Chapter 1

Author: Moonlit Spring
When Pierre Pena saw me booking my own ticket, his expression relaxed, as though my decision had settled the matter to his satisfaction.

He reached over to ruffle Charlotte Lefebvre's hair before turning to take my hand.

"Let's go pick out some swimwear," he said casually. "Charlotte and Byron have been taking crash courses in surfing lately, so once we get to Bali, they'll finally get to try it out for real."

Our son, Byron Pena, immediately wrapped his arms around Charlotte's thigh.

"Aunt Charlotte is going to be the prettiest thing on the whole beach!" he gushed.

It was rare for him to be this sweet and affectionate. With me, he'd always kept an inexplicable distance, often looking at me with a cold, faintly contemptuous expression that I could never understand.

Desperate to bridge the gap between us, I'd even looked up the food bloggers he followed online and learned to make every dish he liked.

Yet whenever I eagerly asked whether he enjoyed the dishes I made, he'd scowl, spit the food straight into the trash, and make a dramatic show of gagging.

"Mom, your cooking is disgusting!"

Since the food itself was perfectly fine, I'd assumed it simply wasn't to his taste.

Only now was I beginning to understand the truth: he hated me, and that hatred extended to anything associated with me.

As we drove to the store, I sat in the passenger seat and glanced into the rearview mirror. Byron was nestled comfortably in Charlotte's lap, looking perfectly content.

The moment he caught me watching, though, he stuck out his tongue and spat in my direction. Charlotte covered her mouth and giggled at his reaction.

"You and Byron must have been sworn enemies in a past life! He's honestly the sweetest boy I've ever met, but for some reason, he just can't stand you."

Pierre turned the steering wheel and chimed in as though he were adding to an amusing family anecdote. "Byron definitely loves you more. Every year when he blows out his birthday candles, he wishes his fun, outgoing aunt could be his mom instead."

At that, Charlotte's cheeks flushed bright red. She shot Pierre a shy glance before turning back to tickle Byron's stomach.

"Oh, stop it! You're going to make your mom sad."

Their laughter filled the car, but to me, every chuckle felt like another needle piercing my heart. Looking at the child I'd nearly died bringing into the world, I could only sigh quietly.

Ever since Charlotte had moved in with us, Byron had grown increasingly distant, and I still couldn't understand why.

Perhaps noticing my silence, Pierre leaned over to unbuckle my seat belt. He kissed my forehead gently, apparently hoping to smooth things over.

"It's just a kid's harmless joke. Don't take it to heart."

When we arrived at the swimwear boutique, Pierre initially walked beside me.

However, as we made our way through the store, he gradually drifted toward Charlotte. Before long, Charlotte was holding Byron's hand, while the boy held Pierre's.

The sales associate greeted the three of them with an enthusiastic smile.

"What a beautiful, happy family!"

I lingered a few steps behind them, waiting for someone to notice the mistake. Yet no one turned around, and certainly no one bothered to correct her and clarify things.

As I watched them, my eyes began to burn. Then, just as I was starting to feel completely invisible, Byron picked up a bright pastel-yellow swimsuit and came over to me.

"Mom, you'd look so pretty in this!" he said, his eyes shining with eager anticipation.

Pierre seemed equally pleased and gently nudged me toward the fitting rooms.

"Go try it on! Let's see how good your son's taste is."

For once, I allowed myself to hope that Byron genuinely wanted to make me happy. I took the swimsuit into the fitting room, slipped it on, and carefully smoothed out every little wrinkle as I studied myself in the mirror.

Then I opened the door, expecting at least a compliment from my son.

Instead, a harsh flash went off right in my face.

Even after I made my position clear, Pierre refused to give up.He continued waiting outside my room every day, hoping that if he stayed long enough, I might eventually forgive him.I paid him no attention. Instead, I concentrated on finishing my photographs, exporting the final images, and officially submitting my portfolio to the competition. All that remained was the two-week wait for the results.Byron brought a fresh bouquet to my door every morning. Pierre, meanwhile, spent a fortune arranging nightly fireworks displays, keeping them going for half a month straight.Every evening, brilliant explosions lit up the sky. Yet no matter how spectacular the displays were, they couldn't illuminate a future that no longer existed for us.At the end of each show, three enormous words appeared in the night sky.[I am sorry.]Sherry casually sipped a beer and pushed a bowl of peanuts toward me."This is even grander than the fireworks he arranged when he was courting you," she remar

The makeup artist worked with practiced precision, applying one final touch after another until my features looked brighter and more defined. As I watched my reflection in the mirror, my thoughts drifted back ten years, to the days when I would curl up in Pierre's arms with nothing on my face but my natural skin.He would kiss me and promise that he would love me just as much, no matter how I aged or how my appearance changed. But as the years passed, he began openly criticizing my casual appearance, while praising Charlotte for knowing how to dress well, maintain her youthful looks, and make herself beautiful.Desperate to hold on to his affection, I started visiting the spa every week and hired a private Pilates instructor. I did everything I could to look my best for our tenth-anniversary photos at Lake Tahoe. As the makeup artist carefully secured my veil, I picked up my camera and snapped a quick shot. Just then, Pierre and Byron burst into the salon, having somehow tracked d

Pierre rushed toward me. His eyes were bloodshot, and he pulled me into a desperate embrace.I felt something cold and wet against the hollow of my neck. His tears were falling as he pressed his face against my shoulder."Please... let's not get a divorce, okay?"Byron scrambled over and grabbed my hand. His eyes were red and swollen as he pleaded, "Mommy, please don't abandon Daddy and me!"During the flight to Lake Tahoe, I'd imagined how they might react once they realized I'd truly left. Knowing them, they'd probably assume I was throwing another childish tantrum to get their attention. After all, I'd spent so long resenting their coldness, their refusal to understand me, and the shameless way they'd always favored Charlotte.I thought I would unleash a torrent of rage, barking at them to get out of my life. Instead, I didn't feel a thing, as if the two people standing before me were nothing more than strangers.Pierre's tears continued to soak into my collar, but instead of

After getting off the plane, I headed straight to the boutique inn I'd booked in advance. The innkeeper, Sherry Jackson, was a huge fan of my photography. Knowing I was arriving that day, she'd even gone out of her way to pick me up at the airport. As soon as she saw me, she glanced behind me with a puzzled expression."Where are your husband and son? Didn't you say you were coming here to celebrate your tenth anniversary and finally take those wedding photos?""We're getting a divorce," I replied with a bitter smile.Sherry gasped, covering her mouth. "But Pierre practically went crazy trying to win you over back then! The month you agreed to marry him, he arranged drone shows over Lake Tahoe every night, filling the sky with displays of roses and showering the air with rose petals."He even knelt before those snow-capped peaks and swore he'd never let you down. How did things end up like this?"Her words brought back memories of a love that had once been intense, passionate, a

Pierre slowly bent down and picked up the document from the coffee table. At the bottom of the page, in neat, unmistakable handwriting, was my signature. It was a copy of a divorce agreement. His heart sank as the gravity of reality finally crashed over him.Having slept her fill, Charlotte emerged from her room, rubbing her stomach. "Did Charlotte finish packing our bags yet? Tell her to whip up some pasta for us before we head out."In the past, whenever she made such a request, Pierre would immediately order me to get cooking. Byron would usually join in, impatiently demanding his breakfast as well. This time, however, neither father nor son responded.Charlotte frowned, apparently mistaking their silence for distraction."Did you hear me? I'm hungry!"Her impatient voice brought a memory rushing back to Pierre: Doris dragging her exhausted body out of bed every morning to prepare breakfast for everyone.Charlotte was an extremely picky eater. She insisted on fresh, homemad

When the morning sunlight pierced his eyes, Pierre instinctively shoved the person beside him."Doris, close the blinds."But the unfamiliar scent of perfume that filled his nostrils made him freeze. In an instant, his sleepiness vanished. He turned his head and found Charlotte fast asleep on the pillow beside him. Panic surged through him as he hurriedly pulled back the duvet to check himself.Thankfully, he was still fully clothed, and Charlotte was wearing her pajamas. Nothing inappropriate had happened between them. The commotion woke Byron, who had been sleeping nearby. He curled deeper into Charlotte's arms and mumbled, "Mommy, I want to sleep a little longer."He opened his eyes and finally registered whose arms he was lying in. His expression changed at once, and he burst into hysterical wails."Why are you here, Aunt Charlotte?"Annoyed by his crying, Charlotte lashed out with her foot and kicked him off the bed.Pierre reacted a second too late. He could only watch i
