Chapter 3

Author: Cenlyn
Before I went home, I stopped to clean my mother's headstone.

When I opened the front door, Silas was sitting on the couch.

A box of egg tarts, my favorite, sat on the table in front of him. When he saw me come in, he waved me over.

"You've been busy all night. You must be starving. I got you egg tarts. Didn't you always say you missed these?"

I shook my head.

"No, thanks. I'm not hungry."

Silas came over and took my coat.

"Quit sulking. I got these just for you. If you don't eat, I'm going to worry."

Then he poured me a glass of water, his tone light.

"I'll take you to the procession tomorrow. You love a big crowd, don't you?"

I froze where I stood.

The procession always comes right after the election. It's a big event for the pack.

I'd only entered the election because I wanted someone to truly choose me. I'd never once cared about being Moon Envoy.

But in the end, not one person chose me.

And now Silas was going to be the Moon Escort, the one who's supposed to be closest to the Envoy, and he still wanted me there to watch it all.

My voice came out cold.

"I'm not going."

Silas wouldn't hear of it.

"Don't be like that. You're the only one of us who knows how to take good pictures. If you don't come, who's going to take photos of Vivian?"

He said it like it was obvious, the same way he always did when he wanted me to do something for Vivian.

Vivian was human. Silas had used a witch's potion to pass her off as a wolf.

Three years ago, outside pack territory, Silas had saved her from a group of wolves who were picking on her.

Back then, Vivian's family had suddenly gone bankrupt. Her father had gone to prison, and her mother was sick.

She'd had no choice but to risk taking a job in werewolf territory to pay off their debts.

She'd never expected to be picked on her very first day.

Silas always stood up for what was right. He jumped in without a second thought and chased those wolves off.

He was used to wolves who considered weakness shameful.

He'd never met a human like Vivian, so beautiful and fragile.

So he handed her a tissue.

After that, Vivian became a real part of our lives.

Silas explained it to me.

"Vivian's whole family is human, and none of them are here with her. It's hard for her.

"We value strength, but we're supposed to help the weak too."

So he helped Vivian get into the pack as a wolf.

He even got her father out of prison and saw to it that her mother got well.

At first, Vivian just tagged along with the four of us.

Wherever they went, they always brought me too.

But over time, Silas and I fought about Vivian more and more.

They said I killed the mood, so they just stopped inviting me.

I only found out from Vivian's Instagram posts. I confronted Silas about it.

He just smiled and kissed me.

"It's not like I went out with her alone. There's nothing to get upset about."

After that, they left me behind plenty more times, and I made a scene over it again and again.

But every time, Silas just brushed it off with a few easy reassurances.

"I'm the one who brought Vivian into the pack. I'm responsible for her.

"She doesn't have any other friends. I just feel sorry for her. But you'll always be my only mate."

Then Scott, who'd grown up with me, took their side too.

"Flora, try to understand how hard it is for Vivian, being a human in a werewolf pack."

In the end, even my own brother started trying to talk me around.

"You're so jealous. How is Silas supposed to have any kind of normal social life? Grow up a little!"

I got angry. I cried. I caused scenes.

In the end, all I could do was tell myself they'd just made a new friend, and it wouldn't change anything between us.

Only now did I understand. Vivian and I were like oil and water.

They could never have both of us.

If they chose one, they had to give up the other.

After that, the project Lachlan and I had been building together officially launched.Lachlan told me that after Silas was banished, the other wolves in the pack went after his company, and it quickly went bankrupt. The deal Silas had signed with Vivian fell through because of it.Her family's business took a huge hit, and now they were on the edge of bankruptcy all over again.Later, Vivian's father begged everyone he knew to persuade Lachlan to help them just this once. Lachlan turned him down flat. When I went back to the old house to pack up the things Mom left behind, I happened to run into Vivian near pack territory, picking through trash. She looked worn down. There were even a few gray hairs at her temples."Are you happy now, seeing me like this?"You did it on purpose, didn't you? You made my family go bankrupt all over again."I held my bag and kept my voice calm. "You're overthinking it. I was never out to get you."Vivian's eyes were red, like she was about to cry."Then

Before long, thanks to some quiet whispers I'd started, the whole pack was buzzing with the news that Vivian was actually human.Every Envoy election is a big event for the pack.Being the Moon Envoy isn't just an honor. It means representing the pack's faith in the Moon Goddess. If a human really had posed as a wolf and become Moon Envoy, it was nothing short of blasphemy against the Moon Goddess.Once the Werewolf Council heard, they quickly opened an investigation into Vivian. The fake identity Silas had made for her was airtight, so I'd been ready to send the evidence to the investigators anonymously. But I never expected that when they questioned Silas, he'd just admit to everything he'd done. When Vivian found out, she frantically denied all of it and secretly tried to get another bottle of witch's potion to hide what she was.But she'd already used her last bottle during the Envoy election.Silas wouldn't help her.She couldn't even find a witch, much less buy another potion to

When Silas knocked, I was sitting on the couch drinking coffee.I opened the door, and there he was on the doorstep, looking frantic. When he saw me, Silas gave a relieved smile."I finally found you. Why'd you come here? I was so worried about you."I stepped aside to let him in, then pushed the suitcase by the couch over to him."Good, you're here. Now I don't have to make a special trip.""This is everything you left at my place. You can go through it. Nothing should be missing.""I've already told both our families about the breakup. I've also asked a lawyer to work out how to divide our shared property. ""Once the agreement is ready, I'll send it to you. I won't shortchange you.""Any questions?"Silas's eyes went red."Divide up what? Why are we dividing anything? Aren't we about to become mates?"I gave him a calm smile."Please stop saying things like that. Last night, I became Lachlan's mate."Wolves never betray their mates."Lachlan was sitting nearby. He picked up his cof

Silas walked fast. Scott hesitated for a second, then hurried after him.As soon as they turned the corner, they ran right into Alexander, who was rushing back in a panic to get help."Silas! I've searched everywhere around here, and my sister's nowhere to be found. Her room was cleared out this morning. She must have moved in with Lachlan!"Vivian tried to calm him down, her voice soft."Don't worry. This isn't the first time Flora's thrown a fit because of me, but she always forgives us."Maybe she's just really mad this time and took off to make a point. She'll probably come home on her own soon."All three of them nodded, but they didn't look one bit less worried. They had reason to worry: I'd never left without telling anyone before. They headed to Lachlan's together, and Alexander looked worse with every step."My sister's never been this cold to me."When we were little, she was always the one looking out for me. She loved me and took care of me more than our mom did."But yeste

Lachlan's eyes went wide. When he spoke again, he sounded careful. "You're not joking?"I shook my head."No. If you agree, we can pray to the Moon Goddess right now and become mates."For a split second, joy flashed in Lachlan's eyes.He cleared his throat before he spoke. "But I heard you were about to become Silas's mate. Why come to me all of a sudden?"My voice was flat."Back when I was negotiating a deal with you on Silas's behalf, you said that if I became your mate, you'd always give my company an extra percentage point on every deal we did together."Also, at last night's Envoy election, I told Silas more times than I can count that he had to vote for me, and he still picked Vivian."He's already betrayed me. I might as well choose you as my mate. At least money won't lie to me."Lachlan froze for a second. Then he covered his face and laughed for a long time. When he finally looked at me, his eyes were shining."Of course. I promise, if you become my mate, I'll give you a

At the end of the procession, the Moon Envoy stands before the Moon Goddess's altar with a medallion bearing the White Wolf pack's crest. She prays for a blessing, then tosses the medallion into the crowd.Whoever catches it is the one the Moon Goddess has chosen to bless. When Vivian finished her prayer, she closed her eyes and tossed the medallion into the crowd. After a noisy scramble, the medallion ended up in Silas's hand.He smiled tenderly, and the crowd around him broke into good-natured applause."The Moon Escort caught the Envoy's medallion!""Even the Moon Goddess approves. They should become mates right after the procession and honor her blessing!""Look at their faces. I think it's happening!"Vivian blushed and waved it off, but the way she looked at Silas was pure adoration.Silas rubbed his thumb over the medallion, but he didn't look at her. He walked toward me instead.I was standing in a quiet corner, looking up at the moon.It had reached its highest point. A full
