Chapter 2

Author: Helen
The next morning, Lillian arrived.

She stood in the doorway in a pale pink dress, wearing an apologetic smile. "Claire, I hope this isn't too much trouble. Alexander said the lighting here is better for the photo shoot. I was going to use a hotel."

Alexander held her coat for her, his voice softer than usual. "Don't worry about it. This is a Whitman property too."

I looked at him.

The home Grandfather had left for me to live in had just been reduced to another family asset.

Nicholas handed Lillian a warm glass of milk. "You haven't eaten this morning. Drink some. There are plenty of clothes here. Take your time choosing."

Leon walked in carrying several garment bags and jerked his chin at me. "Don't just stand there. Help her figure out which one works best for the cover."

They walked into my dressing room as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

No one asked if I was willing.

Lillian stopped in front of the wedding dress, her eyes lighting up instantly. "This one is gorgeous."

All three men fell silent for a moment.

Leon frowned first. "Why is this still here?"

I walked over and stood in front of the dress. "Grandfather left this for me."

Lillian pulled her hand back immediately, her eyes reddening in an instant. "I'm sorry, I didn't know. I just thought it would be perfect for the bridal-themed shoot."

Nicholas sighed softly. "Claire, she was only complimenting a dress. You don't have to guard it like she's a thief."

Alexander looked at me. "Take it out."

"What?"

"The wedding dress. The photography team arrives this afternoon. Let Lillian try it on. If it doesn't work, we'll use something else."

He spoke as if he were arranging a sample garment for the company.

I refused immediately. "No."

The smile vanished from Leon's face. "Claire, it's just a dress. A few photos aren't going to ruin it."

"It's not just a dress."

It was the one keepsake Grandfather had left me.

For four years, I'd believed that someday I would wear it, standing beside someone who was willing to love me openly.

Alexander ignored my refusal and reached for the garment bag.

I grabbed his sleeve. "Don't touch it."

He looked down at my hand, his tone cold. "Let go."

Lillian said softly from the side, "Just forget it. If Claire doesn't want to, then let it go. I don't want to cause a fight because of me."

The more considerate she seemed, the more unreasonable I looked in their eyes.

Nicholas walked over and placed his fingers on my wrist, prying my grip open little by little. "Don't make this difficult for everyone. It's just a fitting. They'll return it exactly as it was after the shoot."

His grip wasn't forceful, but it pressed precisely on the spot I'd sprained a few days ago.

The pain made me let go.

Alexander took down the wedding dress.

The moment the garment bag was unzipped, the lace my grandmother had left me spilled into the morning light, its whiteness almost blinding.

Lillian covered her mouth. "Oh my God, it's absolutely stunning."

Leon looked at her, his gaze soft. "You'll look beautiful in it."

I stood where I was and asked quietly, "What about me?"

All three of them fell silent at once.

Alexander looked away.

Nicholas said gently, "When you get married, we can have a new one made that suits you better."

Leon was the most blunt. "Don't compare yourself to Lillian. She has to face the cameras. You don't."

Four years ago, when the wedding dress arrived, Leon had been more excited than I was.

He'd secretly draped the veil over my head, his ears burning red. "Claire, wear this when you marry me someday, okay?"

Alexander had coughed from the side, saying Leon was too young to understand the weight of a promise.

Nicholas had smiled and told me to take my time choosing.

So I did take my time.

Until none of them needed my answer anymore.

When Lillian came out wearing the wedding dress, Alexander's gaze lingered for several seconds.

Nicholas said with genuine admiration, "It looks perfect on you."

Leon immediately pulled out his phone to take a picture. "I'm sending this to the stylist. She'll definitely agree to go with this one."

The long train swept across the floor.

Rainwater on the soles of Lillian's shoes left faint gray marks on the white satin.

I bent down to lift the hem, but Alexander stopped me. "Don't touch it. Let the professionals handle it so you don't damage the lace."

I slowly straightened up.

So I didn't even get to touch my own wedding dress.

That afternoon, the photography team arrived.

Lillian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows in my wedding dress. The photographer kept telling her she looked like a bride from a movie. The magazine editor asked if the dress was a gift from someone special.

Lillian paused for a moment, then answered softly, "It was prepared by someone very important to me."

Alexander didn't correct her.

Nicholas was busy adjusting her train.

Leon smiled and told the photographer to get a few more angles.

I stood at the edge of the frame. Nicholas glanced back at me. "Claire, go wait in the hallway. You're interfering with the composition."

I walked outside.

Through the half-open door, I watched Grandfather's wedding dress become a trophy Lillian could flaunt for the world to see.

That evening, when they left, the assistant packed the wedding dress into the car.

I chased after them to the door. "Leave the dress."

Alexander turned back. "We still need to reshoot tomorrow."

Nicholas said soothingly, "We'll return it as soon as the shoot is done."

Leon had already rolled down his window. "Don't be a killjoy."

The car turned the corner and disappeared.

At the same time, a message from Graham arrived on my phone.

"Ms. Bennett, see you tomorrow evening. Leon tells me you're quiet and easy to get along with. That's exactly my type."

I stared at the words and suddenly laughed.

Somewhere along the way, my personality, my silence, and even my marriage had all become things they could put a price tag on.

Six months later, Whitman Holdings had settled into an entirely new order.Elias had secured his position as chairman, but he never moved into the estate. He said the estate belonged to the past, and the company's future shouldn't begin each day beneath ancestral portraits.Alexander was assigned to the European division to handle long-neglected operations. Before leaving New York, he left me a letter.I didn't open it. I gave it to Martin to file in my private records.Nicholas resigned from the investment committee and volunteered to work at a community school supported by the foundation. Every day he reviewed project accounts and taught high school students the basics of finance.I heard that for the first time, he realized that a single publicity budget he'd casually approved for Lillian could have funded a school's lunch program for two years.Leon took a full year off from public performances. He permanently pulled "Claire" from all platforms and performed thirty charity shows in

Lillian's case uncovered even more problems.Nicholas had vouched for her charity projects to investors. Although there was no evidence yet that he had participated in any embezzlement, the board demanded he publicly explain why he had bypassed the compliance review. He stood in the center of the conference room, bearing the scrutiny of every person present for the first time.Someone asked, "Why did you trust a story full of holes?"Nicholas was silent for a long time. "Because I was selfish. I only wanted to believe her version of events, and because I knew that even if something went wrong, Claire would always clean up after us the way she always had."The room erupted. He looked up at me. "I put someone who didn't deserve it ahead of you, and I took the person who truly cared about me for granted because I thought you'd always be there."I looked away.Leon's situation was even messier.Fans discovered that the song he'd dedicated to Lillian at the concert had been drafted four yea

Nicholas stood outside the hotel all night. When I stepped out the next morning, his shirt was soaked through, and the box of medicine in his hand was warped from the rain.He straightened the moment he saw me. "Good morning."I walked around him.He followed, his voice hoarse. "I had someone pick up cinnamon rolls. The kind you used to love.""I don't eat anything that sweet anymore."He blinked. "Then what do you like now?"I stopped. "Quiet."His face went a shade paler, and he finally stopped following.Alexander's apology was more restrained. He had the walk-in closet at the townhouse restored, replacing every piece of furniture that Lillian had used, and had the housekeeper keep the estate's hallway lights burning through the night again. The housekeeper called to tell me that Alexander sat outside Grandfather's study for hours every day.All I said was, "You don't need to tell me anymore."Leon fell apart completely. He canceled his concerts and posted a photo of an empty seat o

The resources Lillian had used went far beyond what I'd imagined.Alexander had ordered the PR department to bury negative stories about her and bypassed the standard approval process to appoint her as the Whitman Art Fund's annual spokesperson.Nicholas had introduced her to investors and used his personal connections to secure financing for a film.Leon had diverted his music company's promotional budget to her and authorized his team to license an unreleased song to her crew.Worst of all, a portion of the Whitman Foundation's donations, originally earmarked for community schools, had been redirected to pay for publicity for Lillian's personal charity events. In the conference room, she cried so hard she could barely speak. "I didn't know there was anything wrong with the process. They told me I could use those resources. I thought it was normal family support."In the past, her tears would have brought all three of them to her side.Elias only looked at the head of the audit. "What

Elias was from Grandfather Edward's younger brother's branch of the family. His father had died young, and his mother took him away from New York. Grandfather sponsored his education and later put him in charge of the family foundation's education and healthcare programs in northern New England. He rarely attended the family gatherings in New York and never involved himself in the power struggle among the three brothers.Alexander said he lacked ambition.Nicholas said he didn't understand how capital worked.Leon was the harshest. He said a man who had spent years working with rural schools and community clinics wasn't worthy of the Whitmans' name. But on his deathbed, the only person Grandfather had ever seriously mentioned to me was Elias. He said, "In this family, Elias is the only one who understands that caring for someone doesn't mean making decisions for them. Leon was the first to react. "Not in this room? What does that mean?"Martin tucked the documents back into the envelope. "Ms. Bennett has the right to withhold the name until the formal board meeting. Effective tonight, the three of you no longer have any authority over the trust shares."Alexander's face was terrifyingly cold. "Claire, let's talk in private."I had waited four years to hear those words.Every time I'd wanted to talk to him, he said he was in a meeting. The first time reporters cornered me outside my home, he told me to be patient. On my birthday, I waited until past midnight. All he sent was "Something came up."After Lillian appeared, he didn't even bother with excuses. Now, he was finally willing to talk. But I no longer wanted to listen.I handed the ruined wedding dress to Martin. "Please have it sent for restoration. If it can't be restored, have it sealed and stored."Lillian started to cry. "I really didn't know it meant that much to you."Nicholas instinctive
