Chapter 1

Author: Sunny Steppe
I hid the killing intent that clung to me like a second skin.

I wore a cheap shirt and accompanied Noelle Sutton, who was three months pregnant, as she returned to the Sutton family to reunite with her biological parents.

Three years ago, I was injured in an attack near the border. Noelle found me and took me in, nursing me for three days and nights until I recovered.

Now that she had finally found her birth family, all I wanted to do was to quietly stand beside her, see her through this reunion, and make sure she was safe.

The Sutton estate had set up more than 20 tables for the occasion. The guests coming and going were all prominent figures in Hyton.

Afraid Noelle might be nervous, I took her hand and led her to a quiet spot in the corner.

Her palm was damp with sweat, and her fingers clutched tightly at my sleeve.

"Zane, if my parents say anything hurtful later, don't take it to heart."

I nodded and tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Don't worry. I'll stay here."

Two minutes later, a woman in an expensive designer gown approached us. She was Maeve Sutton, the girl that the Suttons had adopted and raised for over 20 years.

She was also the star of today's banquet.

Without even glancing at Noelle, she raised her hand and splashed half a glass of red wine in my face.

The cold liquid ran down my forehead, soaking my shirt collar and leaving my skin sticky and damp.

The surrounding guests immediately turned to look, laughing.

Maeve swirled her empty glass, her expression filled with mockery. "Where did this broke nobody come from? Noelle, do you really think you can walk into the Sutton family with a bastard in your belly?"

Noelle shot to her feet, her face turning pale with anger. "Maeve, don't push it!"

Maeve raised an eyebrow and reached out as if to shove Noelle.

I immediately placed a hand on Noelle's shoulder and shielded her behind me. Then, I picked up a napkin from the table and slowly wiped the wine from my face.

I looked at Maeve, saying in an even tone, "It's not too late to apologize now."

Maeve burst into laughter, doubling over.

"Apologize? To you? Who do you think you are?" she mocked. "You're just some broke ex-soldier. Don't get ahead of yourself."

She lifted her chin, deliberately raising her voice so everyone nearby could hear.

"Listen closely. You're not welcome at this banquet. Get out now if you know what's good for you. Otherwise, it'll be embarrassing when security throws you out later."

Tears welled up in Noelle's eyes. She gripped my hand so tightly it hurt.

I gently patted the back of her hand.

My gaze turned colder.

The commotion quickly drew the attention of Noelle's parents, Fred Sutton and Penny Miller.

Penny looked at the wine still dripping from my face, then glanced at the empty glass in Maeve's hand, but she didn't say a single word to Maeve.

Instead, she frowned at Noelle and snapped, "Did you come here just to cause trouble? Why did you bring someone like that into our home? Are you trying to embarrass us?"

Fred's expression darkened as well. He glanced at me in disgust as if I were something filthy.

"I told you before. If you want to be part of the Sutton family, you need to cut ties with this loser. Why are you so stubborn? You just had to bring him here and make a spectacle of yourself."

Derek went flying like a kite with its string snapped. He crashed hard onto the ground, coughing up blood. The elite team immediately rushed in, pinned him down, and cuffed him.I bent down to pick up the handgun, then walked to Maeve and pulled the cloth from her mouth. She gasped desperately, her eyes filled with terror and regret as she stared at me. "M-Marshal… I was wrong…"I looked at her coldly. "Where's the data?"She trembled as she pulled a USB drive from her pocket. "I-In here…"I took it and passed it to one of my men. "Check it."He took the drive and plugged it into a secure device. A moment later, he nodded. "The data is complete. Everything checks out."Only then did I turn back to Maeve."Do you know what happens to traitors?" I asked.Maeve began shaking uncontrollably. She dropped to her knees, begging desperately. "I was wrong! I'm sorry! Please, forgive me!"I said nothing and turned to look at Derek, who was still subdued."Take him back and interrogat

I nodded. "She has someone backing her."I rose to my feet and walked over to the window, gazing out at the city lights in the distance."And whoever it is knows the Sutton family and the Hall of Guardians very well. They were able to help Maeve disappear and even put her in touch with buyers in Valen."They're clearly no ordinary accomplice."Noelle paled slightly. "Then what should we do?"I turned to her and smiled. "Don't worry. I've sent people to investigate. Whoever that person is, I'll drag them out into the light."The moment I finished speaking, my phone rang again. This time, it was the Chief of Intelligence from the Hall of Guardians."Marshal, we found him. The person helping Maeve Sutton hide is the Sutton family's second steward, Derek Anderson."I frowned. "Anderson? He's worked for the Sutton family for 20 years.""That's right. But he has another identity.""What is it?""He's an operative from Valen who was planted inside the Sutton family. He's been unde

"Keep someone on her tail. Don't let her cause any trouble," I ordered."Yes, sir."After I ended the call, Noelle looked up at me, her eyes filled with concern. "What happened?"I smiled and stroked her hair gently. "Nothing. Just a minor issue.""Really?""Really. Don't worry. As long as I'm here, no one can hurt you."Only then did Noelle relax, resting her head against my shoulder again. When we got home, I carefully laid her down on the bed and tucked her in.She held onto my hand, whispering, "You'll always stay with me, right?"I squeezed her hand, answering solemnly, "Always. I swear."Smiling, she closed her eyes and soon fell asleep.I watched her sleeping face, warmth filling my heart. This woman had endured too much because of me.From now on, I wouldn't allow any suffering to touch her again. The next morning, I was awoken by the shrill ringing of my phone. When I answered, Robert's anxious voice came through. "Marshal Latham, bad news! Maeve is missing!"I

Noelle hesitated before saying softly, "Maybe we should just let it go…"I shook my head. "No. They need to learn their lesson."I looked at the portly man at the forefront of the crowd. "You. You were the one who called my wife a country bumpkin earlier, right?"The man shuddered and immediately stammered, "I shouldn't have run my mouth! I was wrong! Please forgive me!"I said calmly, "If you know you shouldn't run your mouth, then slap yourself a hundred times."The man froze for a moment. Then, without hesitation, he raised his hand and struck his own cheek. The sharp sound of each slap rang through the hall.He put all his strength into every blow until his lips began to bleed. The other guests watched in horror, not daring to make a sound. By the time he finished all 100 slaps, his entire face was swollen beyond recognition.Only then did I nod in satisfaction and turn to the next person."You. You said my wife wasn't worthy of entering the Sutton family."The woman imm

"The Sutton family owes you this much," Robert said solemnly. "And the only way the family can survive is if everything is placed in your hands."He turned to me, his eyes filled with pleading. "Marshal Latham, what do you think?"I was silent for a moment before nodding."Fine."Only then did Robert let out a sigh of relief. He immediately instructed the lawyer to prepare the paperwork. The surrounding guests exchanged glances. They all had the same thought—the Sutton family now had a new head.…Robert was nothing if not efficient. Less than half an hour later, the lawyer returned with a thick stack of documents.Robert personally laid them out in front of Noelle, keeping his tone respectful. "Noelle, these are all of the assets under the Sutton name, including company shares, real estate, and investment funds. The total value is approximately 13.7 billion dollars."Sign here, and all of it will be yours."Noelle stared at the documents before her, still at a loss.Just a

Penny followed suit, pressing her forehead to the ground. "Marshal Latham, we were blind and foolish. Please be the bigger man and let us go!"Maeve was so terrified that she lost control of her bladder. She collapsed on the floor, sobbing hysterically. The surrounding guests drew sharp breaths as they watched the scene unfold.Just moments ago, they had been laughing along at Noelle. Now, they realized just how foolish they had been.Robert turned to me and asked respectfully, "Marshal Latham, how would you like to handle them?"I looked at the three people on the ground, my gaze cold as ice. "Just now, you told my wife to get rid of our child, didn't you?"Fred shuddered violently and immediately shook his head. "N-No! That was just nonsense! Please don't take it seriously!"Penny joined in, crying, "Marshal Latham, we spoke without thinking! We're sorry! Please have some mercy!"I ignored their pleas and turned to Noelle."Noelle, what do you say?"Noelle bit her lip, her
