Chapter 2

Author: Eirlys
The first scene was three days after Chloe’s death.

Everyone was asking me who did it.

The city's Archon, Chloe’s parents, the citizens—no matter who asked, I just kept my head down and stayed silent.

Finally, it was Juliette.

She grabbed my shoulders, shaking me with tears in her eyes. "Tell us who it is! Don't you want to avenge Chloe?!"

My lips trembled, and I only managed to say, "Stop asking, Juliette."

She left in disgust.

A few days later, the city lost its patience.

I was dragged to Chloe’s grave. The crowd cornered me, demanding a name.

They spit on me. They threw rocks at me.

People yanked my hair and held me down. Fists rained on me until I was covered in bruises and blood.

I managed to break free and ran for my life, a furious mob chasing right behind me.

I finally made it to my house, only to see it engulfed in flames. The angry citizens had burned it down.

Ignoring the fire, I rushed inside and saved the only thing my parents had left me: a portrait of them.

Homeless, I hid in the city’s alleys, surviving on scraps.

But the guards found me. Right in front of my eyes, they ripped my parents' portrait to shreds.

They said a monster like me didn't have a heart, so I wouldn't feel sad anyway.

But I cried until my throat bled.

Eventually, I fled deep into the woods where no one could bother me anymore.

That year, an orphan with nothing to her name, I was only sixteen.

On the altar, Juliette stared at my tear-stained face in the projection and sneered.

"Olivia, isn't this ending just a punishment from the gods? If you hadn't protected the killer, would people have treated you like that? Do you actually feel sorry for yourself? You're the last person on earth who deserves pity! You brought this on yourself!"

The crowd chimed in.

"Shameless! How dare she play the victim?"

"Trying to get our sympathy? Pathetic! Protecting a criminal makes you an accomplice! You belong in Hades!"

"Chloe's family was destroyed. Their daughter is dead, the mother went crazy. They're the ones we should pity!"

Just then, a girl's bright laughter echoed from the projection.

"Chloe! Slow down!"

Chloe’s youthful, smiling face appeared in the air.

On a bright, sunny beach, Chloe ran toward me with a huge smile.

"Take this!"

She splashed a handful of seawater at me.

"My daughter!" Chloe’s father wailed, throwing himself toward the altar.

Seeing Chloe’s glowing face, he broke down crying.

Since Chloe died ten years ago, this strong, cheerful man had aged overnight. His hair went white, and his back hunched permanently.

For ten years, he prayed to the gods every single day, begging to know who hurt his little girl.

But the gods only answered with silence.

No one knew who attacked Chloe that night.

No one except me.

After a playful chase on the beach, the memory shifted to me kneeling faithfully before Athena’s statue, praying.

"Please, gods, let my friends be healthy and happy. Let our friendship flow endlessly, like the sea."

Seeing my devotion, Juliette lost her temper.

"Olivia, you blasphemous liar! You two-faced snake!"

She marched up and pointed in my face.

"How dare you show our childhood memories! Are you trying to make me sick?! Ten years, and you never told the truth once! Do you even deserve to call yourself our friend?"

Right on cue, the next memory showed me secretly throwing away a bouquet of lilies Chloe had given me.

The crowd felt completely validated.

"Chloe was so good to her, and she threw her flowers away! She was probably jealous of Chloe and wanted her dead!"

Hearing their curses, I forced my eyes open and looked at Juliette.

Say something, Juliette.

She knew perfectly well I was severely allergic to lilies. I didn't hate Chloe.

But she didn't explain. She just let the crowd mock me.

"She probably didn't expect the High Priestess to come back with the Mirror of Truth!"

"High Priestess, keep going! We can't wait to see the killer's face!"

Urged on by the crowd, the projection shifted again.

Juliette went totally pale."Then why did you say it was an accident?" Cassandra cried, "I made up that lie to save whatever dignity he had left."Juliette’s tears fell fast."Why? Why lie to me?" Cassandra looked at her with pure helplessness. "Juliette, your father was dead, but we still had to live. If people knew what he did, how could we survive?"That one sentence summed up all her desperation. The crowd was furious."You needed to survive, so you stole Olivia's life?!""You ran away, let your daughter become a High Priestess, while Olivia was cursed and ruined for years!""Olivia never betrayed her friend! She must have recognized the cloak at the funeral! She kept her mouth shut to protect Juliette!" Juliette’s face was ashen, her lips trembling. She slumped on the ground, crying so hard she couldn't even make a sound. She just shook her head."Impossible... impossible..." Just then, she remembered me, lying half-dead on the altar.Overwhelming guilt washed over her, and s

The square fell dead silent.Juliette froze, her voice trembling."Mother... what are you talking about? How could father be a murderer?!"Tears spilled down Juliette's cheeks in total disbelief. Cassandra walked slowly toward me. Seeing how starved and battered I was, her eyes turned red.She bowed deeply to me, saying with heavy grief."Olivia! I am so sorry. I beg for your forgiveness!" I kept my eyes shut. Tears instantly blurred my vision, and a lump in my throat stopped me from speaking.I wanted so badly to tell her I couldn't hold on anymore. Seeing the Archon's widow react this way, the crowd exploded."Gods, it really was her father?""So Olivia was innocent this whole time? She was framed?!"Instantly, everyone looked at me with pity."Ten years! She took the blame for ten years.""How did she survive? No parents, no family, living in the woods, her only keepsake destroyed!""And she just took the Mirror's punishment... gods, that's tragic!" On the altar, Juliette collap

In the projection, Juliette’s mother, Cassandra, brought out the clothes the Archon used to wear, preparing to burn them.Seeing her father’s cloak, Juliette’s eyes teared up."Mother, I want to keep father’s cloak. As a keepsake." But Cassandra’s face changed. She looked away and said, "He's dead. What's the point of keeping clothes? Just burn it."Ignoring Juliette’s protests, she tossed the cloak straight into the fire.In the firelight, the unique golden pattern on the hem was perfectly visible. The image froze. On the altar, Juliette was dead pale. She stared at the cloak, paralyzed with disbelief."No... no... This is impossible! Impossible!"She stumbled backward, breathing heavily, her voice shaking."How could my father's cloak be exactly the same as that monster's? No, no! It can't be the same one!" The priests immediately replayed my memories, comparing the cloak from both scenes side by side.During the process, it felt like a knife was twisting inside my brain. The pain

"Look! The crime scene!""Gods... the truth is finally coming out!"The crowd erupted.Juliette spun around, her eyes locked on the projection. The rainy woods looked terrifying. In the memory, I held a torch, shouting timidly, "Who's there?"No answer. Just the pouring rain hitting the leaves.Suddenly, a flash of lightning illuminated a dark figure in a cloak running past. I fell to the ground in fear. The figure vanished into the dark. Juliette’s pupils shrank. She nearly lost her mind, grabbing the priest."The face! Why is it just a back?! Why can't we see the face?!" The priest scrambled to amplify the Mirror's magic to clear the image. But it remained blurry. Just a dark back, and a faint glimpse of a golden pattern on the hem of the cloak. The priest wiped his sweat, helpless."High Priestess... it must be because in this memory, Olivia never saw his face to begin with! So the Mirror can only show what she saw—his back." Juliette flinched, then snapped."Impossible! I don'

Juliette slammed her staff into the ground and commanded."Olivia! You’re still fighting back?! What kind of monster is worth risking your soul for? He’s just a sinner who ruined our best friend!" Ten years ago, Juliette had yelled at me just like this. When Chloe’s bloody note was made public, I became public enemy number one.Everyone demanded a name.It took Juliette less than a day to go from trusting me, to doubting me, to hating me.She was the only one who knew where I hid in the city. When they tore up my parents' portrait, I begged her for help, but she just slapped me.Staring at me with burning eyes, she said."Olivia, we grew up together. We treated you like a sister. What were we to you? For a rapist, you threw away your best friends!" That night, I was almost stoned to death by the citizens.Juliette’s mother pulled the furious Juliette away, and two days later, their family moved to another city-state, never to return. Now, Juliette’s eyes were ice cold. She raised he
