?” Then he turned to her. “It’s okay, Bella. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

His grip was so strong it hurt. He twisted my arm until tears ran down my face, but he didn’t even flinch.

All he cared about was holding me still so Bella could search my bag.

Ryan, had you forgotten I was your sister, too?

You’d promised to protect me once.

Bella yanked my bag open and pulled out the five thousand dollars in cash.

“Still going to deny it?”

I tried desperately to explain. It was my prize money. The school had given me a check, and I’d cashed it at the bank myself.

No one listened. No one believed me.

Ryan looked at me with nothing but cold anger. He dragged me toward my room, then glanced at our parents.

Dad gave a grim nod.

Ryan took my phone and shoved me inside.

From the other side, Dad activated the magical seals on the door and window. The pack used them to confine members who broke its rules. Once they were in place, I couldn’t open either exit.

“Stay in there and think about what you’ve done!” Mom shouted through the door.

For three full days, I had nothing to eat or drink.

No one even checked on me.

On the fourth day, Adrian came to the house.

I begged him through the door to let me out.

His voice was cold. “How dare you steal something I bought for Bella?”

I heard her crying.

“Adrian, this is all my fault. I should have taken better care of your gift.”

He spoke gently to her.

“I’ve been too kind to her. She’s forgotten her place. Now she thinks she can take what’s yours.”

Whatever hope I had left faded with every word.

At last, I understood. I could only count on myself.

That night, once everyone was asleep, I pushed myself up from the bed and pressed a hand against the seal on the window frame.

We’d learned about this in potions class. Blood from a close relative could weaken the caster’s seal. But breaking it this way could leave my wolf too weak to shift for weeks.

I had no choice. No one was going to let me out.

I bit my fingertip and traced Dad’s runes with my blood, over and over. Then I poured the last of my strength into them.

Cold sweat soaked my back. At last, the glowing marks went dark.

I opened the window and jumped.

I would leave this house behind and start a new life.

Mom burst into tears the moment she saw me. She pulled me into her arms.“Emma, I’m so sorry.”I didn’t cry. I didn’t move. I stood rigid in her arms.Dad rubbed her shoulder, trying to comfort her.Ryan held out a brand-new phone.“Emma, this is for you. I should’ve got you something before.”I didn’t take it. I said nothing. The patrol took the men away, then asked me what had happened. Afterward, one of the officers turned to my parents.“She’s a remarkable young woman. How could you let things get this bad?”My parents apologized, visibly ashamed.Mom cried for a while. When I still didn’t respond, she wiped her eyes awkwardly.“Emma, say something.”I had. No one had listened. In the silence that followed, my parents finally seemed to realize where they stood.Dad sounded almost resentful.“You always do this. Are you trying to make us look like terrible parents?”I shook my head.“You know what you did. You can decide how you feel about it.”“So can I.”Dad had nothing to say. Ry

My parents and Ryan were soon on the highway.Adrian followed in his own car. He’d already asked the patrols in the packs along my route to look out for me.“Ryan, see if you can find out where Emma is.”He opened his phone. Someone had posted another update about me.I’d been on the road for three days. Working for meals and a place to sleep had helped me keep going. At first, no one wanted to help. Then, one day, it poured.A woman took pity on me and called me inside out of the rain.I washed a pile of dishes in exchange for a roast chicken. She asked where I was going. I told her I’d been accepted into Sunfang Werewolf Academy and was on my way there. My story ended up online.Once people saw it, they were less wary of me.One man pointed his phone at me and started a livestream.“I’ll give you a ride. How about you join my stream?”I shook my head and kept my eyes on the road.He swore.“Oh, cut the act. Your family’s loaded. Your sister’s online showing off all her expensive stuf

At last, Adrian broke the silence. His gaze was cold.“Bella Bennett, you really disgust me. How dare you forge an acceptance letter.”“I can’t believe I neglected Emma for you.”Bella’s eyes widened.“But you never used to treat me like this! You bought me that expensive tiara. You said you’d keep taking care of me after I started at the academy.”Adrian’s expression darkened.“I looked after you because you said your wolf was weak. You said you couldn’t handle stress and needed someone with you.”“That didn’t give you the right to lie to us.”“What about Emma?” Bella blurted out. “Are you going to run after her now?”Adrian gave a cold, disbelieving laugh.“Who do you think you are? You don’t get to put yourself in the same place as Emma.”“She’s the one I love. She always has been.”Bella went still. His own words seemed to hurt him, too. He’d always thought I was sensible. I could take care of myself. If I was upset, he could make it up to me later.Bella was different. She cried.

Dad snatched it back.“What do you mean, wrong? It has the academy’s name on it. And the seal!”“Please, sir. Let’s stay calm.”The woman tried to reassure him.Adrian stared at the letter. Suddenly, his expression changed.“Check the reference number.”The woman pulled up the admissions records and compared them with the letter.Bella raised her voice, crying.“You think I faked it? Fine! I won’t go here!”She turned to leave, but Ryan caught her arm.“Stay right there. Look at what we did to Emma because of you. You’re not walking away from this.”His face was so cold that Bella’s tears stopped. She stood frozen, staring at the brother who’d once given her anything she wanted. The woman spoke again.“I found it. This number belongs to another student who was admitted. The name has been changed, and the grades don’t match.”Mom’s eyes filled with tears.“What are you saying? We left Emma behind to bring her here, and now you’re telling me…”The woman glanced at Adrian before continuin

“That’s impossible!” Dad said at once. How could anyone walk more than a thousand miles to attend an academy in another pack’s territory? But Dad, that’s what you do when you have no money and no one left to turn to.They’d taken the only five thousand dollars I had, convinced it was money from something I’d stolen. They were the ones who’d left their own daughter with nothing.I had no other way out. All I could do was leave that house on foot and keep walking until I reached Sunfang.Dad’s friend hadn’t gone far. He’d heard the whole thing.“I wondered why a girl like that was having such a hard time. Now I know. Her own family treats her like she doesn’t matter.”They looked at one another. For a long time, no one spoke.Bella’s mouth turned down.“Mom, Dad, I don’t feel very well. Can we come back tomorrow?”Ryan answered first.“No. Tomorrow we’re going to find Emma.”Bella complained that she was sick and accused him of not caring about her. This time, he didn’t give in. He looke

On the sixth day, early check-in had begun for new students. My parents and Ryan drove Bella to campus with a car full of luggage. At the entrance, they ran into an old friend of Dad’s. He gave Dad a look they couldn’t quite read.“Robert. You have quite a daughter.”Dad looked pleased. “Our Bella’s always been special.”Mom smiled and kissed Bella’s cheek.“She has! Honestly, I worried the work would be too much for our sweetheart. And now look at her. She got into Silvermoon Werewolf Academy!”Even Ryan, who usually had little to say, couldn’t stop introducing Bella to the other students.None of them noticed how pale she was getting.Dad’s friend hesitated.“Robert. I’m talking about your other daughter.”My parents stared at him. Ryan went still, his hand frozen on the arm of a student he’d stopped to introduce to Bella. In the distance, Adrian waved to them. When Dad spoke, he barely sounded sure of himself.“Then… who do you mean?”“Who else could he mean? Emma, of course!” Mom s
