Chapter 5

Author: Sol F
Sophia's voice was thick with tears.

I gritted my teeth, turned around, and ran back anyway.

The smoke stung so badly I couldn't keep my eyes open. I pulled off my jacket, pressed it over my nose and mouth, knelt beside the steel beam pinning her calf, and heaved with all my strength.

A cramp tore through my belly, and my arms wouldn't stop shaking. Finally, the beam lifted a little, and Sophia yanked her leg free.

"Go!"

I grabbed her arm and dragged her toward the door.

We were almost out when a burning steel frame overhead came crashing down. It clipped my right shoulder, and the red-hot metal burned straight through my clothes. The pain spread from there across my whole back.

I stumbled, but I kept a tight grip on Sophia and got us both out of the fire.

Several black SUVs screeched to a stop outside the warehouse.

Vincent jumped out with his men and reached us in a few strides.

Sophia instantly shook off my hand and threw herself into his arms.

"Vincent!"

Vincent held her tight and checked her over from head to toe.

"Where are you hurt? Can you move your leg?"

Sophia was crying too hard to speak. She just kept shaking her head.

"Don't be scared. I'm here." Vincent rubbed her back. "Forget the shipment. All that matters is that you're okay."

He used to fuss over me and pepper me with questions whenever I got so much as a scratch.

Now it was like he couldn't see me at all.

With nothing left to hold me up, I sank to the ground.

The shoulder of my shirt had burned through, and blood mixed with fluid from the blisters was running down my arm.

It was a long time before Vincent noticed me.

He looked startled. But when he came over, the first thing out of his mouth was, "Victoria, thank God you were with her. If anything had happened to Sophia, I don't know what I would've done."

My heart went cold, and I raised a hand and pushed him away.

His eyes finally landed on the wound on my shoulder, and he frowned.

"You're hurt too? As soon as Sophia's bandaged up, I'll send the doctor over."

I was in too much pain to speak.

And I still had to wait my turn behind Sophia.

When the doctor cut away the fabric stuck to the wound, my vision kept going dark, and soon I passed out.

By the time I came to, it was the next morning.

I was lying in my bedroom at the estate, my right shoulder wrapped in thick bandages.

Anna brought me a glass of water, wiping at her tears. "How did you get hurt this badly? Ms. Russo's already out horseback riding, and the Don hasn't come to look in on you even once! All he cares about is keeping her company. The doctor says you need at least a month of rest, or there'll be lasting damage!"

I hadn't even recovered from losing the baby, and now there was this injury on top of it. I could barely lift my arm.

On my phone was the address Professor Walker had sent for the interview in Los Angeles. My flight left in three days.

And I couldn't even lift my right arm to hold a chisel.

I sniffled and let the tears fall. Anna wiped them away, heartbroken for me.

Suddenly, raised voices came from downstairs.

I pulled on a jacket and went out. The port manager had come straight to the house.

"The warehouse supervisor reported that the ship's generator was leaking oil. Ms. Russo was the one who insisted on turning the power back on, and that's why it blew!

"The Commission owes us an answer!"

Sophia was hiding behind Vincent, her eyes red, her face still pale with shock.

When Vincent saw me, his eyes went to my shoulder.

"Does it still hurt?"

I kept my eyes down. "Not anymore."

Once a wound goes numb, it stops hurting.

Vincent couldn't quite meet my eyes. "I was just about to come find you."

He sighed, pulled me aside, and lowered his voice.

"The Commission needs someone to take public responsibility for the fire. This was Sophia's first time leading a crew, and she barely made it out of there alive. She can't handle being grilled by those people right now."

Vincent took my hand, his voice growing softer and softer.

"You were carrying my seal yesterday, so on paper you were the supervisor on site. Could you tell everyone you were the one who ordered the generator restarted, and apologize to the injured workers' families on Sophia's behalf?

"It's just for show. I'll handle the compensation and everything after."

Then he gave my palm a gentle squeeze. "Please? For me?"

My heart dropped like a stone.

  • They Sacrificed Me for Her   Chapter 21

Two years after leaving New York, Victoria finished her master's in sculpture at UCLA.Her thesis piece was acquired by a museum in Los Angeles. On the contract, she still signed her own name: Victoria Bellini. She didn't rush into another relationship, and she never tied herself to any family again. She had her own studio, her own work, and her own income. When things got hard, she still got scared, and sometimes she still wished someone would make the decision for her. But the hand that brought the chisel down was always her own. After Luca went back to New York, he never attended another marriage auction. The Moretti family publicly admitted that the old report had been false and returned the Bellini education trust with interest. Luca never went to Los Angeles again. He only ordered a copy of the catalog every year when the exhibition opened.Every time it arrived, he'd turn to Victoria's name and remember the year she was 15, lying in a hospital bed with two broken ribs, and how t

  • They Sacrificed Me for Her   Chapter 20

The day the annual exhibition closed, it poured in Los Angeles. It wasn't until I'd seen off the last visitors that I noticed Vincent at the entrance to the gallery. He hadn't brought any bodyguards, and he no longer wore the DeLuca family crest. He just had on a black coat soaked through with rain.He stood in front of the last piece of Second in Line for a long time. The woman in the sculpture had already pushed the door open. Behind her there was no family, no marriage, and no man waiting for her to look back.Vincent heard my footsteps and turned around."Did you get the papers from the Commission?""I did.""Does your shoulder still hurt?""Sometimes, when it rains."His lips moved, and his face twisted with pain, but he didn't call for a doctor the way he once would have, and he didn't reach out to touch me."I'm not the Don anymore," he said. "And I'll never use any of the family's power to track you down again."I nodded. "That's your choice.""I know it won't bring you back."

A week later, the Five Families Commission held a special session in New York. It wasn't until a lawyer sent the full minutes to Los Angeles that I learned Vincent was the one who had asked to stand trial. That day, he didn't take the DeLuca family's seat. Instead, he stood at the far end of the long table. He admitted in front of everyone that at the time of their wedding, he'd filed only a temporary declaration of marriage so he could clear the way for Sophia and Luca's engagement whenever he needed to. He admitted that Victoria hadn't lost the baby because she was weak. He had ordered the family's private doctor to sedate her and end the pregnancy. And he admitted that after the port accident, knowing full well she hadn't signed that order, he'd still sent her to be punished in public, then locked her in a safe house illegally under the pretense of protecting her.Every word went into the permanent record.Vincent's uncle was so furious he flipped his chair over right there."Do you

Vincent didn't leave Los Angeles right away. But he stopped sending people to follow me, and he didn't send anything else to my dorm.Three days later, he texted to ask if I'd give him half an hour. He made a point of saying I could pick the place, and that if I said no, he wouldn't come near the school.I stared at that message for a long time. In the end, I agreed to meet him at the gallery.I wanted to say everything that needed saying, once and for all.Vincent got there early. He hadn't brought any bodyguards. All he had in front of him was a black folder."I had my lawyers draw up the papers to register our marriage properly." He slid the papers toward me. "If you're willing, all Five Families will witness it. Half of the DeLuca family's legitimate businesses, every property in my name, and the income from my seat on the Commission will all go into the prenup."If you don't want to go back to New York, we can stay in Los Angeles. You can keep studying. I won't interfere."I didn'

The next day, the dorm manager told me someone had delivered a whole carload of things downstairs. Two bodyguards in black suits stood at the door, with a private doctor, a nutritionist, and a driver lined up beside them. Parked nearby was a bulletproof sedan, its trunk packed with medicine, clothes, and food flown in from New York.Vincent was standing in front of the car.It had been a year, and he was much thinner than I remembered. But he was wearing the diamond cufflinks I'd designed at 18.When he saw me, his eyes slowly turned red."Victoria."I didn't come down the steps."What are you doing here?""Your shoulder hasn't fully healed, and the clinics near campus aren't great. I brought a doctor from New York." As if he was afraid I'd say no, he quickly added, "I found you a new place, too. It's only ten minutes from your studio. The driver will take you wherever you need to go, and security won't get in the way of your life."He was as thoughtful as ever.Whatever he decided was

Luca came to the school first. When I saw him in the gallery, I only paused for a second. He'd lost a lot of weight. He hadn't brought flowers or any gift that might give me the wrong idea. He just set an old document folder down in front of me.Inside were the complete records of how the Moretti family had used my education trust, a cashier's check for the principal plus interest, and a breakdown of everything their first legitimate shipping route had earned over the years."This money should have gone back to you a long time ago."I took it.Pain flickered in Luca's eyes. "You're not going to ask why it took me so long to come?""Your family owes me that money, so of course I'll take it. As for why you came, that has nothing to do with me."He was silent for a long time before he forced the words out."When you were 15, you lured away the men who were hunting me. Your car flipped, you broke two ribs, and I told you in the hospital that I owed you my life. Later, my family only made i
