Chapter 3

Penulis: Through Meteorites
By the time I got home, I had a high fever and could barely think straight.

I didn't know how long I'd been curled up on the couch when Dwayne came rushing in. The second he saw me, his face changed.

"Erin?"

He pressed a hand to my forehead, then grabbed the thermometer. A moment later, the screen showed 102.6 degrees.

"I told you to text me when you got home. Why didn't you say anything? I dropped off your parents and Whitney, then went back to the airport to look for you."

He sounded angry, but his hands were careful.

He dried my hair with a towel, then knelt beside the couch and cleaned the scrapes on my heels with alcohol. I flinched when it touched the broken skin, and he stopped right away.

"Tell me if it hurts. We went too far today. I already talked to the wedding planner. They'll have everything ready again for next week. Just rest for the next few days. I'll handle everything else."

As I watched Dwayne treat the scrapes on my heels, I thought back to college.

Once, I got a high fever after getting caught in a heavy rainstorm. Dwayne carried me on his back for more than a mile to the hospital and stayed by my side all night.

The next day, Whitney joked, "Erin got this sick from one rainstorm? Maybe she's just exaggerating so you'll stay with her."

Dwayne's expression turned cold. "Her fever is 102.2 degrees. You think that's funny? Don't joke about her health again. I don't want to hear it."

Then he tucked the blanket around me and quietly asked if I still felt sick.

Back then, he wouldn't even let Whitney make one thoughtless joke at my expense. Now he was the one making a joke out of my pain for everyone else.

My phone buzzed.

Whitney had just posted a new video titled, "We Pranked the Bride Three Times on Her Wedding Day, and She Fell for Every One!"

The first clip showed me sitting at home alone, waiting for someone to come pick me up.

Then came footage of me rushing into the empty hotel with my wedding dress, followed by me dragging the garment bag from terminal to terminal at the airport.

The final clip caught the moment my face went pale after Whitney told me she was pregnant with Dwayne's baby.

They'd been secretly filming me since 5:00 am. Every moment I spent worried, scared, or humiliated had become content for Whitney's video.

It had been up for less than half an hour and already had over 100,000 likes. Viewers flooded the comments, making fun of me.

"How is the bride this gullible? She believes everything they tell her."

"If you can't take a joke, don't hang out with fun people. She looked dead inside by the end."

"The groom and Whitney make a better couple. She's fun, and he knows how to play along."

A few minutes earlier, I'd gotten a message from work.

The video showed my full name and where I worked, and the client had asked for someone else to take over as project lead. Just like that, the project I'd spent three years working on was put on hold.

I slammed my phone down in front of Dwayne. "Tell her to take it down!"

His expression darkened, and he called Whitney right away. She was already crying when she answered.

"I didn't know people would start attacking Erin. But I already signed a sponsorship deal for the video. If I delete it now, I'll owe 400,000 dollars for breaking the contract, and the platform could kill my reach."

Dwayne fell silent.

After a long pause, he finally said, "Leave it up for now. I'll talk to Erin."

That was the last straw.

"My job is already being affected because of this. What is there left to talk about? She can have the wedding, my family, even you. I've already given her everything.

"And now I'm supposed to give up the one thing I have left so she can benefit from that too?"

Dwayne cut me off, clearly fed up.

"You can find another job. You're always complaining that everyone takes Whitney's side, but have you ever stopped to think about why everyone likes her and no one wants to be around you?

"She's easy to get along with. You can't take a joke, and you turn every little thing into such a big deal that no one can have fun anymore."

Then he left a comment under the video for everyone to see.

"Erin isn't mad. We're doing great, so please don't blame Whitney."

Just like that, one short comment cleared Whitney of any blame and decided for me that everything she'd done was forgiven.

I knocked the phone out of his hand. "Get out."

Dwayne stared at me, stunned. Then his expression hardened. "Erin, you're seriously kicking me out over something this small?"

He grabbed his jacket and stormed toward the door. Before leaving, though, he set some fever medicine and a glass of water on the table.

"Take your medicine. By tomorrow, this will all blow over."

Then he slammed the door behind him.

He still knew how to take care of me when I was sick. He just didn't care how badly he'd humiliated me or how long it would take me to get over it.

He was willing to drive back to the airport in the middle of a typhoon to look for me, but asking Whitney to take down a viral video built on my humiliation was apparently too much.

I went into the bedroom, shut the door, and pulled my suitcase down from the top of the closet. Then I packed my passport and my rebooked ticket.

Dwayne had said it would all be over by tomorrow.

He was right. By tomorrow, he and our seven-year relationship would both be in the past.

Mom and Dad stayed in Lendora for another two weeks. They came by my office every day, but this time, they kept their distance.Whenever it rained, Dad waited across the street under an umbrella. More than once, he looked like he wanted to come over when he saw me laughing with my coworkers, but he always stopped himself. They finally understood that making things right didn't mean forcing their way back into my life. Just because they finally cared didn't mean I had to let them back in.Mom left more than a dozen letters for me at the front desk, each one filled with little things she had failed to notice before. She wrote that after going home and looking through the family albums, she realized there wasn't a single photo of me alone after high school.I had always been the one behind the camera, taking pictures of her, Dad, and Whitney.Mom never asked me to forgive her. She just kept writing the same words over and over."Erin, I'm sorry."Dad quit his job and started thera

Staff eventually helped Mom and Dad back to the hotel, but Dwayne stayed behind in the rain. When I walked over to him, his eyes were already red."Erin, I'm not here to ask you to come home. The video's been taken down, and everyone knows the truth about what happened online. I'll pay you back for the project you lost and cover all your medical bills. And the baby…"His voice broke, and tears started running down his face."I'm sorry. I heard you that day. You grabbed me and told me your stomach hurt. If I'd just turned around and looked at you, maybe we wouldn't have lost the baby."He held the ring out in his palm but made no move to put it on my finger."I know saying I'm sorry won't change anything. I'm just asking for a chance to stay in your life, even if all I ever get to be is someone you know."I looked at the man I had loved for seven years and realized it didn't hurt the way I had expected it to.For a long time, I blamed everything on Whitney. I kept telling myself

Dwayne found me through the company website. There was a photo from the project launch showing me at the center of the event in a tailored suit, wearing a smile he hadn't seen in years.I looked completely at ease. I wasn't watching anyone else's face to see whether I was allowed to be happy. He booked the first flight to Lendora. When Mom and Dad found out, they came with him. After the launch, I stepped out of the venue and found all three of them waiting in the rain.Dwayne looked much thinner than I remembered. In his hand was the engagement ring I had left behind.Mom started crying the moment she saw me. She hurried toward me, then stopped a few steps away."Erin, I won't touch you. You don't have to be scared of me."That was all she managed before she broke down sobbing.Dad stood behind her, looking older and more defeated than I remembered."I was the one who pushed you. I dream about it every night. You fall right in front of me, and I just turn away."He slapped

After my flight landed, I didn't get to start my new life right away. The 13-hour flight drained what little strength I had left. I collapsed in the arrivals hall, and airport staff took me to the hospital. I ended up staying there for a full week.Mom and Dad weren't there. Neither was Dwayne. But when the pain kept me awake at night, a nurse would bring me an extra blanket. The woman in the bed beside mine was from back home, and whenever she peeled an apple, she gave me half.Every small kindness from a stranger made me think back to my wedding day. That was when I realized how little I had ever asked for. For seven years, I had put up with everything and forced myself to laugh along just to get that little bit of care in return.Six months earlier, one of our international partners had invited me to join their team in Lendora. With the wedding coming up, I had turned them down without a second thought. On my third day in the hospital, I emailed them again. They didn't ask ab

Whitney still refused to take responsibility. She insisted the secret recordings were only meant for content, that her assistant had gone after me online without her permission, and that she'd only grabbed me at the hospital because she was disoriented. But there was too much evidence for her tears to explain away.Dwayne came forward and released records showing exactly how the wedding prank had been planned, admitting that he had been part of it.He also made it clear that I had never agreed to be filmed and had never paid anyone to attack Whitney online. For the first time, Mom and Dad went on camera too. They admitted that the jokes at my expense had been going on for ten years. They had always known those jokes hurt me. Dwayne walked back into Whitney's room with bloodshot eyes. The second she saw him, Whitney's eyes filled with tears. "Dwayne, Erin still won't forgive me, will she? Once I'm out of the hospital, I'll get down on my knees and apologize to her."Usually, a few tears were enough to make everyone give in. But this time, Dwayne simply placed his phone in front of her."You said Erin leaked those messages to a gossip account. What proof do you have?"Whitney went quiet for a moment."The account already deleted everything. How am I supposed to prove it now? But who else would hate me enough to do something like that?"Mom opened her mouth to defend Whitney, but Dad stopped her with a hand on her arm.Dwayne didn't argue with her. He had his assistant contact the platform.Within two hours, they had the records.
