Chapter 1

I was trending across the entire internet, buried under a wave of hate, at the exact moment I was curled up on the couch catching up on sleep.

My sister Ruby O'Brien's boyfriend, the top-tier celebrity Josh Dawkins, was working out in the living room in a full set of athletic gear.

He stretched, offering a gentle explanation to whichever camera was closest, walking viewers through his secrets for staying in shape, and mentioning, almost as an afterthought, the research papers he'd stayed up late reading the night before.

The live chat scrolled by in a blur.

[Josh is way too disciplined! Up at the crack of dawn to work out and read. No wonder he made it into Layne's grad program!]

[I'm crying, Josh really is the best. Handsome AND hardworking!]

[Where's Blake, by the way? Saw him sprawled on the couch yesterday. Where'd he go today?]

[Where do you think? Still asleep, probably. I genuinely don't know how the O'Briens raised a son like that. Total trust-fund parasite.]

A second later, the camera swung over to me.

I was wrapped in a blanket, my hair a mess, sunk so deep into the soft couch that only my eyes showed.

The camera seemed to have all the patience in the world, holding a three-minute close-up on me. In those three minutes, the only thing I did was decide the living room lights were too bright, and roll over so my back faced the lens.

The chat exploded.

[So this is the real heir who came back from the countryside? An actual embarrassment to the O'Brien name.]

[Somebody get him out of that house! He's not fit to be in the same shot as our Josh!]

Finding them annoying, I frowned and pushed my face deeper into the cushion, trying to block out the noise.

Someone set a cup of warm milk down on the coffee table beside me.

"Blake," my sister Ruby's voice came low and a little helpless. "We're still live. Could you at least put on a show of trying?"

I didn't move. My eyelids didn't even twitch.

Ruby sighed and dropped her voice further. "Mom and Dad just came downstairs. They're clearly displeased. If you keep this up, they'll be on your case the second filming wraps."

I knew that already.

From the very first day I'd been brought back into this family, they'd never once stopped being disappointed in me. They hated that I had no trace of old-money polish, hated how lazily I carried myself, hated that I'd never even properly finished high school, an embarrassment to their name.

What they liked was Josh, the perfect son-in-law-to-be with his flawless smile. Josh was the masterpiece they'd carefully commissioned for the family. I was the defective piece that had accidentally slipped in with the shipment.

"Just look at Josh..." There was a note of pleading in Ruby's voice.

I finally moved, though not to sit up. I only pulled my head out from the cushion far enough to crack an eyelid and glance over.

Josh had finished stretching and was sipping from a glass of vegetable and fruit juice he'd pressed himself, taking small sips. He sat perfectly straight, as if even the act of drinking had been calculated in advance. Catching my eye, he raised his glass toward me from across the room and gave me a warm smile.

The chat erupted into another round of praise for him, and, along the way, took another swing at me.

"Blake," Ruby murmured by my ear again. "I know you don't like any of this, but just do it as a favor to me, okay? Go wash up, eat something, even just sit up and watch some TV, anything."

'Too much trouble.'

That was the only thought left in my head.

A second later, I dragged the blanket up over my head, wrapping myself completely and shutting out every last bit of light and sound from the outside world.

I could feel Ruby standing beside me for a long time. In the end, all that was left was one more barely audible sigh, and the sound of her footsteps walking away.

It took me a second to realize which "home" she meant.I nodded. "Okay."Ruby drove me there and pulled up outside. She didn't come up, just handed me my bag and said, "I'll come by again in a couple of days."I made a small sound of acknowledgment and headed upstairs.I pulled out my keys and opened the door, and the rich, unmistakable smell of pot roast instantly filled my senses. My foster mother was busy in the kitchen, an apron tied around her waist. She poked her head out at the sound of the door. "Blake, you're home! Perfect timing, dinner's almost ready! Your dad's been asking about you all afternoon."My foster father looked up from the couch, pushed his reading glasses up his nose, and grinned. "I told him my eye kept twitching all day, figured that meant you were coming home. Go wash up, we're about to eat."I tossed my bag onto the couch and sank down into it myself, comfortable enough to let out a happy sigh.This. This was really my home. Two days later, Ruby sho

Anyone who didn't know better might have actually believed they were a pair of doting, devoted parents.Ruby stepped in front of me, her voice cold. "Dad, Mom, stop pressuring him. This is his workplace.""You be quiet!"My mother shot Ruby a glare. "Since when do you get a say in this? If it weren't for you, Blake never would have suffered like this! We're taking him home right now!"She reached out to grab my arm as she spoke.I leaned back, out of her reach.Through the whole scene, I hadn't said a single word. I just watched their performance in silence. It wasn't until they'd talked themselves dry and the drama had built to about as much tension as it could hold that I finally, slowly, got up from the beanbag chair. The movement seemed to give them hope. Both their eyes lit up.I ignored them completely and walked straight to my one and only desk. I pulled open the drawer, dug a document out from under a pile of messy scratch paper, and walked back to stand in front of th

About half a minute passed before she calmly cut him off."You don't need to explain. I used to think we lived in the same world. Now I've realized I can't even understand my own brother. How could I have ever really understood you? Let's end it here."With that, she hung up cleanly, then powered her phone off entirely.Once she'd done all that, she turned back to me. Her eyes, always warm with a gentle kind of humor, now held nothing but endless guilt and confusion."Blake," she said, "is there anything I can do for you now?"I looked at Ruby. Her face was full of confusion and guilt."What can you do for me?"I repeated her own question back to her, thought it over seriously, and finally landed on an answer. "Pour me a glass of water. Lukewarm, please."She froze for a second. But she turned around right away, picked up my glass, washed it thoroughly, went over to the water dispenser and filled it halfway with hot water and halfway with cold, checked the temperature, and onl

He dug a chocolate bar out of his own pocket, tore the wrapper open, and handed it to me. "Here, get something in your stomach. You've got a real battle ahead of you later."I took the chocolate and bit into it, talking through a full mouth. "Thanks, Carl."Watching the easy, unspoken understanding between me and Carl, Ruby's expression dimmed a little further. She stood there, clearly unsure what to do with her hands.Carl seemed not to notice her discomfort and offered warmly, "Since you're finally here, want a tour of where your brother works? You might not realize it, but he's the backbone of this whole place."Ruby blinked in surprise, then nodded, glancing at me as if checking for my approval.I shrugged, indifferent.I took Ruby on a walk through the outer sections of the institute.Everyone who saw me stopped and nodded, calling out "Director." Then they'd either hand me whatever report they were holding or point straight at an equation on the wall with a question."Dir

My father's authority stalled out on the spot. He didn't manage to say another word for a long moment.I didn't give either of them another chance to speak. I grabbed the cushion off the couch, the one that had kept me company for the past few days, and headed straight for the door. It might have been the only thing in this house I'd actually grown fond of.Ruby stepped in front of me, blocking my path. Her expression was a tangle of things: guilt, sympathy, and a thread of pleading underneath it all."Blake, please... give us one more chance. Please?"I looked at her and shook my head. "Sis, the root of the problem is that this family can't actually communicate."I stepped around her and pulled open the front door.Outside, a black luxury sedan was already waiting, parked without a sound. The moment I walked back into my private dorm at the institute, I felt like myself again. There were no fancy crystal chandeliers here, no plush carpets. Just spotless white walls, a bed, a

Ruby didn't say anything. She just waited for me to keep going."Mom and Dad would turn me into their trophy, something to show off wherever they went. The press would dig up every detail of my whole life. Then there'd be endless interviews, meetings, obligations..."I spread my hands. "I already think it's too far to walk downstairs and take out the trash. Do you really think I could handle all that?"I just wanted somewhere quiet to exist, somewhere my brain could actually rest. The O'Briens seemed like a decent enough option for that."I said it calmly, but Ruby's eyes were slowly going red as she listened. The next second, she stood up.She didn't say a word. She just turned and walked toward the main camera, the most prominent one in the whole living room, and reached out, blocking the lens in front of billions of viewers across the country. The screen went dark instantly. My father was the first to react. He lunged forward, trying to pull Ruby's hand off the camera."Wha
