By the time Amelia reached her next training block, she had decided there were worse things than being late.

Being expected was one of them.

That was the feeling waiting for her when she entered the lower practice hall: expectation. Not from the students, though several looked up when she stepped inside. Not from the stone walls, though they were lined with symbols that seemed to dim and brighten as her eyes moved over them.

From the room itself.

It felt aware.

By the time Amelia reached her next training block, she had decided there were worse things than being late.Being expected was one of them. That was the feeling waiting for her when she entered the lower practice hall: expectation. Not from the students, though several looked up when she stepped inside. Not from the stone walls, though they were lined with symbols that seemed to dim and brighten as her eyes moved over them. From the room itself. It felt aware. The lower practice hall was carved beneath Waycross, deep enough that Amelia could feel the weight of the Academy above her. The ceiling arched high overhead, supported by black columns veined with silver. Circles were etched into the floor at carefully spaced intervals, each marked with a different symbol. Some glowed faintly. Some were dull and dark. One near the far wall looked scorched. No one stood in that one.Amelia made a note of it.The students were already gathered in loose lines. Most wore their uniforms with minor

The word stayed on the wall longer than Amelia wanted it to.Soon.It had been written beneath the crossing-paths symbol in fresh black ink, each letter narrow and deliberate. Not scratched. Not burned. Written. As if someone had stood in the residence hall after the tea room vanished and calmly left her a message.Amelia stared at it until the ink began to gleam. Then it moved. Not much.Just enough for the final letter to stretch downward, thinning into a dark line that looked disturbingly like a drip. She stepped back. The wall went blank.Of course it did.By morning, Amelia had almost convinced herself she had imagined it.Almost.The problem with Waycross was that imagination had started to feel like the least reliable explanation. Her placement slate waited on the desk beside her untouched breakfast, which had appeared sometime before dawn on a small tray by the door. She had not eaten the pale red fruit or the glossy black roll. She had taken two cautious bites of the eggs onl

By the end of the day, Amelia had learned three important things.First, Waycross Academy considered explanations optional.Second, mirrors could knock.Third, there were apparently several different ways for a stranger’s touch to stay beneath her skin.Kai’s had lingered like a secret at her pulse.Draven was like banked fire.Rowan’s like a bright thread looped around her wrist, quick and impossible to ignore.Amelia hated that she could tell the difference. She hated that more than part of her kept noticing. After her final session, she made it halfway back to the residence wing before the hallway changed its mind.Again.One moment, she was following a group of students through a vaulted corridor that smelled of rain and candle smoke. The next, the students were gone, the walls had narrowed, and the air tasted faintly of honeyed steam.Amelia stopped.“No,” she said aloud. The corridor did not apologize. It continued ahead in a long, dim line, lit by lanterns made of colored glass

Amelia was 12 minutes late to Foundations of Species Law.The placement slate told her so three times.First in the corridor, with the dry accusation of ink changing beneath her thumb. Then again, at the entrance to the session chamber, the words YOU ARE LATE appeared across the slate in bold black letters. And finally, as she slipped into the only open seat near the back, the page warmed against her palm and added:Noted.Amelia stared at the word.Wonderful.Even the paper was disappointed in her.The chamber was not a classroom. At least, not in any familiar way. It looked more like a small courtroom that had been softened just enough to pretend it was academic. Curved rows of dark benches surrounded a central floor marked with circles, lines, and symbols set into the stone. No podium stood at the front. No chalkboard. No neat rows of desks.Instead, a woman in a dark green coat walked slowly around the center circle while speaking to the room. She did not pause when Amelia entered

Amelia dreamed of doors. Not normal doors. Not the chipped white one from her bedroom at home, or the dark wooden one of Room 317, or even the iron-banded entrance to Waycross Academy. These doors stood in a hallway that had no ceiling and no end. Some were tall enough for giants to walk through. Some were so small that she would have had to crawl through them on her hands and knees. Some were carved with symbols that hurt to look at. Others had no handles at all. One door breathed slowly in its frame, expanding and contracting like something asleep.Amelia walked past all of them. She did not know what she was searching for.Only that something behind one of those doors knew her name. When she woke, her hand was stretched toward the wardrobe. Her journal sat on the top shelf where the room had moved it the night before.Amelia lay still for a moment, staring at it.Then she pulled her hand back under the blanket and closed her eyes.“Nope,” she whispered. “Absolutely not.”The room,

By the time Amelia left the dining hall, the shape of the room had changed around her.Not the walls. Not the tables. Not anything obvious enough to point at and say, there, that moved. But the students had shifted. Before Kai sat across from her, they had watched Amelia the way people watched something unusual and possibly breakable. Curious. Suspicious. Unimpressed. Their attention had been sharp but distant, the way someone might study a strange insect caught beneath a glass. After Kai vanished, the distance disappeared.Whispers followed her between the tables. Some were too low to catch. Some were not.“Kai touched her.”“No, he didn’t.”“I saw it.”“That’s impossible.”“Maybe she’s not—”“Don’t be stupid. She smells human.”Amelia kept walking. Her wrist still felt warm. That was the part she hated most. Not the whispers. Not the stares. Not even the way a few students moved out of her path with expressions caught somewhere between resentment and caution. The warmth.Kai’s thumb
