Chapter 4

Author: Eirlys
Juliette slammed her staff into the ground and commanded.

"Olivia! You’re still fighting back?! What kind of monster is worth risking your soul for? He’s just a sinner who ruined our best friend!"

Ten years ago, Juliette had yelled at me just like this.

When Chloe’s bloody note was made public, I became public enemy number one.

Everyone demanded a name.

It took Juliette less than a day to go from trusting me, to doubting me, to hating me.

She was the only one who knew where I hid in the city.

When they tore up my parents' portrait, I begged her for help, but she just slapped me.

Staring at me with burning eyes, she said.

"Olivia, we grew up together. We treated you like a sister. What were we to you? For a rapist, you threw away your best friends!"

That night, I was almost stoned to death by the citizens.

Juliette’s mother pulled the furious Juliette away, and two days later, their family moved to another city-state, never to return.

Now, Juliette’s eyes were ice cold.

She raised her hand, her voice sharp.

"Increase the power! I won't stop until I get what I want!"

A junior priest hesitated.

"But, High Priestess, her body is too weak, and she's resisting so hard. If we push the magic further... her soul might shatter completely!"

Juliette scoffed coldly.

"Shatter? I’ve prayed to Athena for ten years just to find out the truth! I don't care if she lives or dies! Scum like her deserves to burn in hell!"

The priest trembled and began chanting loudly.

The Mirror hummed fiercely, and the light stabbed into my soul like daggers.

"Agh!"

My screams tore through the square.

Blood poured from my eyes, ears, and nose. My chest felt like it was on fire as my body thrashed against the pillar.

The priest sweated profusely, his voice shaking.

"High Priestess... should we continue? She... she can't take much more!"

Juliette stared at the projection, her expression dark.

"Keep going," she ordered, her voice devoid of emotion.

The divine power roared. The image shook violently.

It was my consciousness fighting a losing battle.

My desperate screams echoed in the air.

Juliette, eyes red, screamed like a madwoman.

"Olivia, who is it?! Who is worth protecting like this?!"

Suddenly, she broke down, crying as she leaned on my shoulder.

"WE were supposed to be your friends."

She sobbed uncontrollably, her body trembling.

Her warm tears fell onto my hand, and I felt a jolt go through me.

My heart ached.

My friend Juliette was crying.

Without thinking, I tried to lift my hand to wipe her tears.

In that split second of weakness, the memory I had buried so deeply broke through and appeared before everyone.

The crowd gasped.

Juliette turned around in shock. When she saw the familiar face in the projection, all the color drained from her face.

Then she found the best healer in the city, begging them to save me.I had fallen into a coma since the trial and wouldn't wake up.The healer sighed. My life force was entirely drained, and the Mirror’s divine punishment had shredded my soul. I only had a few hours left to live. Juliette broke down completely, dropping to her knees by my side."Olivia... I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry! I didn't know anything! I misunderstood you! I was so stupid! We were sisters for years, and I doubted you. I didn't believe

Juliette went totally pale."Then why did you say it was an accident?" Cassandra cried, "I made up that lie to save whatever dignity he had left."Juliette’s tears fell fast."Why? Why lie to me?" Cassandra looked at her with pure helplessness. "Juliette, your father was dead, but we still had to live. If people knew what he did, how could we survive?"That one sentence summed up all her desperation. The crowd was furious."You needed to survive, so you stole Olivia's life?!""You ran away, let your daughter become a High Priestess, while Olivia was cursed and ruined for years!""Olivia never betrayed her friend! She must have recognized the cloak at the funeral! She kept her mouth shut to protect Juliette!" Juliette’s face was ashen, her lips trembling. She slumped on the ground, crying so hard she couldn't even make a sound. She just shook her head."Impossible... impossible..." Just then, she remembered me, lying half-dead on the altar.Overwhelming guilt washed over her, and s

The square fell dead silent.Juliette froze, her voice trembling."Mother... what are you talking about? How could father be a murderer?!"Tears spilled down Juliette's cheeks in total disbelief. Cassandra walked slowly toward me. Seeing how starved and battered I was, her eyes turned red.She bowed deeply to me, saying with heavy grief."Olivia! I am so sorry. I beg for your forgiveness!" I kept my eyes shut. Tears instantly blurred my vision, and a lump in my throat stopped me from speaking.I wanted so badly to tell her I couldn't hold on anymore. Seeing the Archon's widow react this way, the crowd exploded."Gods, it really was her father?""So Olivia was innocent this whole time? She was framed?!"Instantly, everyone looked at me with pity."Ten years! She took the blame for ten years.""How did she survive? No parents, no family, living in the woods, her only keepsake destroyed!""And she just took the Mirror's punishment... gods, that's tragic!" On the altar, Juliette collap

In the projection, Juliette’s mother, Cassandra, brought out the clothes the Archon used to wear, preparing to burn them.Seeing her father’s cloak, Juliette’s eyes teared up."Mother, I want to keep father’s cloak. As a keepsake." But Cassandra’s face changed. She looked away and said, "He's dead. What's the point of keeping clothes? Just burn it."Ignoring Juliette’s protests, she tossed the cloak straight into the fire.In the firelight, the unique golden pattern on the hem was perfectly visible. The image froze. On the altar, Juliette was dead pale. She stared at the cloak, paralyzed with disbelief."No... no... This is impossible! Impossible!"She stumbled backward, breathing heavily, her voice shaking."How could my father's cloak be exactly the same as that monster's? No, no! It can't be the same one!" The priests immediately replayed my memories, comparing the cloak from both scenes side by side.During the process, it felt like a knife was twisting inside my brain. The pain

"Look! The crime scene!""Gods... the truth is finally coming out!"The crowd erupted.Juliette spun around, her eyes locked on the projection. The rainy woods looked terrifying. In the memory, I held a torch, shouting timidly, "Who's there?"No answer. Just the pouring rain hitting the leaves.Suddenly, a flash of lightning illuminated a dark figure in a cloak running past. I fell to the ground in fear. The figure vanished into the dark. Juliette’s pupils shrank. She nearly lost her mind, grabbing the priest."The face! Why is it just a back?! Why can't we see the face?!" The priest scrambled to amplify the Mirror's magic to clear the image. But it remained blurry. Just a dark back, and a faint glimpse of a golden pattern on the hem of the cloak. The priest wiped his sweat, helpless."High Priestess... it must be because in this memory, Olivia never saw his face to begin with! So the Mirror can only show what she saw—his back." Juliette flinched, then snapped."Impossible! I don'
