Chapter 6

Author: Sol F
Vincent looked apologetic, but mostly he seemed to think this was only natural.

I raised my head. "And if I say no? Are you going to drug me and dump me on the Commission's doorstep?"

For a split second, Vincent looked caught.

Then he frowned.

"Victoria, don't say things like that just because you're upset. How could I ever do that to you? You're a DeLuca now. Isn't it only right that you help the family get through a crisis like this?

"It's just a public apology. You won't have to cover the losses."

I was so angry I almost laughed.

But my chest tightened, and every breath hurt.

Before I could say anything, there was a commotion outside the hall.

"Don, Mr. Moretti is here."

Luca walked in with the Moretti family's security team. His family ran most of the security business in New York, so on matters like this, their word carried weight. He set an incident report on the table.

He glanced at Sophia, who was still hiding behind Vincent.

"The explosion happened because someone ignored the oil leak warning and signed the order to restore power using the DeLuca family seal."

He leaned hard on the words "using the family seal."

Luca looked up at me.

"Victoria, I hear you were the one carrying the seal?"

Every eye in the room turned to me.

My shoulder was still bandaged, and my face was white from blood loss.

"But I never signed that order! All they gave me was a handoff sheet to stamp..."

Luca looked down. "You're the only one who had the seal."

I shot back, "If you'd checked the security footage, you'd know what I signed. I'd only just gotten to the port. I never even went near that ship!"

He didn't answer.

He just looked at me coldly, like a judge passing sentence.

My chest heaved. I was so frantic I could barely breathe.

I couldn't believe this was the same Luca I'd grown up with in Sicily.

The year I turned 15, there was a traitor in the Moretti family, and Luca got cornered at the old docks. I put on his jacket and lured the traitor's men up a different mountain road. They chased me so hard that my car went off the road into a ravine, and I broke two ribs. Luca made it safely back to the estate and rooted out the traitor. When I woke up in the hospital, he was sitting by my bed with red eyes, telling me he owed me his life.

During the Moretti family's final years in Sicily, they'd fallen on hard times. Behind my father's back, I put up my own education trust as collateral for them. That money would have been enough to put me through a master's degree in art in America. If their first shipping route had failed, my father would have killed me.

Luca had sworn he'd never let me down as long as he lived. Now he wouldn't even give me a chance to explain.

All the hard times we'd been through together might as well have never happened. He didn't remember any of it.

The Commission's clerk pulled out the port regulations.

"Whoever carries a family seal is considered the supervisor. Victoria DeLuca must go to the damaged section of the port in person and apologize publicly."

I looked at Luca. "And if it turns out it wasn't me?"

"Then the Commission will clear your name."

I couldn't help it. I laughed.

By then, everyone would already remember me as the woman who'd gotten them hurt and cost them their jobs.

I wanted to say more, but Vincent had already caught my wrist.

"Enough. Luca doesn't make mistakes. Stop making a scene!"

I opened my mouth, but before a sound came out, he jerked his chin at the bodyguards by the door.

"Take the Donna over there."

My ears rang. In that moment, I finally understood: once he stopped using his power to protect me, he could turn it on me without a second thought.

Two bodyguards took me by the arms, one on each side.

The wound on my shoulder ripped open, and the pain made my vision go dark.

By the time they brought me to Red Hook, the docks were packed with injured workers and their families. Tempers were already at a boil, and no one there was willing to wait for the law to punish me. Someone threw a bucket of ice water over me. It soaked through my clothes and into the unhealed wound on my right shoulder.

"That's her! She ignored the warning and turned the power back on! My brother's face is ruined from the burns. Can she pay for that?!"

"Murderer!"

"Greedy rich bastards!"

Rotten fruit and greasy rags came flying at me, one after another. I felt like I'd been stripped naked and thrown into the middle of the crowd, and not one person stepped in to protect me.

I kept my head down. I didn't dodge. I didn't have the strength to.

The ice water seeped into the wound, but I could barely feel the pain anymore.

Once the crowd had broken up, all Luca said was, "If you don't let them blow off steam, they'll cause even more trouble for us."

For the next three days, I had to apologize to every worker who'd been hurt or lost a job. Otherwise, the DeLuca family would lose its licenses to do legitimate business.

At the end of each day, I'd check the plane ticket to Los Angeles on my phone.

The public apologies would end just before Sophia and Luca's engagement party. By then, I'd have less than a day left before I could leave New York and leave Vincent.

  • They Sacrificed Me for Her   Chapter 21

Two years after leaving New York, Victoria finished her master's in sculpture at UCLA.Her thesis piece was acquired by a museum in Los Angeles. On the contract, she still signed her own name: Victoria Bellini. She didn't rush into another relationship, and she never tied herself to any family again. She had her own studio, her own work, and her own income. When things got hard, she still got scared, and sometimes she still wished someone would make the decision for her. But the hand that brought the chisel down was always her own. After Luca went back to New York, he never attended another marriage auction. The Moretti family publicly admitted that the old report had been false and returned the Bellini education trust with interest. Luca never went to Los Angeles again. He only ordered a copy of the catalog every year when the exhibition opened.Every time it arrived, he'd turn to Victoria's name and remember the year she was 15, lying in a hospital bed with two broken ribs, and how t

  • They Sacrificed Me for Her   Chapter 20

The day the annual exhibition closed, it poured in Los Angeles. It wasn't until I'd seen off the last visitors that I noticed Vincent at the entrance to the gallery. He hadn't brought any bodyguards, and he no longer wore the DeLuca family crest. He just had on a black coat soaked through with rain.He stood in front of the last piece of Second in Line for a long time. The woman in the sculpture had already pushed the door open. Behind her there was no family, no marriage, and no man waiting for her to look back.Vincent heard my footsteps and turned around."Did you get the papers from the Commission?""I did.""Does your shoulder still hurt?""Sometimes, when it rains."His lips moved, and his face twisted with pain, but he didn't call for a doctor the way he once would have, and he didn't reach out to touch me."I'm not the Don anymore," he said. "And I'll never use any of the family's power to track you down again."I nodded. "That's your choice.""I know it won't bring you back."

A week later, the Five Families Commission held a special session in New York. It wasn't until a lawyer sent the full minutes to Los Angeles that I learned Vincent was the one who had asked to stand trial. That day, he didn't take the DeLuca family's seat. Instead, he stood at the far end of the long table. He admitted in front of everyone that at the time of their wedding, he'd filed only a temporary declaration of marriage so he could clear the way for Sophia and Luca's engagement whenever he needed to. He admitted that Victoria hadn't lost the baby because she was weak. He had ordered the family's private doctor to sedate her and end the pregnancy. And he admitted that after the port accident, knowing full well she hadn't signed that order, he'd still sent her to be punished in public, then locked her in a safe house illegally under the pretense of protecting her.Every word went into the permanent record.Vincent's uncle was so furious he flipped his chair over right there."Do you

Vincent didn't leave Los Angeles right away. But he stopped sending people to follow me, and he didn't send anything else to my dorm.Three days later, he texted to ask if I'd give him half an hour. He made a point of saying I could pick the place, and that if I said no, he wouldn't come near the school.I stared at that message for a long time. In the end, I agreed to meet him at the gallery.I wanted to say everything that needed saying, once and for all.Vincent got there early. He hadn't brought any bodyguards. All he had in front of him was a black folder."I had my lawyers draw up the papers to register our marriage properly." He slid the papers toward me. "If you're willing, all Five Families will witness it. Half of the DeLuca family's legitimate businesses, every property in my name, and the income from my seat on the Commission will all go into the prenup."If you don't want to go back to New York, we can stay in Los Angeles. You can keep studying. I won't interfere."I didn'

The next day, the dorm manager told me someone had delivered a whole carload of things downstairs. Two bodyguards in black suits stood at the door, with a private doctor, a nutritionist, and a driver lined up beside them. Parked nearby was a bulletproof sedan, its trunk packed with medicine, clothes, and food flown in from New York.Vincent was standing in front of the car.It had been a year, and he was much thinner than I remembered. But he was wearing the diamond cufflinks I'd designed at 18.When he saw me, his eyes slowly turned red."Victoria."I didn't come down the steps."What are you doing here?""Your shoulder hasn't fully healed, and the clinics near campus aren't great. I brought a doctor from New York." As if he was afraid I'd say no, he quickly added, "I found you a new place, too. It's only ten minutes from your studio. The driver will take you wherever you need to go, and security won't get in the way of your life."He was as thoughtful as ever.Whatever he decided was

Luca came to the school first. When I saw him in the gallery, I only paused for a second. He'd lost a lot of weight. He hadn't brought flowers or any gift that might give me the wrong idea. He just set an old document folder down in front of me.Inside were the complete records of how the Moretti family had used my education trust, a cashier's check for the principal plus interest, and a breakdown of everything their first legitimate shipping route had earned over the years."This money should have gone back to you a long time ago."I took it.Pain flickered in Luca's eyes. "You're not going to ask why it took me so long to come?""Your family owes me that money, so of course I'll take it. As for why you came, that has nothing to do with me."He was silent for a long time before he forced the words out."When you were 15, you lured away the men who were hunting me. Your car flipped, you broke two ribs, and I told you in the hospital that I owed you my life. Later, my family only made i
