“Wait!”

The wet nurse had just stepped over the threshold when she froze in place. She looked back with a smile still on her face, but I caught the flicker of panic in her eyes.

At the doorway, Eleanor Quinn’s trusted housekeeper, Mrs. Zane, shot her a quick warning glance.

The wet nurse immediately plastered on a warm smile and took two hesitant steps back. “Ms. Shaw, the marquis and his wife are waiting in the main hall. They’re eager to meet the little heir. It’s a blessing for him.”

I gripped the edge of the bed. My nails were digging into the mattress.

A blessing?

It was a death sentence!

Until this moment, I had still been clinging to a shred of doubt.

Now, I believed the golden text almost completely. If the marquis and lady truly cared about my newborn, why would they have someone carry him outside moments after he was born?

Through clenched teeth, I repeated myself, “Bring me my baby.”

The smile on the wet nurse’s face stiffened. She glanced at Mrs. Zane again.

Mrs. Zane stepped forward. Her smile was polite but cold.

“Ms. Shaw, you’ve only just given birth. Your health comes first. The baby will only be shown to the marquis and lady before being brought right back. That’s the custom in every noble family.”

“I said, bring me my baby.”

Beside me, Ryan Wesley leaned over and took my sweat-soaked hand. “Evelyn, what’s wrong? Father and Mother only want to see their grandson. This is a happy occasion.”

I turned to look at him. He was still wearing the dark navy robe he had ridden home from the military camp in. Dust from the journey lingered between his brows.

The moment I met his eyes, tears welled up, threatening to spill over.

His smile slowly disappeared. “Why are you crying?”

I did not answer. I simply stared at him.

His grip on my hand tightened. “Bring her the baby.”

Mrs. Zane’s expression changed instantly. “The heir…”

“I said, bring her the baby.”

Her mouth snapped shut.

The wet nurse went pale. She dared not hesitate any longer. Hurrying back, she carefully placed the swaddled infant into my arms.

I lowered my gaze. His tiny face was wrinkled, his eyes were peacefully shut, and his lips were slightly parted. His breathing was so faint that it was barely more than a whisper. On his left wrist rested a small crimson birthmark, like a drop of blood.

My hands trembled.

Whether the golden warning was true or not, the stakes were too high to gamble with my son’s life.

“I’ll nurse him myself from today onward.”

Mrs. Zane blinked before forcing another smile. “Ms. Shaw, surely you jest. What noblewoman nurses her own child? If word gets out, people will think our household can’t even afford a wet nurse.”

“I’m feeding my own child. Why should outsiders have anything to say about it?”

“Ms. Shaw…"

“Or is it the marquis family’s rule that even a mother isn’t allowed to hold her own baby?”

Mrs. Zane was rendered speechless.

The wet nurse spoke up awkwardly. “I appreciate your kindness, Ms. Shaw, but Ms. Quinn…”

I lifted my eyes to meet hers.

She swallowed the rest of her sentence.

I turned toward Lily Abrams, who was standing beside my bed. She had come with me from the Shaw family as part of my dowry and had remained faithfully by my side ever since.

“Take my token and go to the Shaw residence. Invite my mother here. Tell her I’ve given birth and that her grandson is waiting to meet his grandmother.”

“Yes, Ms. Shaw.”

Lily turned around to leave.

Mrs. Zane immediately stepped in front of her.

“Ms. Shaw, you’ve only just delivered. Disturbing your mother at a time like this seems rather inappropriate…”

I cut her off, “Do I need the marquis family’s permission to invite my own mother to see her grandson?”

Mrs. Zane’s hand froze in midair. Lily slipped around her and hurried out.

Silence filled the room. The smile on Mrs. Zane’s face had all but vanished.

Then footsteps echoed from outside, and the door swung open.

Madam Quinn stood in the doorway with four older maids behind her.

Her gaze swept past everyone in the room before settling on the baby in my arms.

A smile spread across her face.

“Evelyn, it’s been rough for you.”

She walked toward me and held out her hands.

“Come now, let me hold my precious grandson.”

A sudden rumble of carriage wheels came from the end of the alley, mixed with the guards’ shouts and the harsh scrape of iron chains dragging across the stone road. The prison cart carrying Eleanor had left the city. When the cart passed by the gates of Earl Wesley’s Residence, Eleanor lifted her eyes. She saw me as well as the bundle in my arms. Her lips trembled violently. In the end, she did not say a word. The prison cart rolled over the stone bridge in the southern district. The rumbling grew fainter and fainter until it turned a corner and disappeared completely.I stood at the doorway, holding Aiden. The wind carried the sweet scent of pastries from the street. Aiden wrinkled his tiny nose and sneezed.I lowered my head and gently wiped the little droplets from his face before turning back into the courtyard. I never said a single word. I had nothing left to say to those people.Logan and Camille were also escorted away that day, sent to guard the northwestern frontier, an

The Chief Justice sealed the case file in open court and entered the palace overnight to report to the Emperor. By the time the news reached the Wesley estate, dawn had not yet broken. The entire estate was lit up, and every lantern burned through the darkness, yet no one dared to sleep. The clan elders who had once stood in the ancestral hall and echoed Eleanor's accusations did not dare leave after the hearing ended. They all crowded into the main hall, waiting. They were waiting for an ending they did not dare imagine. The next day at noon, the imperial decree arrived. The official delivering the decree stood before the main hall of the estate with two rows of Imperial Guards behind him. The golden scroll was slowly unfolded.More than a hundred members of the Wesley household knelt across the yard.Eleanor was forced to kneel at the very front, restrained by two bailiffs. Her hair was disheveled, and her lips were pale. The composure she once had when she stood beside my bed

“From beginning to end, you never once asked where my child had been taken.”I stepped forward, looking straight into Robert's eyes.“You never asked who placed the sleeping incense. You never asked whether the midwife had been replaced. You never asked whether that sickly infant was alive or dead. "You did only one thing—you rushed to send your daughter-in-law out of the city, locking her away at a country estate. Father, what were you so desperate to do? What were you so desperate to hide?”“You… You…” Robert pointed at me with a trembling finger. His face flushed a deep, ugly red. Before he could finish, the Chief Justice raised a hand and cut him off.The entire hall fell silent. The Chief Justice turned toward Ryan and me. His expression was solemn and commanding. His voice carried through the hall without needing to rise.“This case involves the entire Wesley household. It is not something this court can decide alone. Bailiffs.”The officers stepped forward in unison.

The moment the board in the bailiff’s hand stopped, Mrs. Zane came clean. It was as if a dam had broken, and everything she had been holding back came rushing out.One by one, she blurted out the names, places, times, seals, and documents. Every detail poured from her mouth. She knelt on the floor, tears and snot streaking down her face.“I was only following orders! Ms. Quinn told me what to do, and I did it! I’ve been wronged, Your Honor! I have elderly parents to support and children depending on me…”“Enough.”Eleanor stood in the center of the hall. The composure she had carefully maintained began to crack like dried plaster, flaking away piece by piece. She stepped forward and cut Mrs. Zane off with a shrill cry.“You wicked servant! How dare you slander me?! Have I ever treated you poorly? Have I ever denied you food, clothing, or anything you needed? And this is how you repay me? Colluding with outsiders to frame your own mistress? You’ll die a miserable death!”Mrs. Zan

Someone in the crowd gasped.“They’re identical! That’s her biological child! She stole another woman’s baby and still tried to frame her! What a shameless witch!”Camille’s hand trembled in my grip like a leaf caught in the wind. She looked up at the hand I held beneath the sunlight. She watched that ugly, deformed finger be exposed before hundreds of pairs of eyes. The color drained from her face inch by inch until all that remained was the gray of utter despair. The Chief Justice slammed his gavel down, and the roar of the crowd died away in an instant.Camille seemed to lose every ounce of strength in her body. She slipped from my grasp and collapsed onto the ground.I released her wrist. Her deformed hand fell limply into her lap. Then I turned to face the Chief Justice.“Your Honor, the truth about the switched babies is now beyond dispute. The sickly infant is Camille’s biological son. Aiden is mine. They hid my child in their place and placed their sick baby in my arms

The bailiff presented the swaddled infant before the Chief Justice. Everyone’s eyes fell on the tiny hand. Five delicate fingers curled instinctively, the wrist as thin as a carrot. The bailiff carefully pulled back the sleeve, revealing the baby’s left wrist. There was a crimson birthmark, like a drop of blood falling onto fresh snow. The crowd erupted.“He has the mark! He has the mark!”“That’s the heir’s son!”“They’re the ones who stole the baby!”Camille remained sitting on the ground. All the color drained from her face in an instant. Her mouth opened, but only a broken sound escaped her throat, as though someone had grabbed her by the neck. The Chief Justice lifted his gaze. When he looked at Logan and Camille again, his eyes were as cold as iron in the dead of winter.“This child bears a crimson birthmark on his left wrist, exactly as the heir’s wife described. I will ask you both one final time. What else do you have to say?’The muscles in Logan’s face twitched. His
