Chapter 3

Author: rika
“Then let’s do as the young Valenti says. Put your guns down,” Soren ordered with a faint, unreadable smile.

His men hesitated for a moment before lowering their weapons one after another, and the two men restraining Luca released him as well.

With a shard of glass pressed against his throat, Soren neither struggled nor begged for mercy.

Instead, the corner of his mouth lifted with an almost amused expression. “I thought this was going to be a dull cleanup, but I didn’t expect to see such an entertaining last stand.”

“Ezio, don’t do anything rash! Let him go!” my father shouted, his face drained of color.

Ezio’s fingers were clenched so tightly that the jagged glass had already cut deep into his palm, and blood streamed down his wrist.

“You’ve protected me all these years,” he said with grim determination. “This time, let me protect all of you.”

“Ezio, calm down and come back!” Gabriel shouted, his voice raw.

“There’s no time,” Ezio rasped. Then he roared, “Take our sisters and go! Hurry!”

“How touching,” Soren said with a low laugh, though there was not a trace of warmth in his eyes.

My father gritted his teeth and shoved Luca forward. “Luca, get them out of here!”

Now free, Luca grabbed Vera and me and staggered backward, dragging us with him.

A gunshot suddenly cracked through the room as a bullet tore through the floor-to-ceiling window and struck the floor beside Luca’s feet.

Vera screamed.

“Trying to leave?” Soren asked with a cold smile as he tapped his earpiece twice.

Red laser dots appeared one after another, settling directly on every forehead. “Did I say you were allowed to move?”

“Do you understand now?” Soren’s voice remained calm, but every word carried the arrogance of a man convinced he had already won.

“My men are everywhere outside, and none of you are getting out of here.”

My father’s voice trembled as he nearly begged, “Soren, I’ll give you all the territory and assets you want!”

“Just let my children go, and you can take my life if that’s what you want!”

Soren shook his head and answered viciously, “Old man, I didn’t agree when you begged me earlier, and you don’t get to name your price now.”

“Your son injured me, so how are we going to settle that debt? Maybe I should choose one of you and send them to the grave first.”

The shard of glass slipped from Ezio’s trembling fingers and hit the floor.

Soren slowly wiped away the thin line of blood on his neck, rolled his wrist, and looked at them with open contempt. “For all the Valenti family’s bluster, none of you have any real backbone.”

I remained standing in the shadows without moving an inch as I silently continued the countdown in my head.

Ten... nine... eight... seven...

A month later, Soren had been completely cast out of the Greco family, and within days, several of his old enemies found him and broke both of his legs. Before long, he lost his mind entirely and spent his days begging in dark, damp street corners while muttering the same sentence over and over again.“C, I’m going to kill you...”As for the Greco family, Vincent knew exactly how to handle the aftermath. He not only returned every piece of territory and every shipping route they had taken, but also handed over thirty percent of the revenue from their docks as compensation. In the end, I agreed to renew our arrangement for another three years, although this time, I alone decided the rules and the price. The gifts sent by the other seven families as apologies piled up outside the gates of the estate.I refused to meet any of them, so they could only leave their gifts behind and depart nervously. My mother returned from Florence overnight and held me in her arms as she cried over everythi

There was a new restraint in the way they looked at me, as if they were suddenly unsure how to act around me.Vera’s eyes were still red, and she gripped the hem of her coat tightly with both hands before taking a small, uneasy step backward. She probably thought that I had become far stronger than she had ever imagined and no longer needed an older sister standing in front of me to protect me.Seeing how tense everyone was, I simply stretched my arms in front of them and let out a lazy yawn. Then I took Vera by the hand and pulled her down onto the sofa with me.Leaning against her side, I murmured weakly, “Vera, talking is exhausting, and dealing with all this trouble is even worse.”“Now that I’m home, can’t I just leave C behind?”I tilted my head toward them, blinked, and softened my voice in a deliberately pleading tone. “Dad, Gabriel, Luca, Aldo, Ezio, and Vera... you’re not going to throw me out just because I happened to be good at fighting when I was away, are you?”The tensi

“This is impossible... How could this happen? I don’t believe it!”Soren pulled out his phone with trembling hands and frantically began calling the uncles and allies who had always treated him like one of their own.“Uncle, it’s me, Soren! You have to help me and send your men over here.”Before he could even finish, an angry voice exploded through the phone. “Soren, you brainless idiot! If you want to get yourself killed, don’t drag the rest of us down with you!”The call was immediately disconnected.Soren quickly dialed another number. “Riccardo, we agreed that we were going to bring down the Valenti family together! We’ve spent so long setting this up, so we can’t just give up now!”The answer he received was just as cold. “Soren, for the sake of what we once had, I’ll give you one piece of advice: you’re on your own now.”He kept dialing numbers like a madman, calling a third person and then a fourth, but each call either went unanswered or ended with someone cursing him out.In

On the other end of the video call, Vincent’s face had turned livid with rage as he shouted, “Get the jet ready right now! I’m going over there myself, and I’ll skin that idiot alive with my own hands!”If there had not been a screen between them, Soren would probably have already taken a slap across the face.I casually rubbed my ear and said, “Vincent, your son really is noisy.”Still being held down on the floor, Soren stared fixedly at the computer screen on the table. The screen displayed the page for transferring the Valenti family’s assets, with every preliminary step already completed and only the final confirmation left. The moment he pressed that button, all of the Valenti family’s funds would be transferred into the Eight Families’ joint account. It was his last chance to turn the situation around.I saw exactly what he was thinking and said, “Let him go and let him press it.”The men released him, and Soren scrambled toward the computer.I walked over and stopped beside him

The moment Vincent gave the order, every man Soren had brought with him threw his weapon to the floor. One after another, they dropped to their knees.Soren was forced down by the men restraining him, and both knees struck the floor hard.He seemed so shaken by what his father had just said that, for a moment, he even forgot to struggle.Gabriel helped my father back to his feet, but disbelief was still written all over his face, and he could barely get the words out when he looked at me.“You... you really are C? The C whose codename alone is enough to scare people?”“How could you...”That was it. There was no hiding it anymore.Feeling slightly guilty, I forced an awkward smile and said, “Ahem, it’s really not as impressive as it sounds.”“I just happen to like tinkering with guns and know a few people, so you really don’t have to react like this.”“Where did you learn to do all that? That was incredible,” Luca asked as he moved closer, unable to contain his curiosity.“Maybe... I w

Soren still refused to believe it, and with his face flushed red, he shouted at the top of his lungs, “It’s fake! That voice has to be synthesized! You think you can scare me with a fake recording of my father?”I ignored him and spoke into the phone. “Vincent, I called because I wanted to let you know in advance that I’m not dead, but I don’t intend to renew our agreement.”The man on the other end immediately panicked. “No, you can’t do that, C! Did we do something wrong? Just tell me what you want, and I’ll give you anything!”“I’m at the Valenti estate right now,” I said. “Massimo Valenti is my father.”The other end of the line suddenly went silent.“As for why I don’t want to renew it,” I continued with a cold laugh, “call your son on video and see for yourself what he’s doing.”It took Vincent a long moment before he finally stammered, “I-I didn’t know. I swear I had no idea the Valentis were your family! If I had known, how could I possibly have let this happen?”“I was a fool,
