Chapter 4

Author: Helen
The lights of the Whitman estate were almost blinding.

When I arrived, Lillian was sitting in Grandfather Edward's favorite armchair.

A bowl of hot soup sat before her. Alexander held her spoon, Nicholas arranged a cushion behind her back, and Leon crouched by the fireplace, adjusting the temperature for her.

That chair was one I had never been willing to sit in.

Grandfather said that chair would be mine only when I truly became the lady of the house.

Alexander frowned the moment he saw me. "What are you doing here?"

Before I could answer, Martin stepped into the living room behind me. "I notified Ms. Bennett to be here."

Nicholas stood up. "Martin?"

Leon turned around too. "It's not a shareholders' meeting. What are you doing at the estate?"

Martin placed his briefcase on the long table. "At Ms. Bennett's request, tonight we will formally review the supplementary provisions of the family trust established by Edward Whitman. All three current heir candidates are required to be present as witnesses."

The living room fell silent.

Alexander turned to me. "You initiated this?"

I nodded.

Leon scoffed. "Over a blind date and a wedding dress? Aren't the house, the trust fund, and the living allowance Grandfather gave you enough?"

Lillian gently set down her spoon. "Is this about the wedding dress? If it really bothers you that much, I'll give it back right now."

She had her assistant bring in the garment bag.

The moment the bag was opened, I could barely breathe.

The hem of the dress had been cut shorter.

My grandmother's lace had been taken apart and restitched. The once-clean waistline was now covered in rhinestones, and the bodice had been taken in to fit Lillian's figure.

It was no longer the wedding dress Grandfather had entrusted to me.

"How dare you alter it?" My voice shook.

Lillian looked at me helplessly. "The stylist said the original cut wasn't camera-friendly. I thought you weren't going to wear it anymore, and Alexander didn't object..."

Leon stepped in front of her. "It's just an old wedding dress. So what if she altered it? Why are you snapping at her?"

I turned to Alexander.

He avoided my eyes.

Nicholas said in a low voice, "This is Grandfather's home. Don't make a scene here."

It was precisely because this was Grandfather's home that their cruelty cut so deep.

Every corner of this estate carried traces of him.

He taught me to write my first check, came with me to Parents' Day at school, and when he learned I was afraid of the dark, he kept the hallway sconces lit through the night.

And his three grandsons had turned the wedding dress he prepared for me into a publicity prop to win over another woman.

I walked over and touched the severed lace. "Do you even know who left this for me?"

Alexander said nothing.

Nicholas actually said, "If Grandfather were still here, he'd like Lillian too. He wouldn't want us fighting over a wedding dress."

I raised my hand and slapped him.

The sharp crack echoed through the living room. Everyone froze.

Nicholas's head turned with the blow, his gaze slowly going cold.

Leon grabbed my wrist. "Have you lost your mind?"

His fingers clamped down on the scalded skin, and the pain made my whole body tremble.

But I didn't struggle.

"Yes, I've been out of my mind for four years."

Alexander cut in sharply, "Enough."

He turned to Martin. "What's wrong with the trust? Out with it."

Martin produced a document bearing a notarial seal.

"During his lifetime, Edward Whitman placed twenty-seven percent of Whitman Holdings' voting shares into the family trust. These shares have been held by an independent trustee, and no current heir has the authority to dispose of them individually."

Alexander's expression changed.

Martin continued, "The supplementary provisions state that after Ms. Bennett turns twenty-five, she may independently designate one final beneficiary from among the qualified Whitman descendants. The designee will acquire the income rights and voting proxy for those shares, along with the decisive votes needed to nominate the chairman of the board."

The spoon slipped from Lillian's hand onto the carpet.

Leon released my wrist. "What does that mean?"

Martin closed the document. "It means that the control the three of you have been fighting over all these years will ultimately be decided by Ms. Bennett."

The color drained from Nicholas's face bit by bit.

For the first time, Alexander lost his composure. "Why would Grandfather give that kind of power to her?"

Martin glanced at him. "In his accompanying letter, Edward wrote that he wanted to see how the three candidates would treat someone who had nothing to offer them when they didn't know about this provision."

The living room was deathly silent.

Red marks from Leon's grip lingered on my wrist. The ruined wedding dress lay on the long table.

The answer was already clear enough.

Martin turned to me. "Ms. Bennett, you may announce your final choice now or choose to withhold the name for the time being. However, effective tonight, the three candidates may no longer exercise any voting rights attached to the trust shares."

I looked at the three men in front of me, finally seeing their composure crack.

Four years ago, they told me to take my time choosing.

Now, I had my answer.

"The person I've chosen is not in this room."

Six months later, Whitman Holdings had settled into an entirely new order.Elias had secured his position as chairman, but he never moved into the estate. He said the estate belonged to the past, and the company's future shouldn't begin each day beneath ancestral portraits.Alexander was assigned to the European division to handle long-neglected operations. Before leaving New York, he left me a letter.I didn't open it. I gave it to Martin to file in my private records.Nicholas resigned from the investment committee and volunteered to work at a community school supported by the foundation. Every day he reviewed project accounts and taught high school students the basics of finance.I heard that for the first time, he realized that a single publicity budget he'd casually approved for Lillian could have funded a school's lunch program for two years.Leon took a full year off from public performances. He permanently pulled "Claire" from all platforms and performed thirty charity shows in

Lillian's case uncovered even more problems.Nicholas had vouched for her charity projects to investors. Although there was no evidence yet that he had participated in any embezzlement, the board demanded he publicly explain why he had bypassed the compliance review. He stood in the center of the conference room, bearing the scrutiny of every person present for the first time.Someone asked, "Why did you trust a story full of holes?"Nicholas was silent for a long time. "Because I was selfish. I only wanted to believe her version of events, and because I knew that even if something went wrong, Claire would always clean up after us the way she always had."The room erupted. He looked up at me. "I put someone who didn't deserve it ahead of you, and I took the person who truly cared about me for granted because I thought you'd always be there."I looked away.Leon's situation was even messier.Fans discovered that the song he'd dedicated to Lillian at the concert had been drafted four yea

Nicholas stood outside the hotel all night. When I stepped out the next morning, his shirt was soaked through, and the box of medicine in his hand was warped from the rain.He straightened the moment he saw me. "Good morning."I walked around him.He followed, his voice hoarse. "I had someone pick up cinnamon rolls. The kind you used to love.""I don't eat anything that sweet anymore."He blinked. "Then what do you like now?"I stopped. "Quiet."His face went a shade paler, and he finally stopped following.Alexander's apology was more restrained. He had the walk-in closet at the townhouse restored, replacing every piece of furniture that Lillian had used, and had the housekeeper keep the estate's hallway lights burning through the night again. The housekeeper called to tell me that Alexander sat outside Grandfather's study for hours every day.All I said was, "You don't need to tell me anymore."Leon fell apart completely. He canceled his concerts and posted a photo of an empty seat o

The resources Lillian had used went far beyond what I'd imagined.Alexander had ordered the PR department to bury negative stories about her and bypassed the standard approval process to appoint her as the Whitman Art Fund's annual spokesperson.Nicholas had introduced her to investors and used his personal connections to secure financing for a film.Leon had diverted his music company's promotional budget to her and authorized his team to license an unreleased song to her crew.Worst of all, a portion of the Whitman Foundation's donations, originally earmarked for community schools, had been redirected to pay for publicity for Lillian's personal charity events. In the conference room, she cried so hard she could barely speak. "I didn't know there was anything wrong with the process. They told me I could use those resources. I thought it was normal family support."In the past, her tears would have brought all three of them to her side.Elias only looked at the head of the audit. "What

Elias was from Grandfather Edward's younger brother's branch of the family. His father had died young, and his mother took him away from New York. Grandfather sponsored his education and later put him in charge of the family foundation's education and healthcare programs in northern New England. He rarely attended the family gatherings in New York and never involved himself in the power struggle among the three brothers.Alexander said he lacked ambition.Nicholas said he didn't understand how capital worked.Leon was the harshest. He said a man who had spent years working with rural schools and community clinics wasn't worthy of the Whitmans' name. But on his deathbed, the only person Grandfather had ever seriously mentioned to me was Elias. He said, "In this family, Elias is the only one who understands that caring for someone doesn't mean making decisions for them. Claire, if one day you're tired of it all, you can trust him."I hadn't understood at the time. Now, I did.Alexander s

Leon was the first to react. "Not in this room? What does that mean?"Martin tucked the documents back into the envelope. "Ms. Bennett has the right to withhold the name until the formal board meeting. Effective tonight, the three of you no longer have any authority over the trust shares."Alexander's face was terrifyingly cold. "Claire, let's talk in private."I had waited four years to hear those words.Every time I'd wanted to talk to him, he said he was in a meeting. The first time reporters cornered me outside my home, he told me to be patient. On my birthday, I waited until past midnight. All he sent was "Something came up."After Lillian appeared, he didn't even bother with excuses. Now, he was finally willing to talk. But I no longer wanted to listen.I handed the ruined wedding dress to Martin. "Please have it sent for restoration. If it can't be restored, have it sealed and stored."Lillian started to cry. "I really didn't know it meant that much to you."Nicholas instinctive
