Chapter 4

Author: Sol F
"The chef spent all afternoon on this. You need to get your strength back. Eat up."

I looked at the bowl of greasy cream of mushroom soup and the butter-seared steak that had already gone cold, and I didn't touch any of it.

The doctor had told me plainly that my stomach was still fragile and that I should stick to light, easy-to-digest food for now.

I was about to say something when Vincent dropped his eyes and started stirring the soup. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

The heavy smell of cream hit me, and my stomach rolled.

He hesitated before he pushed the soup toward me.

"There's a jewelry shipment coming into Red Hook tomorrow. Sophia wants to lead a crew on her own for the first time, to show the Commission she's not just a little girl the family has to protect."

He hesitated again, then took out a black velvet box. Inside was the DeLuca family seal.

"She won't let me send more men, but it's her first time at the port, and I don't like it. Go with her and carry the seal for me. If anything goes wrong, the men will take orders from you."

I stared at him, then looked down at the greasy food on the table.

So he wasn't worried about how weak I was after losing the baby.

He was just afraid I'd be too weak to get out of bed and wouldn't be there to catch his precious Sophia if she fell.

I closed my eyes. A bitter ache welled up in my chest and pressed so hard that even breathing hurt.

I hated how easily I gave in. My whole body hurt, and my first instinct was still to worry that saying no would disappoint him.

"The doctor said I need bed rest."

"You don't have to do anything. Just be there with her." Vincent's voice softened. "The second the handoff is done, I'll bring you home myself."

I'd never been involved in family business. In Vincent's eyes, that made me the perfect companion, someone who wouldn't get in the way.

I didn't have the energy to fight with him.

"Okay."

Vincent visibly relaxed and finally met my eyes.

"I knew it. You've always been so understanding."

For the first time, I understood what he meant when he said he loved how understanding I was.

What he really loved was that no matter how much I was hurting, I always put him first.

He told me to finish the soup, then got up and left.

Once the door closed, I had Anna pour out the soup, which had grown a greasy skin on top.

Anna excitedly told me that Professor Walker had just written back. The professor was willing to ask the department to reinstate my admission, but I had to be in Los Angeles for an interview within five days.

Heart pounding, I booked a flight that left in five days.

...

Early the next morning, six black SUVs pulled up outside the estate.

Vincent helped Sophia into her bulletproof vest himself, then bent down to check the magazine of the gun in her holster.

"Stay where your bodyguards can see you. If anything feels off, come straight home. It's just a jewelry shipment. If we lose it, we buy more. Don't get hurt."

Sophia hooked her arm through his and complained with a laugh, "Vincent, I'm just signing a delivery contract. Do you really have to be this nervous?"

"You're the only sister I've got."

Vincent straightened her collar. Only then did he seem to remember I was there.

But all he said to me was, "Take care of Sophia."

As I'd expected, he didn't ask whether my wound still hurt, and he didn't notice that after only a few minutes on my feet, I was already breaking out in a cold sweat.

I nodded and got into the last car.

Sophia sat across from me, stone-faced from the moment she got in.

Right after the wedding, Sophia had been ice-cold to me. I'd assumed she just resented that her brother had less time for her now that he was married.

One Thanksgiving, I made her favorite vanilla cream pie, and she fed it to the dog without even looking at it. Vincent said it was because there were crushed nuts in it, and she was allergic.

Now I finally knew why, and I stopped trying to win her over.

I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes. By the time the convoy reached Red Hook, it was almost evening.

The moment I stepped out of the car, my legs went weak.

Sophia walked right past me and headed eagerly toward the brand-new cargo ship moored at the berth.

The DeLuca guards she passed all greeted her.

"Ms. Russo, your lounge and your vest are ready. The Don says everyone answers to you today."

I followed her, but the guard at the warehouse door blocked my way.

"Sorry. No outsiders allowed in here."

I stopped.

Sophia glanced back. "She's my brother's wife. He sent her with me."

The guard froze, then quickly dropped his arm.

"I'm sorry, Donna. We didn't know..."

I'd been married for two years. The guards here were stationed at the port year-round and never came into the city, yet every one of them knew Sophia's face.

Not one of them knew I was his wife.

The marriage I'd held on to for two years meant nothing at all.

Sophia hadn't been inside five minutes when a deafening blast came from the warehouse.

Flames burst through the glass, and thick smoke billowed out of every door and window.

People on the docks scattered, and alarms wailed across the whole port.

I turned and ran for the emergency exit, but a scream rang out behind me.

I stopped and looked back.

Sophia had fallen at the warehouse door. A steel beam, snapped by the blast, had pinned her leg.

The fire had already spread behind her.

She was sobbing, reaching out for me.

"Victoria! Help me!"

  • They Sacrificed Me for Her   Chapter 21

Two years after leaving New York, Victoria finished her master's in sculpture at UCLA.Her thesis piece was acquired by a museum in Los Angeles. On the contract, she still signed her own name: Victoria Bellini. She didn't rush into another relationship, and she never tied herself to any family again. She had her own studio, her own work, and her own income. When things got hard, she still got scared, and sometimes she still wished someone would make the decision for her. But the hand that brought the chisel down was always her own. After Luca went back to New York, he never attended another marriage auction. The Moretti family publicly admitted that the old report had been false and returned the Bellini education trust with interest. Luca never went to Los Angeles again. He only ordered a copy of the catalog every year when the exhibition opened.Every time it arrived, he'd turn to Victoria's name and remember the year she was 15, lying in a hospital bed with two broken ribs, and how t

The day the annual exhibition closed, it poured in Los Angeles. It wasn't until I'd seen off the last visitors that I noticed Vincent at the entrance to the gallery. He hadn't brought any bodyguards, and he no longer wore the DeLuca family crest. He just had on a black coat soaked through with rain.He stood in front of the last piece of Second in Line for a long time. The woman in the sculpture had already pushed the door open. Behind her there was no family, no marriage, and no man waiting for her to look back.Vincent heard my footsteps and turned around."Did you get the papers from the Commission?""I did.""Does your shoulder still hurt?""Sometimes, when it rains."His lips moved, and his face twisted with pain, but he didn't call for a doctor the way he once would have, and he didn't reach out to touch me."I'm not the Don anymore," he said. "And I'll never use any of the family's power to track you down again."I nodded. "That's your choice.""I know it won't bring you back."

A week later, the Five Families Commission held a special session in New York. It wasn't until a lawyer sent the full minutes to Los Angeles that I learned Vincent was the one who had asked to stand trial. That day, he didn't take the DeLuca family's seat. Instead, he stood at the far end of the long table. He admitted in front of everyone that at the time of their wedding, he'd filed only a temporary declaration of marriage so he could clear the way for Sophia and Luca's engagement whenever he needed to. He admitted that Victoria hadn't lost the baby because she was weak. He had ordered the family's private doctor to sedate her and end the pregnancy. And he admitted that after the port accident, knowing full well she hadn't signed that order, he'd still sent her to be punished in public, then locked her in a safe house illegally under the pretense of protecting her.Every word went into the permanent record.Vincent's uncle was so furious he flipped his chair over right there."Do you

Vincent didn't leave Los Angeles right away. But he stopped sending people to follow me, and he didn't send anything else to my dorm.Three days later, he texted to ask if I'd give him half an hour. He made a point of saying I could pick the place, and that if I said no, he wouldn't come near the school.I stared at that message for a long time. In the end, I agreed to meet him at the gallery.I wanted to say everything that needed saying, once and for all.Vincent got there early. He hadn't brought any bodyguards. All he had in front of him was a black folder."I had my lawyers draw up the papers to register our marriage properly." He slid the papers toward me. "If you're willing, all Five Families will witness it. Half of the DeLuca family's legitimate businesses, every property in my name, and the income from my seat on the Commission will all go into the prenup."If you don't want to go back to New York, we can stay in Los Angeles. You can keep studying. I won't interfere."I didn'

The next day, the dorm manager told me someone had delivered a whole carload of things downstairs. Two bodyguards in black suits stood at the door, with a private doctor, a nutritionist, and a driver lined up beside them. Parked nearby was a bulletproof sedan, its trunk packed with medicine, clothes, and food flown in from New York.Vincent was standing in front of the car.It had been a year, and he was much thinner than I remembered. But he was wearing the diamond cufflinks I'd designed at 18.When he saw me, his eyes slowly turned red."Victoria."I didn't come down the steps."What are you doing here?""Your shoulder hasn't fully healed, and the clinics near campus aren't great. I brought a doctor from New York." As if he was afraid I'd say no, he quickly added, "I found you a new place, too. It's only ten minutes from your studio. The driver will take you wherever you need to go, and security won't get in the way of your life."He was as thoughtful as ever.Whatever he decided was

Luca came to the school first. When I saw him in the gallery, I only paused for a second. He'd lost a lot of weight. He hadn't brought flowers or any gift that might give me the wrong idea. He just set an old document folder down in front of me.Inside were the complete records of how the Moretti family had used my education trust, a cashier's check for the principal plus interest, and a breakdown of everything their first legitimate shipping route had earned over the years."This money should have gone back to you a long time ago."I took it.Pain flickered in Luca's eyes. "You're not going to ask why it took me so long to come?""Your family owes me that money, so of course I'll take it. As for why you came, that has nothing to do with me."He was silent for a long time before he forced the words out."When you were 15, you lured away the men who were hunting me. Your car flipped, you broke two ribs, and I told you in the hospital that I owed you my life. Later, my family only made i
