Chapter 3

Author: Helen
The blind date was set at a members-only restaurant.

When I arrived, Graham was already seated by the window.

He stood to pull out my chair, but his eyes traveled from my face down to my waist, lingering too long before he arranged a polite smile. "The photo didn't do you justice. You're much prettier in person."

I sat down without responding.

He pushed the menu toward me. "Leon said you're not picky. I've already ordered steak and salad for you."

My hand stilled at the edge of the menu.

They had even told a stranger what I liked to eat.

Graham poured me some water, his tone full of self-satisfied generosity. "To be honest, I'm quite satisfied with you. You may not have a powerful family behind you, and your history with the Whitman brothers is a bit complicated, but the fact that they're willing to make arrangements for your future means you're at least not a liability."

I looked up. "Arrange what kind of future?"

He blinked. "You don't know?"

He seemed to realize he'd said too much but quickly decided there was no point in hiding it.

"Nicholas said that if we get married, the family office will pay the down payment on an apartment in Queens, plus give me half a million dollars as a settlement for you to leave the Whitman family for good."

The restaurant was well-heated, but my hands and feet went cold.

Four years of waiting had been reduced to an apartment down payment and half a million dollars.

Graham continued, "I can accept your past, but after we're married, you can't contact them. Any man would have a problem with his wife having had a complicated relationship with three brothers at the same time."

I set my glass down. "Choose your next words carefully."

His expression soured. "Am I wrong? If there was really nothing going on between you and them, why wasn't a single one of them willing to acknowledge you publicly, let alone marry you?"

The private room door swung open.

Nicholas and Lillian walked in.

Lillian's eyes widened in surprise when she saw me. "Claire, you're here too?"

Nicholas's gaze fell on Graham. "How's it going?"

Graham jumped to his feet, his smile turning eager and flattering. "Great. Ms. Bennett is even quieter than I expected. She'll make a wonderful wife."

Nicholas nodded with satisfaction. "Good."

I asked him, "Why are you here?"

Lillian tugged gently at his sleeve. "He's here with me for dinner with a producer. We didn't expect to run into you. Are we interrupting?"

Nicholas patted the back of her hand. "Not at all."

He turned to me, speaking in the tone you'd use with a difficult child. "Graham is a decent man. Don't be picky just because his background doesn't measure up to the Whitmans'."

Emboldened by what he'd heard, Graham pushed even further. "Mr. Whitman, is there any room to negotiate the marriage settlement? After all, she'll have to adjust to my lifestyle once we're married. I may need a bigger place."

I couldn't help but laugh.

Nicholas frowned. "What's funny?"

"I'm laughing because the price you put on me was too low."

His expression darkened instantly. "Claire."

Lillian flinched and stepped back behind him. "Don't be upset. He's just trying to give you a stable home."

I looked at her. "Since when do any of you get to decide where I belong?"

Her eyes reddened immediately.

Nicholas stepped in front of her. "Apologize to her."

"Why should I?"

"Because you're scaring her."

I had heard those words far too many times.

I couldn't confront them openly, or I'd put Lillian in an awkward position.

I couldn't take back my wedding dress, or it would ruin the shoot.

I couldn't appear at their social events, or Lillian would feel insecure.

I picked up my purse to leave.

Nicholas caught my wrist. "Dinner isn't over."

His grip was tight.

Graham laughed awkwardly beside us. "She does have a bit of a temper. But don't worry, Mr. Whitman. Once we're married, I'll teach her to show her husband some respect."

Nicholas heard it but said nothing.

In that moment, the last trace of warmth left inside me went completely cold.

I pried his fingers off one by one. "I'm not marrying him."

Nicholas's gaze hardened. "Then who do you want to marry? Or are you planning to keep stringing the three of us along so we'll be responsible for you forever?"

Lillian said in a small voice, "Claire, a woman's best years are short. Don't let your pride cost you the right person."

I looked at her. "Is that what you told yourself when you were posing in my wedding dress?"

The color drained from her face.

Nicholas slammed his steaming coffee down on the table.

Hot coffee splashed out, scalding the back of my hand.

The searing pain made me gasp.

He froze for a second.

But at the same time, Lillian let out a low cry. "My dress."

A few drops had splashed onto the hem of her skirt.

Nicholas immediately turned and crouched down with a napkin to dab at her skirt. "Did it burn your skin?"

I stared at my hand, the skin already turning red.

There was a time when a tiny bruise from a needle would have him holding my hand, checking it over and over.

He used to say, "If you're in pain, it hurts me even more."

So love really could move on to someone else.

Now, my pain had nothing to do with him anymore.

I took my purse and walked out of the restaurant.

Behind me came Nicholas's detached voice. "Let her go. She'll come back once she calms down."

I didn't look back.

A black sedan was parked at the curb.

Martin rolled down the window. When he saw my hand, he frowned. "Ms. Bennett, what happened to your hand?"

I hid my hand behind my back. "I accidentally burned myself."

He didn't press further, just handed me an envelope.

"Tomorrow evening at seven. The Whitman estate in the Hudson Valley. All three heir candidates have received formal notice."

On the cover of the document was Grandfather Edward's familiar signature.

I traced the letters, my eyes stinging.

Martin said, "You still have one last chance to withdraw the application."

I looked at my reflection in the car window, wrapped in darkness.

"I won't."

Six months later, Whitman Holdings had settled into an entirely new order.Elias had secured his position as chairman, but he never moved into the estate. He said the estate belonged to the past, and the company's future shouldn't begin each day beneath ancestral portraits.Alexander was assigned to the European division to handle long-neglected operations. Before leaving New York, he left me a letter.I didn't open it. I gave it to Martin to file in my private records.Nicholas resigned from the investment committee and volunteered to work at a community school supported by the foundation. Every day he reviewed project accounts and taught high school students the basics of finance.I heard that for the first time, he realized that a single publicity budget he'd casually approved for Lillian could have funded a school's lunch program for two years.Leon took a full year off from public performances. He permanently pulled "Claire" from all platforms and performed thirty charity shows in

Lillian's case uncovered even more problems.Nicholas had vouched for her charity projects to investors. Although there was no evidence yet that he had participated in any embezzlement, the board demanded he publicly explain why he had bypassed the compliance review. He stood in the center of the conference room, bearing the scrutiny of every person present for the first time.Someone asked, "Why did you trust a story full of holes?"Nicholas was silent for a long time. "Because I was selfish. I only wanted to believe her version of events, and because I knew that even if something went wrong, Claire would always clean up after us the way she always had."The room erupted. He looked up at me. "I put someone who didn't deserve it ahead of you, and I took the person who truly cared about me for granted because I thought you'd always be there."I looked away.Leon's situation was even messier.Fans discovered that the song he'd dedicated to Lillian at the concert had been drafted four yea

Nicholas stood outside the hotel all night. When I stepped out the next morning, his shirt was soaked through, and the box of medicine in his hand was warped from the rain.He straightened the moment he saw me. "Good morning."I walked around him.He followed, his voice hoarse. "I had someone pick up cinnamon rolls. The kind you used to love.""I don't eat anything that sweet anymore."He blinked. "Then what do you like now?"I stopped. "Quiet."His face went a shade paler, and he finally stopped following.Alexander's apology was more restrained. He had the walk-in closet at the townhouse restored, replacing every piece of furniture that Lillian had used, and had the housekeeper keep the estate's hallway lights burning through the night again. The housekeeper called to tell me that Alexander sat outside Grandfather's study for hours every day.All I said was, "You don't need to tell me anymore."Leon fell apart completely. He canceled his concerts and posted a photo of an empty seat o

The resources Lillian had used went far beyond what I'd imagined.Alexander had ordered the PR department to bury negative stories about her and bypassed the standard approval process to appoint her as the Whitman Art Fund's annual spokesperson.Nicholas had introduced her to investors and used his personal connections to secure financing for a film.Leon had diverted his music company's promotional budget to her and authorized his team to license an unreleased song to her crew.Worst of all, a portion of the Whitman Foundation's donations, originally earmarked for community schools, had been redirected to pay for publicity for Lillian's personal charity events. In the conference room, she cried so hard she could barely speak. "I didn't know there was anything wrong with the process. They told me I could use those resources. I thought it was normal family support."In the past, her tears would have brought all three of them to her side.Elias only looked at the head of the audit. "What

Elias was from Grandfather Edward's younger brother's branch of the family. His father had died young, and his mother took him away from New York. Grandfather sponsored his education and later put him in charge of the family foundation's education and healthcare programs in northern New England. He rarely attended the family gatherings in New York and never involved himself in the power struggle among the three brothers.Alexander said he lacked ambition.Nicholas said he didn't understand how capital worked.Leon was the harshest. He said a man who had spent years working with rural schools and community clinics wasn't worthy of the Whitmans' name. But on his deathbed, the only person Grandfather had ever seriously mentioned to me was Elias. He said, "In this family, Elias is the only one who understands that caring for someone doesn't mean making decisions for them. Claire, if one day you're tired of it all, you can trust him."I hadn't understood at the time. Now, I did.Alexander s

Leon was the first to react. "Not in this room? What does that mean?"Martin tucked the documents back into the envelope. "Ms. Bennett has the right to withhold the name until the formal board meeting. Effective tonight, the three of you no longer have any authority over the trust shares."Alexander's face was terrifyingly cold. "Claire, let's talk in private."I had waited four years to hear those words.Every time I'd wanted to talk to him, he said he was in a meeting. The first time reporters cornered me outside my home, he told me to be patient. On my birthday, I waited until past midnight. All he sent was "Something came up."After Lillian appeared, he didn't even bother with excuses. Now, he was finally willing to talk. But I no longer wanted to listen.I handed the ruined wedding dress to Martin. "Please have it sent for restoration. If it can't be restored, have it sealed and stored."Lillian started to cry. "I really didn't know it meant that much to you."Nicholas instinctive
