Chapter 4

Author: Mingo
The day I left, the house was lively.

In the center of the living room, Chloe sat cross-legged on the carpet, laptop propped on the coffee table, editing a video.

My father stood behind her with his arms crossed. My mother held a plate of strawberries.

They all burst out laughing at the video's content.

Chloe had sharp eyes. She turned and saw me. Her face lit up instantly.

She jumped up and ran over, looping her arm through mine, hanging off me.

"Sis! Perfect timing!"

"I edited all our family's happy moments from over the years into a video. We'll play it for all the guests on your wedding day!"

"Come here, be the first viewer!"

She dragged me toward the screen, winking at me.

On the screen played scene after scene of Chloe's pranks on me over the years.

Thirteen-year-old me, happily opening a gift box—only to scream when a live spider crawled out...

Sixteen-year-old me, the day before a competition, all my prepared files deleted by Chloe...

Last week's me, full of anticipation for the family's surprise—only to have a bucket of glue dumped over my head...

Chloe kept pressing: "Sis, how's the editing? Funny enough?"

I stared at that humiliated version of myself for a long, long time.

Then, bit by bit, I pulled my arm out of hers.

"It's not funny at all."

The living room went silent.

The smile froze on Chloe's face. Her eyes reddened at a visible speed.

"Sis..."

My mother was the first to recover. She hurried over and pulled Chloe into her arms, frowning at me.

"Chloe stayed up all night editing this for you. How can you say that?"

My father set down his glass. His face darkened.

"She did it for your wedding, to liven things up for the guests. Why are you making that face?"

My fingers slowly tightened.

"If you really cared about my wedding."

I heard my own voice. It sounded calm and strange.

"Then why did no one, from beginning to end, ask me if I wanted any of this?"

Dead silence.

Chloe sniffled. Her voice went soft.

"If Sis doesn't like it... I'll delete it. I'll delete it right now..."

She reached for the delete key.

"Don't delete it."

Ethan pressed her hand down.

He stood up, brow furrowed, looking at me with clear displeasure.

"Vivian, it's a small thing. Do you really have to make an issue out of it?"

My mother also said, dissatisfied:

"Yeah, Chloe is your sister. We're all family!"

I actually laughed.

"Family? You've said that my whole life."

"But every time she pulled a prank, I was the one who got hurt. I was the one humiliated."

"I never did anything wrong, and yet I was always the one apologizing."

"Even what video plays at my wedding—no one ever asked my opinion."

"Did you ever really treat me as family?"

SLAM!

My father slapped the coffee table. The champagne glasses jumped.

"Enough!"

"You're still talking back?"

He pointed at me, his finger shaking with anger.

"If you don't think you're part of this family, then get out! We don't have a daughter like you!"

You could hear a pin drop.

Chloe's tears fell on cue. My mother pulled her into her arms and patted her gently.

Ethan turned his head away, too annoyed to look at me again.

"Vivian, I think you really do need some time to cool off."

I nodded.

Fine.

Not another word.

I went upstairs and dragged my suitcase down.

No one turned around.

Behind me, voices of comfort rose one after another.

"Don't cry, sweetheart. Your sister's always had that temper."

"Let her go cool off. She'll be back before dinner."

"Where's she going to go? Who else out there is going to put up with her?"

My father snorted.

"When she was ten, she threatened to run away and hid in the backyard treehouse all day. Before it got dark, she came slinking down for dinner."

My mother held Chloe and said with certainty:

"She can't bear to leave this family. Besides, she has a wedding to attend!"

"Exactly!" Chloe laughed through her tears and pressed play again. "Come on, let's watch it a third time!"

The taxi slowly pulled out of the estate.

On the way to the airport, Chloe posted a preview of the video on Instagram.

My father, my mother, and Ethan all liked and commented.

I blocked all of them. Then I left the family group chat.

They were certain I couldn't bear to leave this family. That I'd come back sooner or later, begging for their forgiveness.

But the moment the plane took off—

I was never coming back.

After my parents left, Ethan came too.He looked worse than I'd imagined. Dark stubble covered his chin. In his hand was the ring I'd left behind."Vivian, can we talk? Just ten minutes."I checked my watch. "I have a group meeting at two. I have eight minutes."Ethan smiled bitterly. When we were together, I always said we had all the time in the world. Now, facing him, I didn't even have ten minutes.I took him to the institute's cafeteria. The moment we sat down, he lowered his head and apologized."The glue—that was my fault.""The dress—that was my fault too.""Back then, I really thought Chloe was just playing around. I didn't think that much about it."I nodded. "I know."He seemed unprepared for how calm I was. He blinked."So... can you give me another chance? Come back with me."I didn't answer. I smiled."Come back with you, to be the housewife with the chopped-off hair, the Donna who manages everything behind you?""In your eyes, you never saw the real me. You always ignore

A week later. My parents found the Northern Research Institute where I was now working. When I came downstairs after finishing an experiment, the security guard told me they had arrived. They were both stopped outside the institute's main gate. They looked much worse than before. My mother, who had always cared about her appearance, had gray hair.My father, who had always cared about face, had wrinkled clothes. They were holding a box of cake. When they saw me, their eyes went red."Vivian, you finally came."But I asked calmly, "Is there something you need?"They clearly froze. The old me would never have spoken to them like this.My father cleared his throat."Come home with us. Whatever it is, we can talk about it at home.""This is my home," I said. His face couldn't hold it together. "You're grown up now. Why are you still throwing childish tantrums..."That sentence sounded very familiar. When Chloe bullied me as a child, they said I was the older sister and shouldn't throw tant

On my third day at the institute, I officially started work. The new project had just launched. I was so busy I had to schedule even my water breaks.During lunch, a colleague handed me a phone."Is the person in this video you?"It was a prank video. The subject was me.The moment I pushed open the door, glue poured down on my head.My carefully prepared look turned into a disaster in an instant. The video also spliced in clips of me being pranked over the years. The title: [Congrats to my sister on her wedding today. It was completely dark outside. At the estate, dinner time had arrived.Ethan checked the time, then looked at the door again."Why isn't Vivian back yet?"My mother looked relaxed. "What's the rush? Every time she throws a tantrum, has she ever lasted past one night?"My father nodded along. "Exactly. Is she really going to call off the wedding?"They all waited for me to come back.Time ticked by. Dinner ended. The clock kept ticking.Outside the door, there was still no movement."It's so late. Why isn't she back?"My mother was the first to grow restless. She called me.But the line couldn't connect.Unease crept into Ethan's chest. He sent me a message too."The system says I've been blocked."His face darkened. Then he noticed I had also left the family group chat. The room went quiet for two seconds.Chloe refused to believe it. She ran toward my room."I don't believe she'd abandon this family."The moment she pushed the door open, her voice stopped. The others followed. The ro

The next morning, Ethan came to see me.When he saw me busy tidying the house, he looked displeased."You still have the mood to clean?""Because of what you said last night, Chloe cried all night."I frowned. "What did I say?""Chloe just wanted to borrow your ribbon for a few days. You deliberately said she could have it—that was you sulking at her, wasn't it?"He said it like it was obvious."She meant no harm. You're her big sister. There's no need to hold it against her."Then he noticed my hair."You cut your hair?"I said "mm."He looked me up and down. To my surprise, he seemed relieved."You should have cut it a long time ago. I always thought your hair was too long. I was going to find a chance to tell you to cut it, but never got around to it."I turned to face him."Why cut it? You used to like it.""That was before. Once we're married, there'll be a lot of family responsibilities waiting for you. Who has time to maintain long hair?""Chloe did us a favor, actually."My han
