Sonia Blake laughed as I had just told the funniest joke she'd heard all year."Beg you? Ethan, are you still half asleep?"She pulled the termination agreement back across the table, checked my signature, and smiled with obvious satisfaction."This company will keep running no matter who leaves. You think far too highly of yourself."Grant Palmer, my direct supervisor, leaned back on the couch and put his feet on the coffee table."Ethan, for old times' sake, let me give you some advice."Once you walk out that door, don't tell people you were fired. It's embarrassing. Say it was for health reasons and you're taking some time off."He tapped the folder beside him."And Polaris is company property. I'll have the technical team take over maintenance. You can leave without worrying about it."I looked at the two clowns in front of me.One was an HR director whose greatest skill was office politics. The other was a department head who could barely tell Java from C++.Velocity

"A noncompete?"I laughed."Sonia, is there anything at all behind that lipstick?"The agreement only mattered if the company paid the required compensation."You were so desperate to save money on my exit that you personally struck the noncompete language from the termination papers."You forced me to sign the revised version."You stamped it yourself."Did you forget already?"The other end of the call went silent. They'd wanted to humiliate me.They'd wanted me gone with as little as possible. In doing that, they had cut off their own escape route."Fine, Ethan. Very good."Grant took the phone back. His voice dropped."So what if Nebula hired you?"You think Nebula picks up other people's trash?"That D rating is going to follow you everywhere."And don't imagine Polaris will fall apart because you're gone. Kyle Renner already took over your access. Everything is running perfectly."Know what that proves?"You spent years making simple work look complicated so y

I checked the time.Exactly twenty-four hours since I'd left Velocity Technologies. So much for "no individual heroes."So much for their precious "teamwork."Put enough fools in one room and all they produce is a larger disaster. But there was something else inside Polaris that nobody at Velocity knew how to handle. At the deepest level of the platform was a compliance lock I'd built years earlier. If the system detected a violent recovery attempt while its administrator state was unresolved, it protected itself and prepared a compliance package. If the lock remained unresolved, records tied to partners, investors, and regulators would be released to the appropriate oversight channels. Those records included evidence of things Grant had always assumed were invisible.Manipulated data.Misused corporate funds.Illegal data collection. Two years of buried misconduct.I checked the backup phone.SYSTEM STATUS: CORE LOCK.COMPLIANCE REPORT TIMER: 21:58:00.Then an unfamili

I looked at the two people who had been untouchable yesterday. Now they were begging through a phone screen.I smiled."Sonia, your memory really is terrible."I tapped my temple."I told you on the day I left."Don't come begging."You said I was a D-level employee."You said I was too focused on individual heroics."So now you get to see what individual responsibility actually looks like."One person walks away, and an entire company starts collapsing."That is what your so-called individual heroism was worth."Martin lunged into the camera frame. His face was twisted with rage."Ethan, this is illegal. You're sabotaging a computer system."I'm calling the police."I looked at him almost sympathetically."Martin, read the policy before you make accusations."The lock is a compliance safeguard."When the platform detects an unauthorized or unsafe recovery state, it files a report with oversight authorities."That's a protective control."If those reports happen to
