Chapter 1

My engagement ring struck the metal trash can with a sharp clink.

My brother Cade’s brow furrowed.

Before he could speak, Bianca laughed.

“There you are! Alice. What do you think of the gown?”

She stepped away from the altar and turned, letting the skirt sweep across the flagstones.

My gown.

The seamstress had needed four fittings to get the neckline right. Then, two weeks ago, Mom had called to say Rowan wanted a different design.

I’d tried it on once. The zipper wouldn’t close.

Mom had promised to get it fixed.

Now I knew why she hadn’t.

“Rowan and I saw it in the boutique window,” Bianca said. “I said it was gorgeous, and he actually remembered.”

She held out her left hand.

“And look. The exact ring I wanted.”

I remembered sitting beside Rowan at the jeweler’s, studying two velvet boxes.

“Why do we need two?” I asked.

Rowan smiled. “In case something happens to the first one.”

Bianca tipped her hand toward the light.

“Rowan told me you helped with all the planning. Seriously, what would I do without you?”

Behind her, white roses climbed the wooden arch overlooking the pines.

I’d chosen this spot because Rowan had proposed here.

Apparently, I’d chosen the flowers, the music, and the menu for a bonding ceremony that had never been meant for me.

A small, ugly laugh escaped me.

Rowan’s gaze snapped to mine.

For a moment, he looked like the man who used to notice when I went quiet.

Then Bianca asked, “Well? Don’t I look beautiful?”

“You look beautiful,” he said quickly.

Then Dad called out, “Let’s get some pictures before we lose the light.”

“Good idea.” Cade lifted the camera hanging from his neck. “Family photo. Come on, everybody.”

Mom hurried forward to straighten Bianca’s train. Dad took his place beside her.

Cade pressed the camera into my hands.

“You’re better at this. Get a few of us.”

He joined them before I could answer.

There they were: my parents, my brother, my sister, and the man I was supposed to bond with tonight.

I waited for someone to notice I wasn’t in the picture.

No one seemed to care.

Then Rowan looked past the lens at me.

His smile faded.

“Just a few,” he said quietly.

I knew that look. For nine months, it had come with the same reassurance: things would go back to normal.

Whenever I complained, whenever I asked for my life back, he made another promise.

After the trip. After she settled in. After her next appointment.

There was always something we had to get through before it could be my turn.

I raised the camera.

Through the viewfinder, Bianca stood exactly where I’d imagined myself standing.

“Closer together!” someone called.

Bianca shifted toward Rowan.

A woman near the front raised her glass.

“To our Alpha and his beautiful Luna!”

Applause broke out.

My wolf stirred, a low whine pressing against my ribs.

Rowan heard it. His eyes found mine over the camera.

He took a step forward.

Bianca caught his sleeve.

“Is something wrong?”

Her voice was suddenly small.

He stopped.

“No,” he told Bianca.

Then he stopped trying to come toward me. He just looked at Bianca.

My finger found the shutter.

Click.

Mom leaned toward Bianca, beaming.

Click.

Dad rested a proud hand on her shoulder.

Click.

Someone set off a confetti cannon. White petals burst overhead, catching in Bianca’s hair.

The pack cheered.

I kept taking pictures.

Then an elder stepped forward with the ceremonial mantle.

I lowered the camera.

It was deep green, embroidered with the Blackwood crest. Rowan’s grandmother had worn it when she became Luna.

Last winter, Rowan had draped it over my shoulders in his study.

It suits you, he’d said.

Now the elder held it out to him.

My pulse beat hard in my throat.

He could refuse this much. He could say the mantle wasn’t part of the arrangement.

Bianca looked up at him expectantly.

He took it.

As he settled it across her shoulders, she glanced past him at me.

The corner of her mouth lifted, just enough for me to see.

She’d won, and she wanted me to know it.

“Get this one,” my brother called. “This is the important shot.”

I lifted the camera again.

By the time I lowered it, the guests were moving toward the lodge.

Warm light spilled through the open doors. Someone called Bianca’s name, and Mom guided her inside.

Dad followed. Then my brother.

Rowan lingered.

His gaze dropped to my bare finger.

“Where’s your ring?”

I looked toward the trash can.

Before he could follow my glance, Bianca called from the doorway.

“Rowan? Why are you outside?”

“Wait here,” he told me.

Then he went inside.

I stood beneath the arch until the last petals stopped falling.

“Miss?”

A server approached, carrying a seating chart.

“The reception’s started. Should I have someone bring in another chair?”

Through the windows, I could see the head table.

Bianca sat beside Rowan. My parents and brother surrounded them.

I’d checked that seating plan myself.

Three hundred guests. Three hundred places.

Mine was supposed to be beside Rowan.

I shouldn’t have needed an extra chair.

“No,” I said, handing her the camera. “That’s okay.”

My phone vibrated.

An email from the Northern Pack Council.

Your flight departs Friday at 9:10 a.m. All details of your assignment and destination are strictly confidential.

Three days.

Inside, my family raised their glasses for another toast.

No one noticed I was missing.

I turned toward the parking lot.

I was done asking for a place at their table. Done trying to belong in this family.

Three more days, and I’d leave them all behind.

I hadn’t expected to see Rowan again so soon.Three weeks after I declined his request, Blackwood sent him to the Council’s annual security summit. As Alpha, he had every right to attend. As the ward research lead, I was scheduled to present.I saw him halfway through my briefing. He sat near the back, wearing a dark suit. He looked thinner. When our eyes met, he straightened, but I turned back to the map.I finished without losing my place.Afterward, Mara approached me.“He’s asked for five minutes.”I looked toward the windows, where Rowan stood alone.“He volunteered to represent Blackwood,” she added. “Their Beta usually comes.”So he’d found an opportunity I couldn’t simply decline by email.“You don’t have to,” Mara said.“It's fine. Five minutes.”Rowan waited until I stopped in front of him.“Alice.”“Congratulations on Blackwood passing the assessment.”He glanced at the folder in my hand.“Your work was impressive.”“Thank you.”A year ago, his praise would have stayed with

When my plane landed, a woman in a dark coat was waiting beyond baggage claim. Her face lit up when she spotted me.“Alice? I’m Mara, the Council’s security Beta. We’re so glad you’re here.”She shook my hand warmly, then took my suitcase.“How was the flight? Have you eaten?”Outside, she opened the car door and waited while I settled in.“Would you like to grab something to eat first, or go straight to your place?” Mara asked. “Whatever works best for you.”Whatever worked best for me.I couldn’t remember the last time anyone had said that. For the first time since leaving, I felt sure I’d made the right decision. The Northern Pack Council had sent nine invitations.I’d turned down eight. They wanted me for my work on protective wards: the magic woven through pack borders to keep rogues out. Most specialists could detect a breach after it happened. Bianca’s mouth opened.“I—I didn’t mean—”Cade gave a hollow laugh.“So you really did lie. About all of it.”Mom gripped the edge of the table.“Why, Bianca? Why would you do this to your sister?”Bianca looked around the room. Nobody moved toward her.Her expression changed.“Because she took him first.”Rowan stared at her.“What?”“The summer gathering. After graduation.” Her voice rose. “I gave Alice my invitation. If I hadn’t, she never would have met you.”“You didn’t want to go,” Cade said.“I didn’t know Rowan would be there!”She turned back to him.“I liked you all through high school. Three years, and you barely knew I existed. Then she shows up, and two months later, you’re together.”Rowan remembered that night. I’d been sitting on the lodge steps, trying to free a moth trapped inside a lantern. He’d stopped to help. That's how they met.“It should have been me,” she said. “I was only taking back what she got because of me.”Mom shook her head.“So you let us hurt Alice.

Rowan’s wolf slammed against him, searching for a presence that was no longer there. He reached again.Nothing.Across the table, Mom dropped her glass. Water spread over the tablecloth.“What’s happening?” She pressed a hand to her chest. “I can’t feel Alice.”Dad gripped the back of a chair.“She’s left the pack.”Cade stared at him.“What? No. Why would she do that?”Rowan couldn’t answer.I’d been beside him for years. He’d always known I was there, somewhere within reach. Now he couldn’t find me.His phone lay beneath the table. He crouched to retrieve it, nearly losing his balance when his wolf surged again. The investigator was still on the line.“Alpha Rowan? Are you there?”“Yes.” His voice came out rough.“We’re sending you the evidence now.”“Where’s Alice?”“I can’t disclose her location.”“She’s my—”He stopped. This morning, in front of the council, he’d called me a friend. Now he couldn’t even finish saying what I was to him.“I need to speak to her.”“You’ll have to con

“No. I’m not apologizing. I haven’t done anything wrong.”I looked Dad straight in the eye.Mom looked from Bianca to me, then turned toward the elders.“I’m sorry. Alice has had feelings for Alpha Rowan for years.” Her voice was painfully steady. “We never imagined she’d take it this far.”I stared at her in disbelief. She’d helped me choose invitations. She’d cried when I tried on my first gown. Now she couldn’t even look at me.Cade stopped beside Rowan.“Alice, stop embarrassing the family. Just apologize so we can go.”Bianca trembled against Mom.Rowan’s gaze moved to my cheek, then to Dad’s hand around my wrist.“Let her go.”Dad released me.For one foolish second, I thought Rowan was going to put an end to it.Instead, he turned to the elders.“This is all a misunderstanding. Alice hasn’t done anything inappropriate. We’re just friends. Bianca is my only mate.”My fingers went numb.“Rowan.”He looked at me.I held the feather notebook out.“Then tell them where this came from

I found a hotel twenty minutes from pack territory. The room was nothing special, but it beat the storage room my parents expected me to sleep in.I left my suitcase beside the bed, printed my release application in the lobby, and brought it upstairs.Rowan called as I was filling out the last page.I watched his name flash across the screen. Then I answered.“Alice, you left the chat.”His voice sounded tired.“Yes.”“Can you stop? It’s been a long day.”I’d spent that day watching him stand beside my sister at the altar, but somehow I was the one asking too much.I’d thought he might be calling to explain. Tell me why he’d let me walk into that ceremony without warning, then ask me to understand, the way he always did.But I was done trying to understand.Rowan loved me, but whenever it came to Bianca, he made me feel guilty until I gave in.“Where are you?”“A hotel.”He exhaled.“You didn’t need to leave. I talked to Bianca. She’s willing to wait until the weekend for the studio.”
