Chapter 4

Autor: Cenlyn
I was heading for the bedroom when Silas stopped me.

"Once we're officially mates, let's go to your mom's grave together and tell her the good news."

He still remembered. Ever since my mother passed, whenever something important happened to me, I'd go to her grave and tell her all about it.

Too bad. Once tonight's moon set, I wouldn't feel anything ever again.

I kept walking toward the bedroom, my voice flat. "There's no need."

When I got out of the shower, Silas was out on the balcony on the phone. Bits and pieces of what he said drifted in through the gap in the door.

"Don't worry. You know how Flora is. She gets mad at the drop of a hat. She's nothing like a real wolf...

"Relax. Tomorrow I'm still your Moon Escort. Nobody can change that."

I didn't say a word. I just quietly lay down in bed.

Silas would never understand why I got angry.

He thought I just couldn't stand Vivian.

All I wanted was for my future mate not to be that close to another woman.

But now, none of it mattered.

He could be the Moon Escort. He could be Vivian's mate.

I didn't care either way.

The doll my mother made me years ago was sitting on the bed. I hugged it to my chest, and it felt like being back in Mom's arms.

When my mother was alive, the election always seemed like something wonderful.

She used to hold me and tell me about the year she ran for Envoy.

She'd hidden off to one side and waited, wanting to see who would choose her.

Then she saw my father walk up first and drop his ballot into her box without a second's hesitation.

Every time she told that story, she glowed.

"After your brother's father betrayed me, I thought I'd be alone for the rest of my life.

"But the moment your dad cast the first vote for me, I knew he was the mate I wanted to spend my life with.

"When you grow up, you'll find a mate who chooses you without a second thought too."

Too bad I never found a wolf like that.

If Mom were still here, I'd have gotten at least one real vote. I wouldn't have been betrayed by everyone.

When Silas came back in from the balcony, Scott happened to call me.

"Flora, you're not still fighting with Silas, are you? Don't miss the procession just because you're mad."

Silas heard that and laughed.

"She has a temper. Once she's mad, forget the procession. She might even kick me out of the house.

"She has no idea how hard Vivian has it as a human."

He said that last part quietly, almost under his breath, but I still heard it.

"It's all I can do for Vivian, and Flora still has to fight me on it."

Scott laughed.

"Come on, tomorrow's Vivian's big day. Do it for us. Gotta go. Get some sleep."

I stared at the dark screen and didn't say anything.

Back when I thought I was loved, I really did get angry. I made scenes.

But now I knew no one cared when I was hurt, so why bother?

The next day, before the procession started, Silas texted me, "I have to take Vivian. I don't have time to pick you up. Just get a ride."

I locked my phone and didn't think much of his message.

After all, this wasn't the first time he'd put Vivian ahead of me.

Six months ago, right in the middle of his proposal, he got a call that Vivian had fallen and hurt her arm.

I looked at him, silently begging him to stay, but he still walked out. He left me alone to face our embarrassed friends and family.

In his heart, I would always come after Vivian.

Signing me up for the election probably wasn't about helping me get over my fear either. He just wanted to vote for Vivian so she could become Moon Envoy.

I was the only one foolish enough to think he was my last safety net. I'd thought my future mate would choose me without hesitation, just as Dad had chosen Mom.

As I neared the parade float, I heard people gossiping about Silas and Vivian, who stood on top of it.

"This year's Moon Envoy and Moon Escort look really close. I bet not long after the procession, the pack's going to have another pair of mates."

When Silas saw me, he raised an eyebrow.

"You're so late. The procession's about to start."

Vivian smiled at me.

"Thanks for taking our pictures today."

They were standing together in matching outfits, and they really did look like a pair of mates.

When I didn't answer, Silas softened his voice. "Did you hear something? Don't believe it. We're about to have our mating ceremony."

I answered flatly.

"You know exactly what the Moon Escort stands for, and you took the role anyway. Of course people are going to talk.

"Besides, so many are saying it that I can't help hearing it."

Silas froze for a second, looking a little embarrassed.

"I knew you'd read too much into it. But can you please not make a scene here?

"I asked you to take the pictures because we've got nothing to hide."

Nothing to hide?

He was about to take a mate, yet here he was, in front of everyone, joining another woman in a ritual that hinted at so much more. And he called that having nothing to hide.

Vivian tugged on Silas's sleeve.

"Okay, it's time to go."

Silas nodded. Without another look at me, he turned and left with Vivian.

After that, the project Lachlan and I had been building together officially launched.Lachlan told me that after Silas was banished, the other wolves in the pack went after his company, and it quickly went bankrupt. The deal Silas had signed with Vivian fell through because of it.Her family's business took a huge hit, and now they were on the edge of bankruptcy all over again.Later, Vivian's father begged everyone he knew to persuade Lachlan to help them just this once. Lachlan turned him down flat. When I went back to the old house to pack up the things Mom left behind, I happened to run into Vivian near pack territory, picking through trash. She looked worn down. There were even a few gray hairs at her temples."Are you happy now, seeing me like this?"You did it on purpose, didn't you? You made my family go bankrupt all over again."I held my bag and kept my voice calm. "You're overthinking it. I was never out to get you."Vivian's eyes were red, like she was about to cry."Then

Before long, thanks to some quiet whispers I'd started, the whole pack was buzzing with the news that Vivian was actually human.Every Envoy election is a big event for the pack.Being the Moon Envoy isn't just an honor. It means representing the pack's faith in the Moon Goddess. If a human really had posed as a wolf and become Moon Envoy, it was nothing short of blasphemy against the Moon Goddess.Once the Werewolf Council heard, they quickly opened an investigation into Vivian. The fake identity Silas had made for her was airtight, so I'd been ready to send the evidence to the investigators anonymously. But I never expected that when they questioned Silas, he'd just admit to everything he'd done. When Vivian found out, she frantically denied all of it and secretly tried to get another bottle of witch's potion to hide what she was.But she'd already used her last bottle during the Envoy election.Silas wouldn't help her.She couldn't even find a witch, much less buy another potion to

When Silas knocked, I was sitting on the couch drinking coffee.I opened the door, and there he was on the doorstep, looking frantic. When he saw me, Silas gave a relieved smile."I finally found you. Why'd you come here? I was so worried about you."I stepped aside to let him in, then pushed the suitcase by the couch over to him."Good, you're here. Now I don't have to make a special trip.""This is everything you left at my place. You can go through it. Nothing should be missing.""I've already told both our families about the breakup. I've also asked a lawyer to work out how to divide our shared property. ""Once the agreement is ready, I'll send it to you. I won't shortchange you.""Any questions?"Silas's eyes went red."Divide up what? Why are we dividing anything? Aren't we about to become mates?"I gave him a calm smile."Please stop saying things like that. Last night, I became Lachlan's mate."Wolves never betray their mates."Lachlan was sitting nearby. He picked up his cof

Silas walked fast. Scott hesitated for a second, then hurried after him.As soon as they turned the corner, they ran right into Alexander, who was rushing back in a panic to get help."Silas! I've searched everywhere around here, and my sister's nowhere to be found. Her room was cleared out this morning. She must have moved in with Lachlan!"Vivian tried to calm him down, her voice soft."Don't worry. This isn't the first time Flora's thrown a fit because of me, but she always forgives us."Maybe she's just really mad this time and took off to make a point. She'll probably come home on her own soon."All three of them nodded, but they didn't look one bit less worried. They had reason to worry: I'd never left without telling anyone before. They headed to Lachlan's together, and Alexander looked worse with every step."My sister's never been this cold to me."When we were little, she was always the one looking out for me. She loved me and took care of me more than our mom did."But yeste

Lachlan's eyes went wide. When he spoke again, he sounded careful. "You're not joking?"I shook my head."No. If you agree, we can pray to the Moon Goddess right now and become mates."For a split second, joy flashed in Lachlan's eyes.He cleared his throat before he spoke. "But I heard you were about to become Silas's mate. Why come to me all of a sudden?"My voice was flat."Back when I was negotiating a deal with you on Silas's behalf, you said that if I became your mate, you'd always give my company an extra percentage point on every deal we did together."Also, at last night's Envoy election, I told Silas more times than I can count that he had to vote for me, and he still picked Vivian."He's already betrayed me. I might as well choose you as my mate. At least money won't lie to me."Lachlan froze for a second. Then he covered his face and laughed for a long time. When he finally looked at me, his eyes were shining."Of course. I promise, if you become my mate, I'll give you a

At the end of the procession, the Moon Envoy stands before the Moon Goddess's altar with a medallion bearing the White Wolf pack's crest. She prays for a blessing, then tosses the medallion into the crowd.Whoever catches it is the one the Moon Goddess has chosen to bless. When Vivian finished her prayer, she closed her eyes and tossed the medallion into the crowd. After a noisy scramble, the medallion ended up in Silas's hand.He smiled tenderly, and the crowd around him broke into good-natured applause."The Moon Escort caught the Envoy's medallion!""Even the Moon Goddess approves. They should become mates right after the procession and honor her blessing!""Look at their faces. I think it's happening!"Vivian blushed and waved it off, but the way she looked at Silas was pure adoration.Silas rubbed his thumb over the medallion, but he didn't look at her. He walked toward me instead.I was standing in a quiet corner, looking up at the moon.It had reached its highest point. A full
