Chapter 2

Autor: I. Winter
My phone vibrated nonstop in my pocket during the ride.

When I checked it, the screen showed the company-wide chat.

VELOCITY TECHNOLOGIES - ALL STAFF (452)

The unread count kept climbing.

Someone had tagged me.

Sonia Blake.

"@Ethan Mercer Since you are no longer employed by Velocity Technologies, please remove yourself from this group. Also, after reviewing company property, we discovered that a box of staples at your desk belongs to the company. Return it by tomorrow or reimburse the company for its value."

A neat line of replies followed.

"Received."

"Support management's decision."

"Company assets must be protected."

Even an intern who used to trail after me calling me his mentor sent a thumbs-up sticker.

I stared at the screen.

A box of staples.

Worth maybe a dollar.

So this was how they wanted to play it.

I didn't argue.

I simply tapped LEAVE GROUP.

The cab driver looked at me through the rearview mirror.

"Rough day?"

"No." I smiled and set the phone facedown on my knee. "I just got rid of a truckload of garbage. I feel great."

"Good. You're young. One door closes, another opens."

The car stopped outside the Porsche dealership.

For once, I didn't open the app I used to track rides and calculate how many extra hours of work every expense represented.

I walked straight into the showroom.

A young saleswoman was looking at her phone.

She gave my three-year-old off-the-rack puffer jacket a quick once-over.

"Looking around, sir? If you're only taking photos, please don't use flash."

Her tone was polite enough, but the dismissal underneath it was obvious.

I could hardly blame her.

People size you up by what you are wearing, and I looked nothing like someone walking in to buy a Porsche.

I ignored the attitude and went straight to a midnight-blue Panamera.

For years, I'd refused to buy it.

I'd told myself to save for a house.

Save for the future.

Save money for the company.

Save money so my team would have more resources.

Now?

To hell with saving everything for everyone else.

"This one."

I pointed at the car.

"In stock. Full payment."

I took out the bank card Grant had always joked I would never manage to fill and held it between two fingers.

The saleswoman froze.

Her phone nearly slipped from her hand.

"Sir... did you say full payment?"

"Is that a problem?"

"No! Not at all. One moment. I'll get my manager."

She hurried toward the back office.

A fierce, almost childish satisfaction rose in my chest.

It felt better than closing a fifteen-million-dollar contract.

So this was what living for myself felt like.

My phone rang again.

Grant's private number.

I answered, put him on speaker, and set the phone on the leather seat.

"Getting bold, aren't you, Ethan?"

His voice crackled through the speaker.

"You left the group pretty fast. Guilty conscience?"

I leaned against the car.

"What can I do for you, Grant? If this is about the staples, send me your account details. I'll wire you a dollar."

"Cut the crap!"

His voice jumped an octave.

"Nebula just let it slip that they hired some major technical talent.

"Don't tell me that's you."

News traveled fast.

Recruiters really couldn't keep their mouths shut.

"It is. So what?"

Silence.

Then Sonia's sharp voice came through the phone.

Apparently she was standing right beside him.

"See, Grant? I told you this ungrateful bastard already had somewhere else lined up."

She grabbed the phone.

"Ethan, don't forget you signed a noncompete.

"Do you really think our legal department won't sue you tomorrow and make sure nobody in this industry ever hires you again?"

I sat beside the floor-to-ceiling windows at Nebula Technologies, drinking freshly brewed coffee.Fifty-six floors above Chicago, the building that housed Velocity Technologies looked like a toy."What are you staring at?"A clear female voice came from behind me.Evelyn Shaw.CEO of Nebula Technologies. The woman who had personally approved my $1.5 million signing bonus."The past."I turned and raised my cup."And a fifty-two-million-dollar fireworks show."Evelyn laughed. There was amusement in her expression, but also approval."Richard Hargrove was taken into custody this morning."Accounts tied to him in the Cayman Islands have been frozen. He won't be walking away with a cent of it."Velocity Technologies has entered bankruptcy proceedings."As for Grant and Sonia..."She handed me a file."Embezzlement. Misappropriation. Assistance with money laundering."Counsel thinks Grant is looking at ten years minimum."Sonia's exposure is lighter, but she signed off on

I looked at the two people who had been untouchable yesterday. Now they were begging through a phone screen.I smiled."Sonia, your memory really is terrible."I tapped my temple."I told you on the day I left."Don't come begging."You said I was a D-level employee."You said I was too focused on individual heroics."So now you get to see what individual responsibility actually looks like."One person walks away, and an entire company starts collapsing."That is what your so-called individual heroism was worth."Martin lunged into the camera frame. His face was twisted with rage."Ethan, this is illegal. You're sabotaging a computer system."I'm calling the police."I looked at him almost sympathetically."Martin, read the policy before you make accusations."The lock is a compliance safeguard."When the platform detects an unauthorized or unsafe recovery state, it files a report with oversight authorities."That's a protective control."If those reports happen to

None of his usual executive swagger remained.A large man in a black sui

I checked the time.Exactly twenty-four hours since I'd left Velocity Technologies. So much for "no individual heroes."So much for their precious "teamwork."Put enough fools in one room and all they produce is a larger disaster. But there was something else inside Polaris that nobody at Velocity knew how to handle. At the deepest level of the platform was a compliance lock I'd built years earlier. If the system detected a violent recovery attempt while its administrator state was unresolved, it protected itself and prepared a compliance package. If the lock remained unresolved, records tied to partners, investors, and regulators would be released to the appropriate oversight channels. Those records included evidence of things Grant had always assumed were invisible.Manipulated data.Misused corporate funds.Illegal data collection. Two years of buried misconduct.I checked the backup phone.SYSTEM STATUS: CORE LOCK.COMPLIANCE REPORT TIMER: 21:58:00.Then an unfamili

I left the dealership and pressed the accelerator. The V8 growled through the tunnel. My backup phone updated beside me.CURRENT LOAD: 145%.WARNING: SECONDARY PROTECTION STAGE PREPARING.Then my phone buzzed. Not Sonia.Nate.He was one of the only people in engineering who'd never swallowed Grant's version of reality. He sent me a screenshot from the 452-person company chat. The whole place was melting down.DANA WHITFIELD:"@Grant Palmer @Sonia Blake What is happening with Polaris? Clients can't log in. Our phones are getting destroyed."CURTIS VANCE:"My live demo just froze in front of Mr. Ellison. What is going on?"SONIA BLAKE:"Everyone remain calm. "A noncompete?"I laughed."Sonia, is there anything at all behind that lipstick?"The agreement only mattered if the company paid the required compensation."You were so desperate to save money on my exit that you personally struck the noncompete language from the termination papers."You forced me to sign the revised version."You stamped it yourself."Did you forget already?"The other end of the call went silent. They'd wanted to humiliate me.They'd wanted me gone with as little as possible. In doing that, they had cut off their own escape route."Fine, Ethan. Very good."Grant took the phone back. His voice dropped."So what if Nebula hired you?"You think Nebula picks up other people's trash?"That D rating is going to follow you everywhere."And don't imagine Polaris will fall apart because you're gone.
