Chapter 4

Author: Cinderella
I stared at the two of them working in perfect harmony, and suddenly felt exhausted and ridiculous.

There was no point in arguing anymore. I had nothing left to say. They'd already decided that my money was theirs, my needs were inconvenient, and my choices were wasteful.

I turned away in silence and walked back to the bedroom, my temporary refuge. Their voices continued in muffled conversation outside my door for a long time before finally stopping.

I pulled my phone out and messaged a neighbor back home, asking her to help me get the tenant's phone number. If I had no place here and they wouldn't let me move into a nursing home, then I'd just go back home myself.

That afternoon, when I picked up Mason from school and brought him home, Ryan and Emily were already there. Food containers covered the dining table.

When they saw me, Ryan jumped up and urged me to eat, saying he'd specially ordered takeout from an upscale restaurant.

I sat down, my attitude cool and distant. An awkward tension hung in the air throughout dinner.

I went back to my room afterward and packed my suitcase, planning to buy a ticket home the next day.

Early the next morning, I was still half asleep when I heard noises coming from the living room. The commotion went on for half an hour before everything went quiet.

At 7:30 am, I got up and opened my door. The apartment was empty.

I grabbed my suitcase and was about to leave when my neighbor called.

"Helen, I've been on a seniors' tour with my group, so I wasn't home. My son only went to check your house last night. He said there's no tenant at all, but the house is listed with a real estate agency!

"What's going on? Did you move to the big city with your son to enjoy the good life? Are you really planning to sell the house?"

A ringing filled my ears. Whatever else she said, I couldn't hear it. Cold crept up from the soles of my feet while fury burned in my chest.

I hung up and called Ryan with shaking hands. This time he answered quickly, though the background noise was chaotic.

Before I could speak, he said loudly, "Mom, I have to go on a last-minute business trip. I don't have time to take you to the nursing home. Just grab a cab at the complex entrance.

"Okay, I have to go. I'm about to board."

Then he hung up. I stared at the disconnected call for a moment, then noticed the notification badge on my screen. After a moment, something compelled me to open his social media feed.

The first thing I saw was a post Emily had made three minutes ago. The location tag showed the airport. A grid of nine photos showed the three of them, along with Emily's parents, all smiling brightly.

My breath caught. I dropped my bag and grabbed my old wallet. The bank card was gone.

In that moment, after the crushing disappointment and rage, I felt strangely calm.

So that was what this was really about. They'd said they wanted me to come enjoy life with them, but really they wanted to sell my house back home. And they'd lied about renting it out.

I grabbed my suitcase and went downstairs to find a real estate agent. I told them I wanted to sell a property as quickly as possible.

When Ryan got married, my husband, Peter Pratt, and I had emptied our savings to buy them their current apartment. We'd thought it would be theirs eventually anyway, so we hadn't bothered transferring the deed. Now that oversight worked in my favor.

Then I boarded a train back home. As the scenery shifted outside the window, I felt the wind on my face and suddenly realized tears were streaming down my cheeks.

My tears weren't for the upscale nursing home they'd canceled or the money they'd stolen, but for the calculating betrayal itself and how my son had become someone I no longer recognized.

If Ryan only saw me as something to exploit, then he didn't deserve the apartment Peter and I had bought with our life savings anymore. I would take back the home we'd given them to build their lives in.

I never imagined they'd stoop to using their own child for money. When I threw open the door, the three of them fell silent immediately.Mason ran over and wrapped his arms around my legs. "Grandma!"I looked at Ryan and Emily's guilty expressions, then went to my bedroom and came back with some cash for Mason.I turned to his parents. "It's getting late. I don't have room for you to stay. You should go."Emily stood up in disbelief. "You're kicking us out this late at night?"I nodded. "You can stay at a hotel or drive back tonight. Either way, leave. And don't come back. I don't welcome people who use their own child as a tool. Oh, and remember to pay back what you owe me on time."Ryan's face turned ashen.I looked at him, my voice soft but firm. "From now on, we have nothing to do with each other."I went into my bedroom and closed the door. When Ryan heard those words, he finally panicked and started knocking frantically."Mom, I know I was wrong. Please forgive us, just

Ryan stared at the document in shock when he saw that I was the plaintiff and he was the defendant. The lawsuit accused him of unauthorized use of my bank card. His face turned red with rage. When the buyers saw what was happening, they threw all of Ryan and Emily's belongings out onto the street and called the police. The officers ordered Ryan to leave immediately and not cause any more trouble.Ryan had no choice but to take Emily and Mason to a hotel. Then he started calling me, but I hung up every time. When that didn't work, he switched to sending me messages nonstop. At first they were filled with profanity, calling me heartless and cruel. When I ignored him, he switched tactics and started begging me to drop the lawsuit. He said if people found out he was being sued over this, his life would be over.I calmly read through every message, then replied, "If you want me to drop the lawsuit, pay back every cent you took from that bank card."He went silent. I knew he didn't ha

I looked through the peephole. Sure enough, Ryan and Emily stood there, travel-worn and furious.Emily's shrill voice carried through the door. "You stubborn old woman! I know you're in there. Open this door right now!"I frowned and opened it. Before I could say a word, they pushed past me and planted themselves on the couch. Before I could even sit down, Ryan spoke up anxiously. "Mom, what are you trying to pull? Who gave you permission to sell our apartment?"Do you have any idea how exhausted we were from the flight yesterday? And then we couldn't even get into our own home. We had to go stay with Emily's parents. Mason almost got sick from all the stress!"I nearly laughed. Their audacity was unbelievable. I hadn't told them to go on vacation, and now they were blaming me for being tired?I let out a cold laugh. "Did you ask my permission when you tried to sell this house? Besides, my name is on the deed. If I want to sell it, I can. I don't need your approval."Ryan's face

Ryan tried to calm Emily down, then turned on me with irritation in his voice. "Mom, you've really crossed the line this time."How can you accuse us of taking your money! Besides, Emily was trying to do something nice for you. Instead of being grateful, you attacked her like this!"Hearing my son's resentful voice, I responded coldly, "If you two didn't take the money, then I need to report my missing bank card to the police. There was quite a bit in there. I can't let someone drain it!"I started to hang up. In the split second before my finger hit the button, panicked shouts erupted from both of them."Wait!""Don't!"I smiled, the phone already recording everything. "What's wrong?"Ryan's voice strained to sound calm. "Mom, Emily just checked her bag and found your card in there. She must have put it in when we were canceling the nursing home."Don't call the police. The card is with us. We're about to board our flight. We'll come see you at the nursing home when we get bac

Emily even sent me a private message, saying her mom had bought her a bracelet and asking if I thought it looked good.I replied that it looked nice, then asked her, "Are you asking my opinion because you're planning to buy me one too?"I'm getting up there in years. A flashy style like that wouldn't really suit me. If you really want to buy me something, just get something simple."The moment I sent that, she went silent. She was probably cursing me out. I put my phone down and started cooking.By the time I finished eating and checked my phone again, the family group chat had exploded with messages. Someone had tagged me too.I scrolled up patiently and saw that Emily had screenshotted our private conversation and posted it in the group. She'd added a sickeningly sweet message."My mother-in-law asked me to buy her a bracelet. Ladies, can you give me some advice? I'd feel terrible if I bought something and she didn't like it.She'd even added a few passive-aggressive emojis.

  • They Robbed Me, so I Made Them Homeless   Chapter 5

The first thing I did after getting off the train was drag my suitcase home and dig out the property deed. Then I went to the real estate agency and had them take down the listing for my old house. Only then did I feel at ease enough to go back home. After sitting empty for several days, the house had collected a layer of dust. I didn't turn on the lights. Using the faint glow filtering in from outside, I made my way to Peter's portrait. In the photo, his smile was as gentle as ever. I reached out and gently wiped the dust from the frame. Tears finally slid down my face without a sound.Everything came flooding back. Ryan's coldness, Emily's cruelty, the nursing home reservation they'd canceled, the bank card they'd stolen, the lies they'd told about my house.Beyond the heartache, a strength I'd never felt before began quietly taking root. The next morning, I woke to the familiar sounds of the morning market. I hadn't slept this soundly since Peter had passed away. After washing
